WASSCE: Call Meeting Of West African Nations, WAEC – Afenifere Tells FG by jarawa: 7:10am On Jul 10, 2020
The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Thursday advised the federal government to urgently call a meeting of West African countries, and the regional examination body, the West African Examination Council (WAEC), over the impasse on 2020 West African Senior School Certification Examination (WASSCE).

The group said instead of denying the students a complete session, the examination can be managed in a way that the health of the students would not be compromised.

National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin spoke against the backdrop of the decision of the federal government to reverse the reopening of schools.

It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, had announced the reopening of schools for students preparing for primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 examinations. On the basis of the announcement, the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, on Monday, announced that the WASSCE would hold from August 3 to September 5.

But on Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Mall. Adamu Adamu issued a counter directive, saying schools would no longer reopen and that the WASSCE could not hold for now. But Afenifere was furious that the counter directive by the education minister was “yet another reason to know that we are burdened with a disintegrated government in Nigeria.”

Afenifere said since August 3 is still a bit far, “Nigeria should call a meeting of the West African countries involved and WAEC to manage the examinations in the interest of the students without compromising their health. “This is how the government should run to show it cares for the public.

The way our officials conduct themselves is becoming just too shameful. “We advise Mr President to manage his men so that our students are not made to lose a session to the ego fights of our officials,” Odumakin said in the statement. Afenifere stated that it was not comprehensible

“That the PTF would go and announce that schools should go and resume without consultation with the ministry of education, and that the minister will come on TV and be stamping his feet ‘nobody will tell us when we are to open until we are ready,’ if we have an integrated government.

Who is alive and healthy would write or conduct exams.

If reopening schools go south, can those agitating for reopening bring back lives, can they even fund the healthcare bills of those that may be affected?

I wonder why minister , minister of state, and ptf coordinator keep giving different info on same issue. I believe the adamu minister deserve a sack, what arrant nonsense. He's just ego tripping maybe they didn't inform him before taking resumption decisions.

comments like this makes me wonder if actually the leaders are the problem of this country or the followers.
Have you been to the market during this corona era, did you die? Do you knw how crowded churches and mosques are now, did the pastor or imam die?
So because of their is corona the whole nation should stop functioning habi? Do you knw how many come online on Nairaland seeking financial assistance and even have to forgo pride?
Please let Us stop this selfish attitude. the fact say e no affect u Does not give u the right to post non sense

In a sane country, by now Adamu Adamu the said minister of Education should have been sacked.

His statement alone and arrogance associated with the statement shows how incompetent the man is..

Secondly it shows there is no synergy between him and his counterpart minister of state for education who has been spearheading the educational issues since this Covid-19

He is just power drunk or feel not consulted in certain decisions while totally dormant to same issues

A sound educationist right from the onset of the covid-19 resulting to closure of schools, the ministry of education by now should have drawn and concluded a road map to re-opening of schools but what do you have here bunch of docile old men who knows nothing about Education.

You can conduct election, go for campaign, approve direct primary for elections but couldn't come up with a plan for just the younger generation about to write their first standard exam...

Skipping a year will not affect our education but been effected with covid 19 or spreading it will affect everything. Every where is shut down, we just need to understand that we are fighting a bio war.

Good one. Isn't it boko Haram ( book is bad) indirectly?
Markets, churches, mosque are running! Just to write exams for all finals, No. Not even the whole school o. Post secondary schools are still closed o! The FG should think twice o. Is it until they become dullards before they write their finals.

What's the point of writing Waec when they will not resume school this year?

So SS3 students alone can't be socially distanced and follow other guidelines during their waec? It's not even too much for FG to provide masks, handwash and sanitizers for them, yes!

It's the invigilators that are mostly elderly that should just be careful!
You people should reconsider o! My younger brother who had been reading well since, started to just press phone and act cold at home since news of no waec this year...
Some of them already wrote jamb self!

Even Trump is insisting on school resumption! Abegiiii!

Of course, what do you expect from a generation that is immune to western education.

My take, now is the time to make a decision, cause covid 19 has no expected deadline, and should not be a reason to stop education, it will attune to postponing education indefinitely.

That is what happens when you install a seasoned prof as a minister of state of Education and used one herdman from Adamu Herdman university of Akuko to do principal minister.

I swear this govt is dumb, for the past 4months they couldn't device a plan for this students to write their exam. so after shifting the exams and Corona continues till next year, will they now shift it again? you asked only SS3 students and JSS3 to resume for their exams, meaning there will be enough empty classes to allow social distancing and limit crowding, so what's the fear for? The people writing this exams are not kids and are fully aware of the situation at hand. All you need do is give the school the conditions which they are ment to adhere to and penalty for defaulters. so why are they shifting the exams? This people in govt are jokes.. And anyone asking schools not to resume is only but selfish because they don't work as teachers...... if school resume, its a matter of choice. if you de fear, then keep your kids at home and find them lesson teacher.
