About the unsafe cities I listed, I started my comment with “in my opinion”. We all have different experiences and see things differently. Some people would tell you it is dangerous to live in Lagos. Some would say it is safe. To come here and say my opinion about racism is not valid because you don’t have the same experience, is stupid.

In 2017, i and 2 friends decided to visit Cologne after exams. Since we were students, we didn't have to pay for the slow train but if we were to take the fast one we had to pay.

We took the slow train to Cologne and throughout the journey we weren't inspected. On our way back home, we decided to take the fast train without paying for tickets since we weren't inspected when coming. I was sleeping, dreaming of God knows what when i felt a hand on my shoulders, i opened my eyes - lo and behold it was the train inspectors, ah aye mi temi bami!

I was asked for my ticket, i tried to play smart as a Nigerian. First i said in english that i don't understand german, then one of them spoke english to me, chai which kind life be this . Then i remembered I had some used tickets, i decided to pretend like i was searching for the tickets among the used ones hoping they will get tired or the train will get to my destination and they will let me go.

These guys patiently waited for me, in fact they took the seats behind us , my friends already paid 50€ each and they were waiting for me. The inspectors told me if i don't hurry up, i will be taken to the station, immediately i heard that i brought out my debit card to pay quickly.

My 50€ was gone just like that. It was a funny ride home, we still laugh about that incident till today.

Of course west stands out. In everything both getting English jobs or even jobs without work permit or not even knowing how to salut in German. Jobs like KFC and McDonald’s, dhl, Amazon don’t really require u to know the language. Sachsen is the biggest and most industrialized eastern states save for Berlin. At least we have 3 VW plants and a Porsche plant in Leipzig that give 100s of students jobs when available.

When I got my first Mercedes job in Bremen, the guys I went to stay with in same city told me it’s not possible to get direct job that they have been in that city for 20 years, that I must go through an agency. Germany is a free country, there is no corner of the country you would go without seeing plenty of Nigerians, unless the schools in the city don’t offer English courses.
Racism has died down, what we are having now is systematic racism. We have come and changing the ideas they has about blacks, we work hard and smart and get good grades in school, use their women and dump them with reckless abandon, against their old notion that we re lazy, unintelligent and looking for paper.

It’s a central town in German. Like it’s a center of germany just like Jena and Erfurt. You can spend few hours to any part of germany from their especially western states. I bet you would see load of Nigerians there or Cameroonians and your ticket can take you to efurt to get jobs in press company of dhl cos that’s where everyone I know is that place works

My London story continued....

So I decided to take a bus to this Peckham I always heard about. I thought people were exaggerating, until I got there. I had to check my map to make sure I was not in Nigeria. Very dirty, loud, smelly, and full of weirdos. It was like a combination of Obalende, Oshodi market and Onitsha market together.

I entered a Burger King to buy food, and there was this Nigerian man and woman there. They were both shouting, speaking Yoruba. I understood what he was saying and it was about his family members asking him for money. I had not heard anyone speak so loudly in public, since I left Nigeria. I knew in my mind that Peckham was everything I heard about it and more.

I walked around and saw lots of stores selling many things. There’s nothing you won’t find in Peckham. Nigerians everywhere speaking Yoruba and pidgin, doing hair, selling food, and what not. You’ll also find Indians and Arabs with their own stores and they’re even worse than the Africans there. I refused to eat there because I was afraid to sh*t.

You’ll see names like “Beyoncé hair salon”, “Tina nail shop”. I even saw one they called “Obalende Suya”.... I almost fainted. Nigerians have turned that place to Oshodi market. Unlike Germany where everything is in the shop, in Peckham they put their market on the street.
I walked around in amazement until my friend sent me his address and asked me to come over.

Language. It’s a legbu work, no body cares about the standard. You can actually use Doppel translator to convert ur documents. Their cv don’t need all ur too much stories. Just ur address, school attended.

Na when u wan look for professional job u go give professional touch to everything like putting up ur pictures and writing some cure descriptions in ur cover letter.

But for student side jobs, just tell them u re a student and needs job. Tell them ur school and course.

