Have we been to space,? Yes we have but only within low orbit.

Any human exploration or unmanned flight beyond near orbit is impossible for the simple reason of the existence of a deep belt of radiation on the outer reaches of our planet. This belt of radiation known as the Van Allen's Belt will not only kill any life form in a space ship but fry all electronic gadgets on board.
