God’s Unchanging word – Part 1 By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi 02 August 2020 | 4:11 am There are many misconceptions about the role of Jesus Christ, especially by religious people. One such misconception is that Jesus came to override the Old Testament scriptures. But nothing could be farther from the truth. He emphatically declared: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets.” “The law and the prophets” refer to the whole of the Old Testament (Matthew 11:13; 22:36-40; John 1:45; Acts 13:15; 28:23). Our Lord’s authority did not contradict or cancel the authority of the Scriptures. Jesus Christ upheld the permanence of the Scriptures. His message and God’s written Word are inseparable. As God does not change (Malachi 3:6), His Word also does not change. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets.” In its most limited sense, “the law” referred to the Ten Commandments. In a broader sense, it was used to refer to the Pentateuch, the five books of Moses. In a still broader sense, it was used to speak of the entire Old Testament (Romans 13:8-10; James 2:8-11; John 7:19-23; Matthew 5:18; Luke 16:16,17). The prophets reiterated and reinforced the law. All their warnings, admonitions and predictions were directly or indirectly based on the Mosaic Law. God’s revelation to the prophets was an extension of His law. The foundation of the Old Testament was the law given in the Pentateuch, which the prophets, psalmists, and other inspired writers preached, expounded and applied. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets.” There were thoughts and speculations among the religious leaders and the common people concerning the purpose of Christ’s coming. Did He come to destroy the law? Was His ministry to cancel the moral law and make the nation lawless and ungovernable? No. The moral law is God’s foundational standard for righteous living. Jesus fulfilled the moral law by His perfect righteousness and preached the necessity of repentance and righteousness. Did He come to destroy the judicial law, which was given to provide unique identity for Israel as a nation? No. He came to fulfil the law, to pay the penalty of the broken law for the whole nation and the whole world. Did He come to destroy the ceremonial law – the law of sacrifices? No. He came to fulfil the law by offering Himself as the final sacrifice, the perfect sacrifice. Having fulfilled the law of the sacrificial system, He brought all the other sacrifices to an end. Gains Of Faith – Part 1 By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi 08 November 2020 | 3:13 am  Our freedom, liberation, deliverance, fulfilment in life depends on what and who we know. Christ reveals that our knowledge of the truth will make us free. Ignorance of the truth is not good. For, if we do not know the truth, how can we be set free? Aside from not being good, lack of knowledge of the truth is a great problem, even to people of God. Children of God sometimes wonder how some peculiar challenges come to them. But the Scripture affirms that "my people are gone into captivity because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst." Our knowledge of the truth brings the experience of freedom and liberation. It is knowing, believing, embracing, internalising, and personalising the truth of God’s word that sets us free, keeps us free, and makes us also able to set other people free. "If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Spiritual freedom comes by getting connected to the Son of God. Everyone needs to come into His presence to be able to experience this freedom. Opportunity is always there for sinners to be connected and backsliders to be reconnected to the Saviour. The freedom the Lord grants is not partial but permanent. He sets us free from sin, sickness, and Satan to follow and become servants of righteousness. “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." As servants and students of righteousness, sin does not have dominion over us any longer. When the Son of God comes into our lives, He renews our mind, thoughts, and conscience, and makes us completely free from sin. He then becomes the Controller and Director of our lives. When there’s no more sin, the middle wall of partition that separates us from Him, we "become servants to God…." God, Who grants peace after justification is the same Who "shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly." The right place for evil powers, demons, and Satan for people who have made peace with God is “under [their] feet”. This will become a reality in your life as soon and as “shortly” as your faith can claim the promise. The Son grants true and complete freedom, not only from sin but also from satanic bondage. “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not, but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not." Christ, our Lord and Saviour set us free from seven-fold bondage. He grants us: (1) freedom from filthiness – God specialises in cleansing sinners from all filthiness of sin. Cleansed by God, the heart becomes free from all stubbornness and resistance to His Word; it becomes tender as He equally sanctifies and fills it with His Spirit. (2) Freedom from fear. Fear is a terrible emotion. Many times, what you fear, you attract to your life. Premonitions and terrifying dreams tend to become reality through fear. Satan uses fear in people to work against them as he did to Job. In the new covenant, it’s a new day, and fear is gone. (3) Freedom from the flesh. Some people are still involved with the works of the flesh and remain, voluntary slaves when God has declared universal freedom for all men. (4) Freedom from frustration. Hope deferred often brings frustration and depression, especially when there is a lack or loss of opportunities and means of livelihood or difficulty in finding a marriage partner. (5) Freedom