One of the best skills you can learn is how to do hair. You will make a lot of money with this. The black barbers here are very terrible. There is also high demand for braids, dreadlocks and anything with female hair. My friends are always begging, looking for people to do their hair and they’re willing to pay anything. Especially the black Americans, they care so much about hair and hair products.

If you can make dreadlocks and twists, you go make money tire. Even me sef dey find someone to do my dreadlocks since 2 months now. The last guy that did my dreads charged me €120 on a friendly level. He charges the white people up to €300 and they pay without complaints.

Another skill is construction work. Anything that has to do with house construction, you will always have work. It is also not as hard as in Nigeria. There are better equipment and machines here to make the work easier. You’d just have to learn how to use them, but that is not a problem. Even if your German is bad, you will still have work in this sector.

Blogging and Vlogging is another great way. If you have something interesting to talk about, people will follow you like MTN (everywhere you go). Just don’t write things that would cause controversy, otherwise you will gather the wrong attention.

Music and Arts. If you’re a musician and you are talented, you can make some money. Just don’t expect to be famous. If you play musical instruments, you get lots of attention. Keyword is: be talented.

Modeling is one of the best ways to make money here. Photographers are always looking for models (male and female) for their projects. They can also get you jobs with big companies. You would also land an advertisement job with companies like H&M, Zara, Primark or Zalando (the company I work for). Just have the looks and body and be open to nude photos.

Videography, Photography and Graphic design are also great skills to have. There are a lot of graphic designers here, so you won’t be anything special. But videographers, especially editors and color graders, are in very high demand. Color graders are mostly wanted and well paid.
Photographers too can do well but there are a lot of photographers here, so you’d have to be outstanding.

If your own is Football, pls don’t waste your time. Just face your studies and graduate. Lots of dreamers here hoping to get into local and international leagues. Especially these Owerri and Anambra boys. That one is a Disney land dream.

If you are an Athlete (except football), and you’re very good, Germans will claim you easily. I know a Nigerian girl that was a good runner. She was granted German citizenship because of it. No questions asked. She also made a lot of money but she squandered it on drugs and lost her endorsements. Now she’s telling old stories.
wow i didn't know whites could have dreads.

Please what if you're into some online business and the proceeds from it are normally paid directly into your Nigeria bank account. In that way, there shouldn't be need for tax, right?, or I my wrong?

The honest answer to this question is a sketchy one. You are a Nigerian, you understand what I mean.

But the textbook answer is: You are legally obligated to disclose your means of income, especially if you make enough money to pay taxes. Tax fraud is a big crime here and they won’t be easy on you. Online business is also a means of income and you’re obligated to Germany as long as you’re a resident.

I don’t know about web development. Maybe an IT person can answer that.

In Germany you can go to work with whatever hair is on your head. As long as you don’t scare people away. You can also dress as you like, just don’t be naked. Guys even wear slippers to work in my office and nobody gives a damn.
Some companies only allow corporate dress-code and places like hospitals, banks, law office, etc have dress codes.

In general nobody cares about what you wear to work or what your hair looks like. You can even have tattoos on your teeth. They only care about what is in your brain. As long as you can do your job and do it well, nothing else matters.

Hello Mr. Daniel.

I saw your post concerning blogging and Videography. Doesn't that contradict earlier statements of yours that students in Germany can't freelance? I mean, I saw it also boldly written on Daad. Or is there some other route to go around this freelancing stuff?

Maybe, I am getting this wrong as perhaps freelancing isn't the same as getting video correction and making jobs.

Kindly break this down for some of us here please as I feel like we are a bit confused.

Thank for you returning. God bless you.

Happy New Month.

Danielhouston can you share your view on what's life like in Cologne? I'm not sure if you've done so but if you have, there's no problem.

Life in Cologne is a fraction of what Berlin is. Cologne is also a big city surrounded by smaller cities and great for traveling around West Germany and other cities like Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels. It is also a tourist destination, especially around the cathedral.

