Ogundipe lived for nothing and died for nothing. He wasn't a soldier even though he was in the army. May his rest cowardly soul rest on. |

HedwigesMaduro:In actual fact, Gowon was the one reluctant to move his "foreign" troops from yorubaland 'cause he knew the yorubas were interested in getting involve in a fight between the east and the north. This was why gowon was dilly-dallying with awo's simple request. Ojukwu was certainly aware of the situation in western region at the time. Moreover, Awo intimated ojukwu with this information during his enugu visit YET he (ojukwu) and his BLF insisted and proceeded in bringing his fight with their former bed-mates, to our shores. |

Ogundipe was a coward just like Adebayo. On the death of Ironsi, Brigadier Ogundipe and Colonel Adebayo were the two most most senior officers of the Nigerian Army. Yet Ogundipe was chased out of Lagos while Adebayo was made Military Governor of the Western Region by his junior, Lt Colonel Gowon. What a disgrace Yorubas were literally held hostage in their own land by the Northerners, their Military Governor, Lt Col Fajuyi was murdered and their two most senior officers, Brigadier Ogundipe and Colonel Adebayo, who were then the two most senior officers of the Nigerian Army, were shoved aside to make way for Lt Col Gowon who was far junior to them. In all of this, the Yoruba nation kept mute out of their fear of the North. They let the North steamroll over them without even the slightest protest. Even to this day, many Yorubas still praise themselves for allowing the Northerners use them as a door mat while insulting Ojukwu who stood up to fight for the dignity of his people |

kingzizzy:If the Eastern GOCs Njoku,Nzefili Madiebo, Anwunah had taken control of their Battalions instead of all fleeing to the East Brigadier Ogundipe would have had a leg to stand on and could have taken control of the Country. As it was even Ojukwu was phoning him from hiding in Onitsha! With which soldiers was Ogundipe to put down the mutinous northern soldiers avenging their leaders murders, when all of their Eastern Commanding Officers had already run away!? Ironsi had appointed mostly Easterners as GOCs of the battalions and Military formations and all of them absconded when they should have fought the rebellious Northern Soldiers. Not one of them put up a fight. Only Ogunewe who was in Enugu negotiated peace with his Northern Soldiers who were not willing to risk a battle because they were already trapped in the East. |

Christistruth00:How could the take control of their commands when they were in the North? How would that have been even remotely possible? The North is not their Region. But Ogundipe and Adebayor were all shoved aside right their in their own Region. How the Yorubas stood idly by and their Military Governor was murdered, their most senior who should have been president was chased out of Nigeria, all of this happening in Yoruba land, and they did absolutely nothing Can you imagine if Enugu had been capital of Nigeria and had Ironsi as head of state and Ojukwu as Military Governor of the Eastern Region. Northerners will go and kill Ojukwu and Ironsi then bring Gowon to come and rule from Enugu? Igbos would burnt Enugu down with Gowon and his Northerners. But the North knew that Yorubas would do nothing, thats why the Northerners did what the liked in the West and got away with it |

kingzizzy:Njoku's battalion was the Lagos battalion that Ogundipe needed to take control of Lagos. Njoku was nowhere to be found he had fled East. Even the Eastern Commanding Officers in the North had fled almost to a man so where was Ogundipe to get reinforcements and backup from? The Northern GOC at Ibadan who was part of the Coup? How come you are not complaining about Yoruba standing by Idly when then Premier Akintola and his Nephew were slaughted by Nwobosi? I smell hypocrisy |

Christistruth00:Do more research before you write the nonsense you wrote above. Njoku was in Ibadan Government House when the place was surrounded by troops led by Major TY Danjuma. He escaped Government House with multiple bullet wounds and fled to the east. As for Akintola, he brought it upon himself. Nwobosi went to arrest Fani Kayode, he gave himself up without drama and later survived the incident without a scratch. Nwobosi moved to arrest Akintola and Akintola opened fire. Even Fani Kayode was shouting that he should drop the gun and give himself up peacefully, he refused. In the crossfire, Akintola and some his household were killed. |

