Let's talk about this. This is not a criticism, but a correction to help our faith.

Songs play a major role in our Christian lives. We sing at home, in church and in all our gatherings.

But many people have not noticed that some of these songs we sing are not in line with the word of God. In the situation where many people know more songs than scripture, their faith tend to depend more on the songs than the actual word of God.

Unbiblical songs lead to wrong believing. Wrong believing has caused many Christians to pray, and pray without result. The word of God says," you shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall set you free". Therefore if these songs fill us with errors, instead of truth, people will get bad results.

So let's proceed to mention some of these songs that contain errors. Fell free to add yours. Many of them are popular hymns, praise and worship songs, and gospel music.

1. Victory ahead.(Hymn)
Abeg, a Christian ALREADY has victory. God has already made us MORE THAN A CONQUERER. If you see your own victory in the future, you may wait for long and it will never come, until you change your song/confession to the truth that you have victory already.

2. I thank God I got mercy. (Yoruba worship song) - mo dupe pe mori aanu gba.
Part of the lyrics say:
Thank God I got mercy, because not every body got mercy.
The song gives the impression that mercy is not available/abundant, and the singer is happy to be privileged to get mercy, when some people didn't get.

This contradicts the Bible teaching that the mercy of God is abundant. And WHOSOEVER calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

3. I am just a weary pilgrim. ( Hymn - when the saints go marching in)
The above poems starts with the confession:
"I am just a weary pilgrim".

While it is true that we are pilgrims in this world, believing and declaring that I am weary (weak) is unbiblical and will only bring weakness.

The Bible says you shall have why you say ( Mark 11: 23. And as a man thinketh in his heart, so he is. (Proverbs 23:7).

What the Bible says about our strength is:
"The Lord is your strength".
"Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might". Etc.

Let me just stop there. Jesus says, "according to your faith, let it be unto you" Matthew 9:29
So if we sing wrong songs that bring wrong faith, it leads to wrong results.

Share some unbiblical "Christian" songs that you know.

Weary means tired though.

I see nothing wrong in saying victory ahead because it doesn't mean there's no victory currently. I dont even know the song lol so idk.

Thirdly, inasmuch as the bible says God is rich in mercy, his mercy endures forever, etc, it also says he will have mercy on those he chooses to have mercy on and he will have compassion on those he chooses to have compassion on Romans 9 vs 15-16. This is just my opinion though.

I agree with you sha that there are some songs that are not exactly scriptural, songs can be flawed because we as humans are flawed.

So many songs that I love fall into this category, especially the hymns. But I have to guard my heart and screen the songs I sing.

Sometimes if I am tempted to sing them, I will change the words to the ones that are good and biblical.

Some hymns were actually written by people who were going through or had gone through some very tough life situations, persecutions, quite a number of hymns were written by Christians imprisoned for their beliefs, so when the song writer says something like victory ahead understand why he is saying such.

Yes, you are right about the background to some of the songs. But what is unscriptural is unscriptural, no matter the feeling or background that produced it.

Those he chooses to have mercy on are those who ASK for mercy. Mercy is available for all. Just ask in faith and you will receive.

Some of the words of our songs that are unscriptural:
1. I'm not perfect, an't good enough.- if you are born again, God has made you perfect/holy/righteous. Except you still live in sin
2. Jesus is passing this way. Bikko, Jesus abides with me. He is not passing.
3. O Lord send the power. - God has already sent the power on the day of pentecost. You just ask for it and RECEIVE it.
4. All will be well. - Please all is well already. All things work together for good, for those who love God, who are called according to His divine purpose.
Etc.

You are right in your judgement though...but don't forget that we experience different trials of life and go through it differently, also what people experience at a particular point in time usually forms the basis of their gratitude to God, what some people are fasting and praying for, for years, is what some people are taking for granted, for example child bearing, so the song about Mercy is not absolutely wrong, it all depends on the angle you are looking at it from.
And after asking for mercy from God and it gets granted, is it now wrong to thank that God for showing mercy?

If you're contributing on this thread, I suggest you buttress your comments with the Bible, so that it won't just be your opinion. Any opinion that is not biblical is not really helpful.

That is why I said ask IN faith. Faith us the principle of the word of God. So, I mean ask in line with the word of God.

Yes I know, I was just respectfully adding that faith is more than a word repeated constantly, it is Knowings or Knowledges Founded and Grounded on all you Know and can Know About God, His Works and His Ways!

Although most of the things we do as so called Christian are not CHRISTlike, it was coined by the flesh and deception, many people have err, others seek their own glory and profit, we aren't CHRISTians just mere church goers and bench warmers