There is always something going on in Cologne every weekend, either an exhibition or a protest. You can visit Cologne on a weekend and hope to have a good time, only to hear that there’s a protest going on and the police are everywhere. I hate that. They are always complaining about something. If it’s not vegans, it is fur, or right wing politics.

They say they are friendly people but I don’t accept that. They are very pretentious and fake. They are also more racist than Berliners. They just hide behind that image of the West being more open minded. However, it is safe. You can also get by with English language, as there are a lot of tourists there. I don’t consider the Germans there to be good looking. It’s like all the washed up Berliners moved to Cologne to retire.

You will also see a lot of black male escorts there because of the vibrant gay scene. So when you see that African guy that says he’s just visiting for a weekend and he can’t explain his job, you know what he came for.
Rent is quite expensive and so is the lifestyle. You can easily find a job there and be able to go to nearby cities like Dusseldorf for work. It is not really a student city. The young people you’ll find there are mostly tourists and they stay in hostels, specifically A&O hostel.

In general, I would recommend Cologne. It is a great place to live and work. It is beautiful. Lots of companies and good salary. You can also get a job at the Airport. And if you’re gay, you will have the time of your life in Cologne. If you’re homophobic, fix your homophobia or stay away. That is a renowned gay city.

Like I said before, in Germany it is not what you do. It is what you call it. By law, a student cannot be self employed or be a freelancer. But if you have an occupation that makes you money, it is classified as a job and you pay tax accordingly. If you call it freelancing, you would require a special visa for freelancers. So your videography or whatever else, is a job.
There is a visa class for self employed people and freelancers and their tax is called that.

14. Avoid fines. Buy a ticket for the train and do the right thing. You can risk it if you want but if they catch you, you’ll pay €60 fine when you could have just bought a ticket of €2,80 and saved yourself the trouble.

15. Lastly, spend your money and enjoy yourself. Don’t just save and save without enjoying your hard work. When you die, people who don’t know how you suffered for the money, will be the ones to spend it. Yes, students die too.

Other Nigerian students in Germany pls feel free to add to the post.

Point #14. I was on a video call with a friend and he was about to board the train without a ticket. I told him and he just waved it off. Na so dem catch and baba just pay €60

The protests brought a lot of things into light, making the German government to bring up discussions about tackling racism and systemic racism. Berlin just passed an anti-discrimination law that prevents public officials, police, schools from discriminating against anyone based on skin color, religion, sexual orientation, age, background, illness, etc. It gives people the right to sue public officials if they’ve been discriminated against, and be awarded compensation.

The new law also says that you cannot discriminate against anyone because they don’t speak German. Public officials like the Foreigners office, Rathaus, Job center, have always done that. But now, you can sue them if they refuse you service or deny you opportunity because you don’t speak German. Unless it is something that lawfully requires German language.
You can also sue the police if you’ve been racially profiled or discriminated against.

This is a huge breakthrough for us. Especially those of us that have faced discrimination in housing and from government workers. [/quote]

Thank you Zeinymira. Well, there are gay people everywhere and they have rights in Western countries, as they should. There’s nothing we can do about that. Kids are still being born and raised and there are more straight people than gay people. Doesn’t matter where a child is raised, if they’re gay, they will be gay. They may just hide it in certain countries but hiding it doesn’t change the fact.

Secondly, pls if you have a chance to give your kids a better life abroad, don’t hesitate out of fear of them getting “spoiled”. My dad had a chance to send us to the UK years ago. He had the money and means but he refused. We had gotten international passports and were about to apply for visa, but he cancelled everything. His reason? He did not want us to go there and “spoil”.

He put his personal beliefs before our future and we never forgave him for it. My siblings and I, struggled and suffered, graduated with no jobs, saw poverty, until I was able to escape to Germany. If he had sent us abroad then, we would be British citizens by now and take good care of him. Now he’s in Nigeria counting ceiling and bragging to everyone that his son is abroad.

So please, there’s nothing wrong with raising your kids in a society that guarantees them a bright future, than to be worried about gays and nudity.