Despite how weird Peckham was the first time I went there, it felt good to experience a glimpse of Nigeria again. I walked to the bus stop and took a bus until I got to Trafalgar square and it felt like I was in another country. The difference between Westminster and Peckham was like two different countries.

After my tour, I decided to go to Ilford to see my friend. This was a very long journey with the bus. I got to Ilford and it was already dark. Google maps failed me and that place felt totally unsafe, I just started praying to God.
I eventually asked someone how I could get to my destination and that was how I went to see my friend.

It was really good to see him after many years. The flat belonged to a white guy and my friend was squatting there with one other guy from Jamaica. I had not even dropped my bag, the white guy came and asked me if I could help him with £5. Huh? Me that came to London with only £60 that is almost finished, and oyibo wey get house is begging me for money.

I had many questions to ask my friend, because his lifestyle on Facebook was not the same as reality. All that fashion and posing with cars on Facebook, he didn’t even have his own room. We ate indomie and slept on the floor with blanket.
I just kept my opinion to myself, make dem no pursue me comot for house.

What advice would you give anybody hoping to sustain himself entirely from part time work as regards the right skills to acquire before coming? The next day we walked around Ilford and OMG, so many Indians. It was like living in India and Pakistan. There was nothing special to see there, so we took some pictures and relaxed to eat ice cream.

Later in the evening, some Nigerian guys came to the flat. It was a full house and two of them came with their white girlfriends. We talked and it was so fun. I told them about Germany and my experience in Peckham. Later, they told one of the white girls to cook rice so we could eat. The girl stood up and went to the kitchen, my mouth was open in shock.

I thought it was all a joke of some kind. Then I went to the kitchen and saw this white girl turning pot of jollof rice, I nearly collapsed.
The white people in London are different. I never imagined that white and black people would get along so well, that there’ll be no culture shock. Even the white boy sat with us and ate the jollof rice. He even knew Nigerian music.

The next day it was time to go back to Germany. My friend walked me to the bus stop and I took a bus to Victoria station, then a bus back to Germany, via Brussels. This time the immigration procedure was different. When we got to the border of Germany, the bus stopped and policemen came inside the bus to check us.

They checked our passports and residence permit, and verified it with the office via phone. They also checked our bags with security dogs. One of the passengers didn’t have a valid permit, so they escorted him out of the bus and the rest of us continued the journey to Dusseldorf.

I fell in love with London so much that I couldn’t wait to visit again. Everything about Germany just annoyed me for 2 weeks until I settled in. It felt good to be in a clean environment again with less stress, but it also felt boring.

London has become my second home and I visit there at least 4 times in a year. I’ve also visited Manchester but I prefer London. People in Manchester will eat every nonsense with bad hygiene. Public transportation is also better in London than in Manchester. But Manchester is more chill and calm.

Here are some comparisons I can make between London and Berlin:

London is more beautiful from a touristic point of view, but Berlin is beautiful in general. Berlin beats London in housing, streets, train stations, environment. London was kinda built to attract tourists, but if you go inside the corners of London, you’ll be disappointed. In terms of architecture, it’s a draw.

London is more multicultural and less racist. The white people in London are very informed about racism and know what not to say. Berlin is full of stupid people who will argue, instead of picking up a book to read. The other Europeans in Berlin are more ignorant than the Germans.

London is bright and colorful. People are friendly, happy, and easy to get along with. Lots of fashion, culture and lifestyle. Berlin is more lively and has better night life, but people are angry. The fashion in Berlin is boring and the lifestyle is more like “I don’t care”.
You can find clubs with African music and lots of Africans in London. In Berlin it’s either Techno or House music, filled with weird people dancing like characters from The Walking Dead.

People in London like to curse. You’ll hear someone say “Fvck off” every minute. They don’t hide their feelings and they don’t hold back their tongue. People in Berlin are more respectful but grumpy. They won’t curse you but they’ll respond rudely. Germans are generally respectful and mind their business.

