Happy Sunday to all Nairalanders.

Congratulations to us all. By God's special grace, we're seeing the last Sunday in July despite all the evil happenings all over. To God be the glory!

Sabbath is biblical and observed by Jews from sun down on Friday till sundown on Saturday.

It was ordained by God as the day in which He rested after creating the heaven and earth in six days.

Sabbath was really made by God for mankind because God

- Does not sleep or slumber He doesn't get tired like we do. He's a Spiritual supernatural being. We are flesh and we get tired, hence we do need rest.
- God wants a day to have us to Himself without the distractions that trading or other activities bring into worship.
- Every living thing God made needs to rest to avoid breaking down.
- There is a place of rest in God spiritually that we need to enter for our own peace of mind. It is possible to lay down and try to sleep but if your spirit/ mind is not at rest ( busy or worried) you won't sleep!

Do you observe Sabbath?
Which day do you observe yours? (Friday Saturday or Sunday)
Why do you worship or rest on that particular day of the week?
Have churches been opened in your State?

Do have a wonderful Sunday! grin

Hi,
Please read the below excerpt to understand the Sabbath God actually meant.
Finallydead:

We Christians haven't really understood the place of the law and until we give it it's rightful place, the ultimate plan of God will elude us. The statutes of God are eternal. Not a single iota of the Torah will pass away until all are fulfilled in Christ(Mt5:18). We should aim to fulfill the Sabbath now through faith in Christ. Just as Paul points out, there is a Sabbath ahead for every believer to labour to enter after their initial faith(Heb4:1, 9-11).
What is the Sabbath? It is the rest we come to where we no longer work but God does all the work in us as seen in the Lord Jesus(Jn14:10). It is experiencing this same oneness He had with the Father where EVERYTHING in our lives springs out from His work within(Jn17:21)
We labour to enter it by seeking God daily, surrendering everything to Him, growing in prayer until He perfects this work in us and we no longer do these but He does all.

Let no one be deceived, we can never enter into this rest until we have truly surrendered our entirety to God.

The way we call a day is definitely different from the Bible's definition of a day....Thanks for this insight

When God created the world, He rested on the seventh day. When God gave the ten commandments to Israel, He commanded Israel to rest on the seventh day as well. In Exodus 20:11 the reason given for that is that God rested on the seventh day from His creation work. In Deuteronomy 5, we find the second version of the ten commandments. The reason that God gives to rest on the Sabbath is to remember that the Lord delivered Israel from Egypt (Deuteronomy 5:15).

Sabbath law in the New Testament
So the Sabbath given by God in the Old Testament is the seventh day. It started with sunset on Friday and ended with sunset on Saturday. That is the Sabbath that the Jews are still celebrating.

How is the situation in the New Testament? In the New Testament we read that we are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). Christians do not have to submit to the ceremonial law anymore. The New Testament shows in several ways that the Sabbath law does not apply to Christians:

All other nine commandments are repeated in the New Testament, but the Sabbath commandment is not repeated.
Paul never wrote to the gentile churches he planted that they had to keep the Sabbath. Since the Sabbath was not part of their culture, that certainly would have been necessary if Paul had been of the opinion that they had to keep a Sabbath rest.
The churches in the New Testament met on Sundays, not on the Sabbath, like the Jewish synagogues.
Paul explicitly teaches that the Sabbath is just a shadow of things to come, but that the reality is found in Jesus. He gives us the heavenly rest. Therefore Paul forbids us to judge other people on the basis of whether or not they observe a Sabbath (Colossians 2:16-17).
The Lord’s day
The Jews met on the Sabbath. Christians started meeting on Sundays (see Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2). They did that because Jesus was risen from the dead on a Sunday. And appeared to them at least on the first and second Sunday after He was risen (John 20:19,26). Almost immediately the Sunday was called ‘the Lord’s day’ (Revelation 1:10).

So it is clear that Christians do not need to keep the Sabbath on Friday and Saturday. It is also clear that the church, following Jesus’ lead, from the beginning had its main meetings on Sunday. This does not mean that the Sabbath laws were transferred to the Sunday. We are under grace, not under the law.

That the Sabbath is fulfilled in Jesus, and that we therefore do not painstakingly have to follow the Old Testament Sabbath laws, is great news. But it would not be wise if we would use that to say we can now work each and every day. That the Lord rested on the seventh day of His creation work still is a powerful lesson for us. Rest is a blessing that we receive from the Lord. That the Sabbath law is fulfilled in Jesus probably means we should enjoy rest more, not less than in the Old Testament; that we should focus on God longer, not shorter than in the Old Testament.

Jesus’ fulfillment
While we do not need to be afraid that we are sinning if we work on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, one great way to honor Jesus’ fulfillment of the Sabbath law is to set the Sunday as much apart as possible to go to church, to meet Christian brothers and sisters, and to focus on God through prayer, Bible reading and the reading of Christian books.

since its rest day, that means all days of the week is my sabath days because am jobless and rest all day..
the bible do says "keep the sabath day holy" and i think most people dont understand that word..
people think it means keeping the sunday morning holy because that explains why people choose to be holy or saints only on a sunday morning.......hypocrites.
about the church matter- its been long since i attend church because my church is on lockdown after the head of my prayer department tested positive for covid...
my pastor vex and lock church gate and carry the key go on quarantine for ABJ...

My understanding of it, is that "true Sabbath" = eternal rest. That is to say spending your eternity with God is your real Sabbath Day. God rested on the "7th day" but the 7th day is actually not a "day", it is eternity
Re: What Is Your Understanding Of Sabbath? by Offpoint: 9:20am On Jul 26, 2020
The topic clearly stated one should give his/her own understanding of what sabbath day is... I go through the comments and I'm seeing:

*Jesus is Lord
*The end time is event is...
*Just accept Jesus as your personal lord and savior..
*God is Good...
ETC
Non of the above is related, nor close to the above question....

That's my greatest many Christians. They're very limited in knowledge of their religion.
Most Nigeria Christians lack deep knowledge of their religion Muslim/Christians... They only have the basic knowledge of JESUS IS THE SAVIOR, REPENT, HEAVEN, MY PASTOR.

These are what even non Christians can effortlessly speaks upon.

Sabbath day is an holy day for the christains . It's day to rest and the day to connect with God through the holy spirit or reading, listening and meditating the Word of God.

Before you do any activity on Sundays do the above first.