Nigeria was a mess right from the onset... Nigeria is not a God's creation. The one's we call heros are actually cowards. There was no love when the country was created yet the so called heros pressed ahead for independence. I'm sure they will be ashamed wherever they are. |

kingzizzy:Njoku ran away to the East instead of going to take control of his battalion in Lagos to fight the Counter Coup., All the Eastern Officers ran away instead of putting down the Counter Coup. They all abandoned Ogundipe and their Miitary Posts Not a single one of them put up a fight. Even Ojukwu went into hiding fleeing Enugu for Onitsha. The Why did Nwobosi also kill Akintolas Nephew what was his offence? Below is a list of the Commanding Officers during the Counter Coup only 2 out of 11 were non Easterners and none of the Eastern GOCs gave Ogundipe any Military support or make any effort to rescue Ironsi their fellow Easterner they all fled. http://www.waado.org/nigerdelta/Nigeria_Facts/MilitaryRule/Omoigui/NorthCounterCoup.htm

What would you call all the Battalion Commanders and Officers that fled to the East instead of Countering the Coup and rescuing the kidnapped Ironsi? How were they going to Counter the Northern Coup while fleeing? |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by kingzizzy: 11:03pm On Jul 31, 2020 |
Christistruth00:You want an Njoku who barely managed to escape government house Ibadan with multiple gun shot wounds to go and take control of what? Are you for real? The Eastern officers were been killed in the North and West where they had no support, but they were not being killed in the East or Midwest, the North had no hold there. Had Ogundipe had any ounce of dignity, he should have assumed his rightful position as head of state in the absence of Ironsi and urged the Yoruba nation not allow anyone subjugate them in their own land. But I think Ogundipe knew that his own people had no stomach for armed struggle. He knew his people could not fight, so hr went to a ship and sailed away. But Igbos refused to accept Northern imposition the way Yorubas were just too willing to accept it. So Igbos declared their own country and fought. Its easy to accept to be a slave, you dont have to embark on the difficult and perilous act of fighting for freedom. Only serious people reject slavery and fight for freedom, just like Igbos did. |

kingzizzy:. Hypocrisy, so Njoku a Battalion Commander is permitted to run away all the way to the East instead of fighting the Coup. But Ogundipe who was a Staff Officer with no infantry troops but who still launched 2 unsuccessfully attacks against the Northern Soldiers with only his available Military Cooks,Clerks and drivers was labelled a Coward What would you call all the Infantry Battalion Commanders and Officers that fled to the East instead of Countering the Coup and rescuing the kidnapped Head of State Ironsi? Joseph Adeola the Police Commissioner of the West was trying to rescue Ironsi and Fajuyi sending a Helicopter to rescue them from the surrounded Government house at Ibadan, why didn't the Eastern Officers give him the support necessary to rescue Ironsi and Fajuyi, instead of all running away .weren't they trained Soldiers?. How were they going to Counter the Northern Coup while fleeing? How come none of them was brave enough to attempt to rescue Ironsi? Is that what they were taught in the Military Academy? With which Military force was Ogundipe supposed to take Control of the Army and Country after 9 of 11 crucial Military Infantry Commanders had absconded to the East and the remaining 2 Commanders were Northerners one of them (Akahan at Ibadan) was part of the Coup the Other Shuwa was in Kano and with Oluleye had locked up the Kano Armoury thus preventing any Coup in Kano. Njoku instead of him to do something as simple as phoning his and the other battalions where the Coup plotters had not yet taken control and ask for the Armoury to be locked up by trusted Soldiers so as to prevent any further Coup actions . He just ran away without any trace. The next time he was heard from he was in the East. |

Napoleondegreat:You people very fast to call people weak, coward etc of which this traits are more of a good representatives of your people. Ironsi wasn't supposed to be president in the first place. Igbo has never supported Yoruba course, they will rather join hands with the northerners to revenge the death of Ironsi on Ogundipe. |