If you can speak German up to B1/B2 level, and of course wanna come to Germany, then I'll say you are doing well. It would improve your ease of getting a job, just perfect your B2 when you arrive ( if you must).
Your python projects in Gis would be important, also good experience from Nigeria, or a related degree would skyrocket your chances.
Get a driving license and then show it within your first six months of arrival, you would pay less to then get the German driving license( to my knowledge) since it's usually very expensive.
If you can ride forklifts, these would also give you high paying jobs anywhere in Germany as a student especially with your level of German

Berlin is cheaper than London. Berlin is one of the cheapest, world class major cities in the world. London is annoyingly expensive. That’s why I don’t judge people who squat in an apartment.

Berlin is cleaner, more space, fresher air, and relaxed. London is dirty, over populated, and life is too fast.

There is a pressure in London to live up to people’s expectations. It’s like, people judge each other based on what they have and life is a competition. That’s why many people in London are so fake. They feel the pressure to maintain an image and compare their lives to someone else.
In Berlin, nobody cares. Life is peaceful and free. No competition, no pressure. Move at your own pace and nobody will judge you.

There are more successful Black people in London. Black people there have come a long way in terms of equal opportunities, compared to Berlin. If you have a British passport, you can say you’re British and nobody will question you.
But even if you were born in Germany and have never been to Africa, you won’t be regarded as German as long as you’re not white.

Nigerians have ruined London. Tell any girl you’re from Nigeria, she’ll put her slippers on her head and run away. There’s also this discernment between Jamaicans and Nigerians in London. Berlin still has love for Africans. There are still prejudices but those are towards the refugees and the drug dealers.

Contrary to what people think about London being populated with Nigerians, I think that is overhyped. There are many nationalities in London, that Nigerians are just a small fraction. You can live in London and not be in contact with Nigerians if you don’t want to. It also depends on where you live.

Berlin is a lot safer than London. Even though I did not experience it, I heard a lot about knife crimes in London. Someone I know, got robbed by a group of guys on the street. That would likely not happen in Berlin.

In London, you cannot really drink alcohol in public. There are written signs where it is totally forbidden in some areas. You can get away with it if you do it carefully and responsibly, but you can be stopped by the police.
In Berlin you can drink as you want, even inside the train. You can even drink until the alcohol is coming out of your ears, police will drive you home and make sure you’re safe. You’ll only have problems if you’re being violent.

The accent in London can be tormenting. They speak as if half of their tongue is cut off and they can’t finish a word. They also talk too much! If you enter a bus, you can’t experience silence. People are always speaking loudly. I also experienced a black guy who came into the bus and started preaching. You know how they preach inside bus in Lagos. Would never happen in Berlin.

What advice would you give anybody hoping to sustain himself entirely from part time work as regards the right skills to acquire before coming? I read something about the need to get a driving license from 9ja, can you be more specific about it? IT and Engineering can’t go without jobs in this Country. Learning german from nija had a very very important attribute. When you learn the language from here, it’s always difficult to understand because they would not explain to you in your terms in English, because you are in class with Arabs and Chinese who language structure is different, you may have to follow blindly till you see the light.
B1 or b2 is super in nija, you come here, you repeat your last class and forge ahead. It’s so much required to blend in and maybe start looking for permanent jobs.

For skills, any skill in IT you have is good, as job listings would tell you what they need. Some basically require you to be super good with excel and it’s enough for them, others go to SQL but all depending on the job. Mechanical engineering would require their specific It skills against management. So, in your field, be the best.

Driving license, if you can drive very well in nija, it’s enough. Most time, conversion is difficult but if you pass their exams, driving test will be almost free but if you can’t drive at all, it will cost u about 2k euros.
It’s a very important requirement for most jobs.

Last job I almost got, the last stages, they asked me for Klaas B drivers license and I don’t have and I got a leider nicht reply after I don celebrate new job finish.

Berlin is a lot safer than London. Even though I did not experience it, I heard a lot about knife crimes in London. Someone I know, got robbed by a group of guys on the street. That would likely not happen in Berlin.

The accent in London can be tormenting. They speak as if half of their tongue is cut off and they can’t finish a word. They also talk too much! If you enter a bus, you can’t experience silence. People are always speaking loudly. I also experienced a black guy who came into the bus and started preaching. You know how they preach inside bus in Lagos. Would never happen in Berlin.
