I agree with you.

True, there are lots of programmers right now, but there are very few programmers with the right skillsets. At least for the past 2 years, I've been in the forefront of recruiting developers for the company I work for and it is sad to admit that 90% of all programmers in Nigeria are shitty. They all shout "I am a developer" but don't have a clue what it takes to be one.

Regardless of the influx of programmer supply from other parts of the world, I've worked with several guys who are smart and very badass in programming and earn more than 12M NGN gross pray and are here in Nigeria.

My point is, companies will pay you if you are good enough, can sell yourself well, be very smart and don't give a shit about burning rickety bridges.

90% is very bad, why do you say so

BTW what kind of skill set does the 10% possess

Looking forward to your response

I see people not stating what they earn. So I work for a startup in Lagos as a mobile (mostly Android using react native) developer. Salary is 386k/m (with lots of other bonuses).

Every new developer in the company earns an average of 180k/m (lowest level). Salary depends on skillset and how much you can sell yourself. Interview is handled by the CTO himself, so he decides how much you earn on the spot, no HR. Work is flexible and most times I work from home. This also gives me more time for side hustles.

I also do remote gigs with an average of $3000/m.

Once you have the right skillset and work smart, you attract the right offers

So, in other words, you just build mobile apps for the company?

That average of 120 or 130k is roughly $500 usd. Thats very poor for a 30 days full time job. Any good developer can earn that weekly working with foreign firms online.

I will find time to write more on this soonest.
can you show how a nigerian can get these jobs working online? It would b really helpful

Very deep sir but I believe the tax in UK is on a dragon level threat compared to Canada and USA

Jimobama:

Well! I am a software engineer here in the United Kingdom and just graduated, with a start salary of £30,000 which means after deduction I still go home with £1989 = 900,000N at the time of post. But its so because things are very expansive here. House per month is £1200 at most and a lot of bills which depends on the individual. So for me a developer who is earning 200K in naira still live a posh live compare to us here in the UK. When I was still in Nigeria my House rent for a year was around 250K which means I don't have to worry for the rest 11 months.

Guys i know do earn up to 400/500/600k per month, it depends on your skillset and experience, though i mostly freelance but hardly under 200k/mth no matter how long the project would last.

Have a good set of projects you have work on.Be knowlegeable in different stacks, say frontent (vuejs/react/angular --either of them+ the regular CSS/HTML5/JS) then backend (Node/php/python/ruby/golang --be very fluent in at least 2) have good sql and Nosql knowledge a little server administration. Just that no one would dare offer you <300k.

If you are a mobile dev at least be fluent in Java(Android) and Swift or Objective-C (Apple'ish), some SQL/NoSQl favour. and a backend language. You should be good to go at <=300k at any reputable company.

Many other skill types would increase your worth, knowledge with modern tools like Docker, kubernetes, Continous integration etc.

Even UX folks who know their meta learn above 200, though front-end coding knowledge would always increase the worth of a UI/UX designer
hello sir. I am really ready to start this my data science/analyst career but pls sir I got a couple of questions:
1) can you pls tell me where to start or refer me to a site where they will outline where I need to start to the very advance stage?
2) Can I freelance as a data analyst online and get reasonable income?
3) would you advise I study another course in school while I learn data science at my free time or I go to study it in school entirely?
Pls Sir, those are my questions for now. thanks

The guy you quoted has been inactive since 2019.
Let me lend a hand;

*****
1) First you start with Excel, then you start learning Python with its libraries (numpy, pandas, matplotlib), thereafter learn SQL and later on, you move over to PowerBI for data visualisation.

There are a lot of articles and learning materials on the internet.
- You can check out courses at Udemy.com
- You can also apply at w3schools.com
- There are also a lot of YouTube channels that could assist too. For example, check out freecodecamp on YouTube.

For Excel, you can go to YouTube and search “E-DAB”, you should see the playlist under “Excelisfun” channel.

Just use the internet, do some research and gather as much knowledge as possible. There are tons of PDFs, articles and videos that could help. Even online schools.

2) Yes. Most data scientists multi-task. Freelancing and work. You could earn more that way.

3) Actually, this depends on you. You can still learn it either way.
As long as you are dedicated and focused, with constant practice.

Looks as if c++ is useless. Lol
Only thing being mentioned is web development and security and some strange languages. My question, is it that someone who knows one language like c++ cannot get a good job?

Everything is boiling down to you must know almost all languages to be meaningful. Must of you guys have over 10 years of experience.

C++ is far from useless. It's the language used mostly in embedded systems programming and game development. There was a job from zf Sachs posted on Glassdoor days back. It comes with visa sponsorship to Japan. The only language requirement was C++. C++ is even more valuable that most of the languages being mentioned here.

Wow, 2 years now. Yes, there are many shitty programmers but Nigerian companies hardly give them a shot. In Germany, they can employ you as a junior and give you 6 months to learn and pick up. Nigerian dev companies are wicked, they demand 5yrs of experience for junior developer roles, they give you advanced stuff at the interview whilst the proposed salary isn't up to 150k. I would advise any developer shitty or not to move out of Nigeria once they get hold of the basic concepts.

No electricity, expensive data for research but they want superhumans. Haba.

Demanding years of experience for junior developer roles is global. The founder of fastAPI even said so. He saw a job requiring 4 years of that technology experience but he himself created it 1.5 years ago. People should treat job requirements as a wishlist. If 5 years of experience is required. Read it as we are very okay with 6 months of experience. Get to the interview and let them decide.

Experience != Skill level.

Dear Programmers & Other Techies,

Please state the kind of company you work for and where it's located, the kind of work you do there, and how much you're paid.

This information will help programmers like you and employers like me a lot during salary negotiations. Thanks!

I work at an AI company that is into offering home management services and gadgets to customers. It is currently located at Austin, Texas in the United States. I work as a fullstack software engineer where i managed both the frontend and the backend aspect of the web application.

I get paid $2,500 monthly due to the fact i am working remotely. Hope this helps..

Hahaha, I get it now. Anyway, programmers shouldn't give up no matter what. Landed my first gig after 6 interviews, it's all good now.

Any programmer that doesn't practice for a minimum of 4hrs daily, should kindly reevaluate his career path.

Yea. My former salary was $500 but after some talks with the owner, i managed to convince them and negotiated a price amount of $2500 per month and it worked out.

Hey man! Congrats!

But how do you receive your money?

If the rate is around N380 per Dollar then I'll advice you to open a domiciliary account with your favorite bank. With this, the money will get paid directly to your account in Nigeria. Bank rates are around N400 to N450 per Dollar.

Goodluck man!

can you link me to your work place? even $1000 per month is enough for me, I need the remote experience on my CV, I know a recommendation from an inside person would go a long way, I have applied for a lot but it's not forth coming.

Bros it doesn't work that way in the tech industry. He himself can lose his job for recommending you. If you are applying to a lot of jobs and you aren't even getting interviews, check yourself. There's something you aren't doing right.