Napoleondegreat:And it doesn't occur to you that prior to Ogundipe's alleged refusal to seize power hence failing to do what Yorubas we're allegedly supposed to do, Azikiwe too had already, on behalf of Igbos, refused to do what he was supposed to do by declining power which was legally due to him by virtue of Yorubas's proposal of the East-West alliance that would have in the first instance prevented the coup which led to the suggested illegal seizure of power by Ogundipe much later on? Ogundipe could be excused for the fact that military involvement in politics was illegal regardless of the circumstances. But how do we excuse Zik's and Igbos' refusal to seize power through a legitimate democratic opportunity which Yorubas threw open to them and by which Nigeria would have been salvaged from day one? |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Deadlytruth(m): 9:24am On Aug 01, 2020 |
Napoleondegreat:And if Azikiwe had assumed legitimate power by accepting the proposed NCNC-AG alliance, don't you think all the events which culminated in the dastardly coup and put Nigeria in the Ogundipe versus Gowon situation which ended up in the civil war would have been altogether avoided? |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Deadlytruth(m): 9:36am On Aug 01, 2020 |
Napoleondegreat:Soldiers take power through carefully planned and executed coups like Ironsi did and Ifeajuna tried to do but failed. How then could Ogundipe have been able to just miraculously seize power in those circumstances without having had a carefully hatched and nurtured coup plot prior to that moment in question? Or you think to seize power militarily is a one officer show? |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Deadlytruth(m): 9:44am On Aug 01, 2020 |
Napoleondegreat:Ojukwu's excuse for pushing for Ogundipe's assumption of power was that the tradition of seniority in the army should be held sacrosanct. Good argument, no doubt. But how did you want Ogundipe to have trusted in Ojukwu's feigned commitment to seniority when all before then he was part and parcel of the Ironsi's administration and he couldn't impress it upon his boss to punish the January 15 coupists for gruesomely murdering their seniors like Ademulegun, Shodeinde, Maimalari, etc innocently? So much for a sticker to the tradition of respect for seniority. |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Deadlytruth(m): 9:50am On Aug 01, 2020 |
Napoleondegreat:Wasn't that how Ademoyega implicitly trusted his Eastern accomplices to eliminate all the names in their mutually agreed hit list only for them to deliberately do a very shabby job at the point of implementation? |

Racoon:Story! Seniority got bastardized before then, and that was when Ojukwu and Ironsi refused to arraign before any military tribunal the Nzeogwus, Ifeajunas, Ademoyegas, Okafors, Anuforos, etc who gruesomely murdered their senior officers like Maimalari, Shodeinde, etc in very cold blood. |

Deadlytruth:You have a burden of always defending anything that goes against the East. This post is strictly discussing only the events of the counter coup which even the Yoruba author of the article placed blames on Ogundipe who failed at that point and Adebayo who even went as low as begging his junior to be made a governor of Western region. This idea of always blaming Igbo even in cases of honest mistakes is what kept Nigeria where it is today |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Napoleondegreat(op): 12:01pm On Aug 05, 2020 |
This post actually focuses on the events of the counter coup alone. Am disturbed that people are bringing earlier events in order to justify the lapses of certain individuals identified int the write up |
| Re: Ironsi’s Death, My Role In Brigadier Ogundipe’s Escape by Napoleondegreat(op): 12:09pm On Aug 05, 2020 |
I made it clear that the very palpable Ogundipe's failior and the weakness of Adebayo has nothing to do with the Yoruba as a tribe. This things were just the character challenge of this two individuals on the basis of which the author wrote. On what ground are people now defending them as if their weaknesses approximate to that of Yorubas as a whole Even the author rightly apportioned the due blames to them and he too is a Yoruba. He knew those coward acts do not represent him as a person. So those of you looking for sundry excuses to absolve Brig. Ogundipe of blames should know that it is an indirect affirmation that the well established cowardice and failior of Ogundipe represent theirs as individuals |

Napoleondegreat:You really can't treat any part of our history in isolation. They are all interwoven. Did I hear you say say honest mistakes made by Igbos? So only Igbos made honest mistakes while other tribes made deliberate mistakes hence your continuous bashing of them for the consequences of those 'honest' mistakes made by Igbos? And why don't you also give Ugundipe some benefit of the same honest mistake? |
