13. Don’t cheat the system. Don’t make money on the side and be paying into your German bank account. If money is coming into your account and there’s no record of tax, you can be in trouble. Also don’t do illegal things like selling drugs. It can get you deported.

In a case a student after the 20 hour/week, maybe he did some side job and get paid cash for it, does it means is not advisable to go save it in bank account (since darris no tax on it).

Berlin in pictures. This is Alexanderplatz, the center and the most famous place in Berlin. It is where you will see every hood rat and their mama. It is also where all the “Johnny just come” usually take their first pictures, to show their friends they have arrived. I’ll give more information about this place after the pictures.

PS: The pictures were taken with Android, so the camera is a bit different this time.

Alexanderplatz has a reputation for being the “jobless people” chill center. People call it that because a lot of Syrian refugees usually hang out there every day and it is assumed that they don’t have jobs. It is also where you’ll find the African guys who just landed in Berlin, shopping and taking pictures.

This is also a common meeting point for a lot of friends because it is easy to explain and it is centralized with transportation. If you want to catch up with friends, you can all just agree to meet there and go somewhere else. You normally won’t find a nice bar or restaurant to hang out there, as it is too touristic and everyone is on the move.

It is a blessed haven for street performers, especially musicians. A lot of musicians have made names for themselves, from performing at this place, on the street. Just do your thing and put a box in front of you for people to give you money. Yes, artists can make money there. Even if your music sounds like sh*t, you will always have a crowd of people watching you, because they have nothing else to do.

There have been crimes there in the past, for that reason, a small police station was built right in the middle. The police don’t disturb anybody and they don’t even look at you. They’re only there to prevent crimes. Occasionally, they can stop the street performers when they get too noisy or pull too much crowd.

Alexanderplatz is also where you’ll find Primark. Primark is a cheap shopping store and they sell almost everything. You can buy jeans for €12 and other nice clothes. You can buy a nice shoe for as low as €7 in Primark and it will look really good. Only thing is, you might see 100 other people wearing the same thing.
So if your brother or sister returns from Germany and they bought lots of clothes, just check the label. If it says “made in Indonesia” or “made in India”, they bought it from Primark.

You can walk from Alexanderplatz to other places like Brandenburger Tor, Friedrichstr, Hackescher Markt, etc. It is very big and beautiful. You can just hang out there all day and never get bored.
There is almost everything you need there, including gym, electronic store, shoe store, sports stores, malls, and a bus to Hamburg for just €10.

There is tax for every job you do, if you get paid above €500. You can save it in your bank if you want, but if you keep saving money there and there’s no proof of job or tax, they will ask you questions at some point.

But if it's not up to that (say just some menial weekend job) one is free to do anything with the money earned right?

Berlin is a hotspot for Vegans, Feminists, and radical gender non-conforming people. I use the word “radical” because they do everything against the norms of society and are fearless about it. You would just have to deal with it. I will start with the Vegans.

Being Vegan is a huge thing here and a lot of people are vegans. It is like a cult. The vegans don’t play either and I find many of them annoying. They push their beliefs to everyone else and criticize people for eating meat and wearing fur. They will literally jump on you when you’re shoving that burger down your throat and tell you how you’re a murderer for eating animals.

They have Vegan restaurants, vegan food at supermarkets, vegan pizza, even the belt they wear on their waist and their boots, they have to make sure the leather was not made from animals. Even on dating apps, some people only want to meet other vegans.
You might see that pretty girl you like and she likes you, but she won’t date you because you’re not vegan.

They even go as far as only renting their flat or room to other Vegans. They don’t want to share their pot or kitchen with anyone who cooks animal products, including milk and egg. If you dare challenge them, they’re ready to go toe-to-toe with you all night and tell you about your miserable life. That is how important it is to them.

When I worked at a restaurant, they gave me so much headache. Asking if everything is vegan. They won’t even let you make burger on the same grill you used for beef or chicken. They also hold protests from time to time to cry about animals and how they’re being treated.
There are a few relaxed vegans who don’t care and they mind their business.

The feminists are another group of people you will find in Berlin. Men and women are feminists and they take it very seriously. You have to be careful what you say and how you say it. Any word that comes out of your mouth can be considered offensive to womanhood and the feminists will not waste any time to put you in the right place.

One day I was sitting in the train from work and a girl was standing. She had a big stomach and I even thought she was pregnant. The train was so full and all the seats were occupied. A guy tried to be a gentleman and gave up his seat for this lady to sit down. All hell broke loose and the train turned into a war zone.

The lady disgraced him and dragged his ancestors from the grave, for giving up his seat for her. She said he assumed she was weak because she’s a woman and she does not need any man to tell her what to do. She has legs and she can stand like everyone else.

So yeah, don’t give up your seat for a woman here and don’t even open the door for her to say “Ladies first”. She’d tell you she can open her own door and even curse you out. Also don’t give hugs unless they reach out to hug you. Don’t you dare say anything about their fashion either.

Some feminists also don’t shave their armpits and pubic hairs. They don’t feel they have to do anything to please a man. It is their body and they can do what they want. So you better be careful when dealing with women here, even at work.
No cat-calling, don’t compliment them, don’t talk about their looks or do any gesture out of being a “gentleman”. Telling your female colleague that she’s beautiful, can be considered sexual harassment.

They can wail all they want, as long as they don't take aggressive measures to portray their beliefs. I'd eat that meat right in front if them.

The gender non-conforming. These ones are not gay and they are not straight. At least, that’s what they say. They are also not men or women. They just identify as humans.

They wear what they want, sleep with anybody they want, do what they want with their body and don’t have any restrictions. You can see a man wearing a skirt and boots, or a woman wearing men’s clothes and high heels. The freedom to do what they want and break societal norms, is what makes them non-conforming.

You will find a lot of them in Berlin. They come in all races; White, Black, Asian, hispanic, Arab. You will also see men who paint their nails with nail polish and they are not gay. They paint the same color with their girlfriend and you almost cannot tell who is the man or woman.
If you ask them about their sex life, they can have sex with anybody and anything, even flowers. They are just here to live and let live.

I tell you, it was so strange to me at first. In Nigeria where we’d normally offer women seats and take them out, or open the car door for them, here it is different. I’ve had my own share of attacks.
Last month, one of my colleagues told a girl he saw on the street, that she was really beautiful. The girl insulted him eh...He came to the office to tell the story, hoping to get support. There was nothing they did not call him that day. Both men and women jumped on his neck in the name of feminism. I just minded my business.

The guy is Arab. They said he was creepy and no girl wants to be complimented by a man. They blamed him for all the girls that have been raped and how men take advantage of women. There were two sides to this argument. Some people supported him and some were against him. Of course, most white guys are always against feminists.

A friend in Ireland once told me that, it's kinda risky to walk up to a random girl to start a flirty conversation, that she could call the cops on you.

How then can you meet new girls, when you can't compliment them randomly?

Now I understand why a good number of naija guys outside naija are kinda lonely.

There is no rule to this. You can compliment and flirt but also expect to get cursed out. It depends on the girl. Some girls like it and some don’t. All the Latina and Asian girls I know, usually don’t mind when guys flirt with them. They even complain that guys are so shy to talk to them. It is mostly the white girls and black girls who are likely to read you your rights.

You can meet girls on a dating app, in the club or even at work. Yes, some colleagues f*ck each other at home. It all depends on the person. Just keep trying your luck. The police won’t do anything to you for flirting with a girl or complimenting her. As long as you don’t touch her against her will.
I will talk about relationships next.
