Two-Storey Building Collapses In Abuja, Traps 10 People by OkhaiAsein(m): 7:41am On Jul 26, 2020
A two-storey building under construction in Abuja collapsed on Saturday trapping 10 persons with one seriously injured.
The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN), reports that the incident happened behind Dawaki Modern Market, in Galadima area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. and the building suffered a total collapse, leaving some its occupants, who were workers at the site, injured.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Fire Service and the Nigerian Police Force responded to the distress call and rescued the workers.
The person who was seriously wounded was among three persons immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Idris Abbas, Director-General, FEMA, said emergency response was swiftly activated immediately the agency got the distress call.
He added that based on the report the agency received the building was a bungalow but the developer was trying to upgrade it to a two-strorey building.
“Ten persons were trapped, three were rescued and were taken to the hospital while others are okay,” he said.
He also advised builders to desist from contravening the building plan as approved by the development control department of the FCT.

Edward Adedokun, Director, Search and Rescue, NEMA, said the agency was on ground immediately it received the distress call to coordinate all agencies at the site of the building collapse.
He added that the agency would ensure that all necessary clearance operation was concluded to ascertain that no victim was left trapped in the rubble.
Muktar Galadima, Director, Department of Development Control, added that his organisation had given the developer a ‘stop work’ notice when it noticed a modification of the building.
“On the 17th of this month, when our officers were moving round and monitoring developments, they noticed the modification of the building from a bungalow to a two-strorey building and he was issued a stop work notice.
“He, however, took advantage of the weekend and resumed work and this incident happened, and due process as well as engineering process was not followed,” he said.
Harisu Abdullahi, one of the survivors said he was working on the first floor of the building when he noticed the building collapsing and he regained consciousness when he noticed he was being rushed to the hospital.

There are too many quacks in the Nigerian building industry, and clients aren't helping matters too. As an architect, I literally force my clients to consult structural engineers in multi level buildings. Clients just want to cut cost, and they cite examples of their friends who have built such without engineers. We need to get used to "standards" in this country, else, we ain't moving no where. May the injured get well soon. Happy Sunday.

No way!

This is the FCT for crying out loud. How did we get to this point? It is very easy to prevent the strings of building collapse incidences in Nigeria if standards are truly adhered to.

Make it mandatory for the cost of stringent checks to be borne by would-be building owners and contractors. Government should enforce a law that makes it compulsory for council sign-offs at every stages of construction of suspended slabs -formwork, reinforcement placements, concrete mixture (test results obtained), concrete casting and curing. All these stages must be signed-off on.

The cost of implementing a fruitful check and balance may come to N50,000 per square metre of intended floor slab area. With this, anyone interested in developing more than a single floor (bungalow) structure must be prepared to pay the cost. I don't care if rents go high as a result of this measures. Quality control checks must be undertaken beyond what is currently obtainable. I got a blueprint towards nipping this issue in the bud but Nigerians are accustomed to substandard lifestyles that they are willing to defend mediocrity with their lives -literally.

Living in Nigeria is now dangerous, Nigerians have become endangered specie and will soon go into extinction.

It's better to find a way out of the "shithole" before it totally collapse on us all.

Mind you being a big man cannot save you as it stands now, some years ago, the governor of akwa ibom narrowly escaped while a church collapse killing tens of people. Several big people have been victims of kidnapping, don't forget how other big men have also being killed by their domestic staffs.

The only and best solution i can think of now is get out of the country if you have the capacity.
I've never in my life thought of leaving my beautiful country but now, I'm convinced that's the best thing to do which I'll surely do as soon as i have the capacity to.

Nigeria should not just think of erecting high rise building ooo, common two story buildings we can't keep to standards, our policy makers are not capable of regulating anything. The only regulation they're capable of implementing is how cash will continue to flow into their personal pockets.

As much as we continue to worship money in this country (forget about being religious, we're all hypocrites hiding under the banner of religion), everyone is in danger, nobody, i mean no one is safe, not even the president.
