Terrible...possible cause may include but not limited to; cheap labour, cheap & fake building materials, poor monitoring of site workers, terrible soil indices of the construction site, greed to build tower of Babel to gain more apartments without technical advise, non consultation of qualified hands but rather a foreman, no architectural plan nor resident architect & civil engineer on site. The government that should regulate all these, only end up having agents who will go and mark 'X' and inscribe 'stop work' on buildings being constructed....once they have been settled, you just go ahead with your construction cos I have never seen them return back to inscribe 'resume work' on such buildings. Nigeria has not gotten it right in anything so far.

wat I don't understand na by force to use parafet build hux ,the load of this parafet is times 2 of the hux .. mostly when socked with water

Cheap doesn't have to do with quality but the quantity

No such thing as a quack engr.
Before u can be a certified engineer u pass standardized tests + practical experience in your respective field.

Mason's calling themselves engrs all over the place esp in he east and west are the reasons for the building collapse...

Go to areas where the practice is minimal and u hardly find building collapsing.

Don't try to wrrigle out of this one...
Everybody thinks the know all about construction that's why they fail to follow advice and hire certified engineers for their jobs

Putting ur 15m plus project in the hands of an artisan, u have urself to blame.

This is a clear cut case of poor or non existent supervision which or may not relate to a deficient structural design
Or hiring of quacks claiming to be engineers..

Blocks aren't structural members and are hardly ever load bearing...

What's ur point

This kind of nonsense is the rule in Nigeria. Substandard buildings and raising of illegal structures, them plenty for this my side self. They will now use it to block the gutters that is why this state always has issues with flood.

When it comes to the construction of storey buildings, soil test to determine the bearing capacity of the soil is very key, followed by the use of appropriate reinforcement, never you economize cement and then make use of the appropriate aggregates most especially coarse aggregate.

Wriggle out of what?
And what do you think I am, a musician?

I know what I said from looking at that structure and how it collapse. Any engineer that doesn't supervise his work when building more than one storey building, should bear what ever happen. It is your career at stake when the lawsuit start coming.

From my own observation, i can deduce that the building collapsed due to substandard blocks used in the building construction, if you observe closely you will see that the block are brown and sandy in nature, whish interprets that the proportion of cement to sand is no proportional.

Yeah, but it shouldn't end there. There should be an investigation into why it happened in order to prevent similar collapses in future. What if it had happened after it was completed and people have moved in?
