What a night!!! cry

Been up by 1:37am to the noise coming from my chicken coop. On assessing the cause, it turned out to be a pouch rats attack. Tried killing it, but it got away. Lost few birds to it. (All matured birds, legs all broken cry )

I never knew pouch rats could kill full grown roosters oooo.
Sorry for your loss. You might need to get cats again.

Great News

My DIY incubator I made proved to be worth it after all. Six (6) fertilized eggs were used for the experiment. Today marks the 23rd day of the incubation. 4 eggs out the six eggs hatched so far. I will wait just one more day to see if the two remaining eggs will hatch.

I will be starting another thread on the incubation process for my kuroiler birds. This time around, I will be using 30 fertilized eggs.

Would love to know more about how you control the incubator. It seems you had very good hatch rate. How did you control the temperature and humidity?

Good News

Finally, something to put a smile on my face after the late night saga. I got some palliatives delivered to me. This will go a long way in feeding my locals, Noilers/Kuroilers.

Item gotten
1 bag (50kg) Maize
1 bag (50kg) Guinea corn.

Still can't bring myself to terms I lost my beloved cats. I was told it even kills little kitten on rare occasions.
For now, I am deploying traps around the coop.

In setting up the incubator using the smaller box, I made use of a 40watts bulb as my source of heat. All I did was make sure I got the temp right to range 37°C (with little variations though, fairly within range) with the help of a thermometer. After two days monitoring and seeing that is was constant, I introduced the fertilized eggs.

On humidity, I just made sure there was water in the little plastic placed inside at all times.

Note:
I'm still trying to get the temperature right in the bigger carton I built to hatch the 30 eggs. i.e the 60 watts bulb. Also, going to incorporate a thermostat if i do get one soon.

Boss, Pls kindly explain how to use Garlic, Onions, Ginger nd pawpaw leaves as organic alternatives in poultry biz and their functions.
Thanks

On the use of ginger/garlic (I do not use onions at all), bitter leaf, scent leaves etc. I have carefully observed and monitored how the birds responds both in terms of treatments and as a preventive measure. It is still a work in progress as more and more organic combinations are still being exploited.

The ginger/garlic works well against a range of poultry diseases i.e coryza, worms, e-coli related, salmonella etc. In some cases, you will have to introduce one or two other ingredients to make it more effective.

The pawpaw leaves (& bitter leaf) extract works just fine for me in treating coccidiosis. Also, adding other ingredients has proved to be more effective in treating severe cases. Bitter leaf plus scent leaves extract.

Administration of the extract in most cases is done through drinkers, mixed in their water with exception of severely sick birds that are given orally, forced down their throats with the use of the syringe.

I am still working out a chart that works just fine for me

Note
I wouldn't advise a total switch all at once to organic without proper knowledge of poultry diseases and its signs. Another thing I must point out is, treatment takes time.

Since my tomato nursery is going to take a while before any serious activity, let me do a quick raising of Noiler Chicken for a month before disposing them off cool.

Initially thought of 600 birds, but later scaled down to 350 due to market factor.

Preparation before arrival
1. Cleaning, scrubbing & washing of makeshift brooding room with detergent & Izal. Walls inclusive.

2. After drying out, I applied baking soda in little quantity, spread all over the floor. Wood shavings was then poured on the floor as a covering.

3. Cartons were used to cover the wood shavings. This would be in place for the next 3 days.

4. Their drinkers were introduced with water already mixed with glucose in it.

5. The chicks were then introduced one after the other dipping their beaks in the drinker.

Today Marks, Day 1 cool

Total Birds: 354 ( plus the additions)
Mortality on arrival: 3 chicks dead.

Power is relatively fair around here. It's about 19hrs of power daily. I should be worried of my bills instead. cry
Come to think of it, I stopped brooding using any form of heat source for a while now. Why use heat if the room temp is just right?

Very true. Which is why having a brooding room saves a lot of costs for farmers. I noticed that the room my incubator is in is always warm, so when my chicks hatch I just leave them there for about a week. And I don’t spend extra money providing heat for them. I just left a thermometer there to know when the temperature drops.

My 20 by 30 feet pen house in preparation of the festive season. I will embark on roofing today. I am first timer with little experience but with a very experiences mentor guiding me. The plan is to raise 400 birds for Christmas.

@jidestroud. Which do you recommend, doc noilers, kuroilers, or broilers?

Re: My Kuroiler Birds From Day Old by jidestroud(m): 9:26am On Jul 28, 2020
@1b8m

Go for broilers.