from failure. Many people are battling with failure; they tell stories of ill-luck and inability to pass exams. With confession, conviction, correction, concentration, consecration, commendation, and conferment, there will be freedom from failure. (6) Freedom from falsehood. God sets free from false apostles, prophets, teachers, doctrine, as well as religion and ideology that despise Christ’s sacrifice. (7) Freedom from the fire. God sets us – family, property – free from the fire of the enemy. He also grants freedom from eternal fire through repentance, faith, and freedom in Christ. While genuine believers will go to heaven to walk on the streets of gold, those who reject Christ will burn in the eternal, unending fire. Gains Of Faith – Part 2 By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi 15 November 2020 | 4:00 am  Faith is practical. It is seen in the lives of those that exercise it. And its benefits are too obvious for all observers to see. The Scripture reveals some saints or children of God who had sustaining faith. God wants us to exercise faith in Him. Additionally, He wants us to be “followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” When we are set free, live and act by faith, God will grant us the fulfilment of His promises and blessings. Among the saints whose lives stand out as a beacon of faith, and from whom we are expected to learn vital lessons were Abraham, whose faith did not allow him to consider his ageing, dead and barren body, but believed God for the promised child. Barak's faith went with Deborah to battle without any consideration for gender because he believed God was with her. Caleb's faith did not consider the giants superior to His God, but believed that with Him on their side, they were well able to overcome. Daniel's faith triumphed over conspirators, who wanted him to become a secret disciple. He came out of the den of lions unhurt. Elijah was a man of authority, who locked and opened heaven against idolatrous Ahab and Israel. Fortunatus, though unfamiliar, by faith supported and made the apostle Paul glad. Gideon’s faith was neither in the size of the army nor in people, but in the almighty God, Who gave him victory in battle. Hezekiah’s faith cancelled premature death through prayer. Isaiah's faith claimed signs and wonders for him and his children. Joshua's faith was built on God’s word and promise that no man would be able to stand before him all the days of his life. King Jehoshaphat's faith considered the battle won; as such, he arranged his people to praise God. The Lepers' faith received miracles from the Lord, when He told them to go and show themselves to the priest. Moses' faith did not see Pharaoh as any obstacle to Israel's exodus, but was fixed on the invisible God. Noah's faith obeyed God's warning, prepared the Ark and escaped His judgment. Obadiah's faith made him to hide and feed servants of God during Ahab's sinful reign and also spoke about Elijah's departure by the Spirit of God. Paul, the apostle was able to perform miracles through his faith in God. Queen Esther's faith delivered the whole nation of Israel from being wiped out. Rahab's faith acted on her knowledge of God; she and her family were preserved. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego's faith affirmed that their God was able to deliver from persecutors and oppressors. Thessalonians' faith was a growing one; it grew to solve greater problems and cope with greater challenges. Unwavering faith does not doubt God's promises. Virgin Mary’s faith believed the good news from the Lord. Woman of Shunem’s faith believed and confessed, ‘it is well' though the child that came after many years of waiting was dead. Extraordinary faith of the Sirophenician woman did not give up, but persisted in spite of distractions and tests until she got the blessing. Yoke-breaking faith in the anointing from the Lord upon His servants sets free. Zerubabel's faith moved mountains; began and finished projects and accomplished dreams. The Lord wants us to study and follow the pattern, potential and possibilities of the sustaining faith of these saints. When we do so, the result of faith in their lives will be replicated in ours. How To Persevere In Trial – Part 1 By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi 22 November 2020 | 4:15 am  Crowns and thrones perish, kingdoms rise and wane, nations rise and fall, but God's Kingdom is from generation to generation, His dominion is everlasting. He reigns on high, and He rules uninterrupted in the affairs of men. Change in human government is inevitable, but believers continue to trust in God and live for His glory, whatever the circumstances around them may be. Change of government and administration, alteration in the economic conditions of nations and of the world will not affect the faith of God's children in His promises. The church of Jesus will remain, in conviction and commitment to God's Word. The Babylonian empire had fallen and the Medo-Persian Empire rose in its stead. Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans, was slain and Darius the Median took the kingdom. "And Daniel continued." Darius appointed an entirely new administration, but he still retained Daniel because of his excellent character, integrity, wisdom, self-renouncing devotion and experience. Daniel was now advanced in age – an old man approaching 90 years of age – but he was still active in service. As his days were, so was his strength. As he grew older, so he grew in faith, grew in knowledge, grew in wisdom, grew in leadership skill and ability, grew in courage and steadfastness, grew in spiritual insight and revelation, grew in usefulness to the Kingdom of God and the government of the empire. The thought of retiring to a life of ease and idleness was not given any consideration. Faithful and devoted to God, righteous and trustworthy before men, he was considered for greater responsibility by the new king. Envy led others to plot against his life, but he continued quietly in prayerful devotion to God. Neither the king's favour nor the frown of the presidents and the princes could change his conviction, consecration and commitment to his God. Men who aspire to ascend to positions of greater responsibility and usefulness must be willing to pay the price of purity, integrity, accountability and dependability in times of difficulty. It is always the highway of self-denial, the way of self-forgetfulness in service that leads to success and promotion. Those who intend to wear the crown must be willing to bear the cross. Daniel did not seek recognition or greatness. His only desire was to serve God and man and he saw promotion as another opportunity for doing good and a larger opening for greater usefulness. If we have such attitude as Daniel had, God will put us where we ought to be. Daniel did not reach this high position by any sudden spring. He moved up gradually through various levels of service and usefulness. His "excellent spirit" won for him extraordinary success, his truthfulness won trust, his faithfulness won favour, and his integrity won the interest of kings. "This Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes BECAUSE AN EXCELLENT SPIRIT WAS IN HIM; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm." Scripturally sound convictions, high and holy principles of living, integrity and transparent righteousness will not go unnoticed. The eyes of the King of heaven are on such people as Daniel to set them over soul-saving ministries, so that the Kingdom of God will "have no damage." Even earthly leaders seek such Daniels to occupy strategic positions, so that "the king should have no damage." An excellent spirit of genuine piety, a clear conscience in all actions relating to God and man, made Daniel a man of uncompromising integrity that he was. The spirit, not the flesh; godly behaviour, not goodly beauty, is the principal thing. Daniel's clarity of purpose, commitment to purity, constancy in prayer, courage during persecution and contentment without pretence set him apart as a unique man, whose only reason for living is seeking God’s glory. How To Persevere In Trial – Part 2 By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi 29 November 2020 | 3:00 am The power of God’s transforming grace revealed itself in the virtuous character of Daniel. “He was faithful.” His faithfulness attracted God’s favour and the king’s commendation. But this same faithfulness was construed as a crime by his envious colleagues. Envy will paint a saint as a sinner or regard the righteous as a rebel. Daniel was faithful to his God and faithful to the king. “Neither was there any error or fault found in him?” That was a great testimony to the uprightness of his character. “Concerning the kingdom” or “Concerning the law of his God” his life and actions were above reproach. Yet they “sought to find occasion against Daniel.” Why? The king was planning to promote him above the presidents. They sought to discredit him and destroy his character so that they would bring him to a state of disgrace and degradation. He who God favours, the world frowns at. The promotion of the righteous excites the envy of unrighteous men. Base and envious men always seek the ruin of good and righteous men. The observation of these most determined enemies of Daniel is the highest testimony to his godly character. “We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.” They conceived a plot through which they intended to destroy Daniel. They flattered the king and exalted him to the position of a god for thirty days. For a period of thirty days, all requests would be directed to the king. Daniel was not consulted about this decree, yet they said, “all the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes… have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree.” Flattery blinded the king’s eyes. Daniel was not there, but the king could not think clearly after hearing that he would be treated like a god for one month. There is a great deal of evil in the decree. If a child wanted bread, he could not ask the parents or he would be cast into the lions’ den! “Whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.” If anyone needed divine help, which could not be rendered by the king, he must not pray to God, otherwise, he would be cast into the den of lions. It was an unrighteous law, a satanic statute, a wicked ordinance and a despotic decree. Men in responsible positions should well consider the consequences of a proposed law or edict before they give their consent or assent to it. Daniel’s life of devotion was marked with conviction, consecration, communion, courage and consistency. King’s rise and fall, persecution arises or peace returns, the danger is imminent or deliverance is ascertained. The king thinks favourably toward him or the presidents are furious with him. Promotion in the king’s palace was awaiting him or violent death in the lions’ den was to be his portion. But his only viable choice was devotion to God, “as he did aforetime.” “When Daniel knew that the writing was signed”, he made no change in his habits of communion or worship on account of the decree. Daniel had a holy contempt for the unrighteous, God-dishonouring decree and he maintained his holy concern for God’s glory. He knew his God and his first and constant commitment was to honour and glorify Him, whatever the reaction of the world would be. Daniel’s action showed that he would not consent to the wicked decree. Neither because of fear nor desire to please man would he consent to anything contrary to God’s glory. When the honour of God is concerned, we ought not to conceal our Christian conviction, but boldly and faithfully act and live to please God, even at the hazard of our lives.
