hopefulLandlord:Thanks for this. I am a Christian. An educated one I believe, and I appreciate the continuous search for knowledge. I often wonder, If we as humans can build a modern civilisation driven by innovation, science and continuous improvement, why do we then choose to be dumb when it comes to understanding the teachings of Christ and the service of God? I’d like to address a lot of what you said, not sure typing will allow me enough space to share some of my perspectives. That said, I agree with a lot of your sentiments. The major problem is, most christians today(especially in Africa), do not understand the concept of God, the sacrifices of christ and what is expected of us. Our experience of him is largely influenced by doctrines and denominations. Doctrines and denominations are dangerous, as are often driven by greed, manipulations for financial gains and so on. So pastors use scare tactics, twist the bible for their own selfish gains. Gullible members run with it and so on. And once you refuse to be gullible, or ask questions they seem not to wriggle their way from, you are demonised and pronounced a candidate of hell. One thing I am certain of is this: Nobody, not even your pastors will get eternal life by virtue or their own works , because by default and nature, all of us are sinners. We sin daily, leaders and extremists only like to demonise other sinners to keep the agenda. To me, that’s why this Gospel based on the threat of hell is doing a disservice to the body of Christ. As Christians, the best template is that of Christ. All his friends and disciples sinned daily (Peter, Mathew, Judas, etc). He never was judging or threatening them. Jesus himself expressed weakness in human form (he almost chickened out at the cross). God knows this fact, and in his infinite mercy, wanted his son to be the sacrifice for all. So you are not going to “Heaven” because you sin less than others, you are going because you acknowledge there is a God who loves you no mater what, and he sent his son to die do you. Simple as! Every other thing is CAP. Once you start understanding this, you are motivated to build a relationship with him, and so on. Most of what is regurgitated today in the church is simply humans teaching God from their own very limited world view! Like I said, I don’t have all the answers, but I usually love critical assessments like this. We must keep asking questions! Shalom! |

Good morning sir, have u died to know how u will be judged. U claim to be knowledgeable but u know nothing. Read 1 cor.8:2, live a righteous life and accept Christ to avoid I didn't know this is what they said. [ quote author=hopefulLandlord post=92365978]Christians and their fear fuelled hell preaching again? Hell always sounded like a cynical marketing ploy designed to make people afraid to leave or displease the particular sect. And it seemed to really kill empathy - 'god says they burn, they burn' doesn't make me think of someone being full of love and compassion and all that. Eternal punishment for finite transgressions always seemed abusive to me. How can someone look at the idea of a being who would condemn people to that and call it love? Even when I was a Christian Hell was just too weird for me to accept. Infinite punishment for finite offenses is an eye for an eye on steroids. Punishing people for disobeying nit-picky rules makes God an abusive parent. One reason often given for punishment is to teach the offender not to offend again, but if punishment is eternal then how can the offender benefit from this teaching? Jesus is supposed to be into forgiveness but forgiveness shouldn't involve eternal suffering. Hell isn’t redemptive, it isn’t leading to repentance, it’s simply pain for pain’s sake. I love this quote: “Heaven and hell seem out of proportion to me: the actions of men do not deserve so much.” and of course I get the rationalisation of hell by Christians saying its moral accountability and saying bad people go to hell; that's nonsense and they know it!!! If Yahweh is real and omniscient, that means he already decided that we're going to hell before he even created us. But if this omniscient deity allows for deathbed conversions, then it doesn't matter what kind of life you lead. You could be a brutal dictator who massacred tens of millions of people, yet still get into heaven if you tell Jesus you're sorry. Your victims could all go to hell for eternity if they never repented. That's how bleeped up Christian morality is. Maybe Christians can answer a few questions for me. The Bible says that there is ONLY ONE way to get into Heaven: by accepting salvation through Jesus. So it follows that the Christians who ran the Nazi death camps can get into heaven. But their 6 million Jewish victims must burn for all eternity in the pits of Hell. I've talked to many Christians about this and they just pretty much accept it. My questions are: 1. How f***ed up do you have to be to believe Nazis can go to Heaven but their 6 million Jewish victims must burn? That's just sick. But Christians believe it. What the f*** is wrong with you people? 2. Why would ANYONE willingly worship a god that would act like that? Is it just a fear thing (better known as cowardice)? And 3. Even if you get into Heaven what makes you think you'll be safe with a psycho god like that running the place? What's to stop your god getting a wild hair up his ass one day and sending Christians to a place so bad it makes Hell look like an ice cream parlor? He used to like the Jews too. Or so the story claims. What makes you think you're safe?[/quote] |

Righteousness89:The Bible says that Jesus denied he is God Jesus spoke to a man who had called him ‘good,’ asking him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.’ (Luke 18:19) And he said to him, ‘Why are you asking me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ (Matthew 19:17) Jesus did not teach people that he was God If Jesus had been telling people that he was God, he would have complimented the man. Instead, Jesus rebuked him, denying he was good, that is, Jesus denied he was God. |

Righteousness89:The Bible says that God is greater than Jesus ‘My Father is greater than I’ (John 14:28) ‘My father is greater than all.’ (John 10:29) Jesus can not be God if God is greater than him. The Christian belief that the Father and son are equal is in direct contrast to the clear words from Jesus. Jesus never instructed his disciples to worship him ‘When you pray, say Our Father which art in heaven.’ (Luke 11:2) ‘In that day, you shall ask me nothing. Whatsoever you ask of the Father in my name.’ (John 16:23) |

Righteousness89:If Jesus was God, he would have sought worship for himself Since he didn’t, instead he sought worship for God in the heavens, therefore, he was not God. Jesus worshipped the only true God ‘that they might know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.’ (John 17:3) ‘he continued all night in prayer to God.’ (Luke 6:12) ‘Just as the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve’ (Matthew 20:28) How did Jesus pray to God? ‘he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father’ (Matthew 26:39) ‘During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.’ (Hebrews 5:7) Who was Jesus praying to when he fell on his face? Was Jesus crying in tears to himself pleading to be saved from death? No man, sane or insane, prays to himself! Surely the answer must be a resounding ‘No.’ Jesus was praying to ‘the only true God.’ Jesus was the servant of the One Who sent him. Can there be a clearer proof that Jesus was not God? |

Righteousness89:The Bible says that Jesus was God’s servant ‘Behold, My servant, whom I have chosen, in whom My soul is well pleased.’ (Matt 12:18) Since Jesus is God’s servant, Jesus can not be God. The Bible says that Jesus could not do anything by himself ‘The son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing.’ (John 5:19) ‘I can of mine own self do nothing.’ (John 5:30) The Bible says that Jesus did not consider himself equal with God and that God performed miracles through Jesus & Jesus was limited in what he could do: ‘But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.’ (Matt. 9: ![]() ‘a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst.’ (Acts 2:22) ‘he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.’ (Acts 10:38) If Christ was God, the Bible would simply say that Jesus did the miracles himself without making reference to God. The fact that it was God supplying the power for the miracles shows that God is greater than Jesus. Also, Jesus was limited in performing miracles One time when Jesus tried to heal a blind man, the man was not healed after the first attempt, and Jesus had to try a second time (Mark 8:22-26). Once a woman was healed of her incurable bleeding. The woman came up behind him and touched his cloak, and she was immediately healed. But Jesus had no idea who touched him: ‘At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ (Mark 5:30) ‘He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.’ (Mark 6:5) Quite obviously, someone with such limitations can not be God. The power of miracles was not within Jesus. |
