Islie: The statement disclosed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, gave the assurance that the collection from stamp duty would be second to oil revenue, as it had the potential to yield up to a trillion Naira if properly harnessed. ...And the money was used for??! All we hear is how several sectors and parastatals generated billions, which is great... Yet, we continue to borrow more billions. Where exactly do all the monies go??! A little transparency can't be too much to ask!!! 1 Like |

Digitalstarlite:Developed countries mostly generate revenue through taxation, not sale of minerals. I believe once Nigerians start actually paying taxes, they will hold government more accountable. What we have now is free oil money attitude. Most successful countries are driven by their private sectors, even China. The government is just to manage and create enabling environment. 2 Likes |

The most important question now is ‘What happens next’? Other questions are: What specific projects will this be channeled into? How will the results on the economy be tracked? What group of the population will be positively impacted? Despite the huge success on the collection within a short period, the incidence or burden on the payers should be assessed. Are the payers benefiting or are they in pains? Will our roads get better; Shall we have potable water? Will electricity supply improve? What’s the impact on Schools? Hospitals, Security, etc, etc? Another ethical question is whether it’s even okay to tax a transaction of N5,001? How much profit was made on that amount? Yes, N50 is small yet it’s big for some low earners. It’s not enough to celebrate huge collections, because the funds are just means to an end. We must therefore be more interested in what happens next.
