Fact that you are coming back to mother earth with abundant life gives joy and hope, to me its less risky than flying to space with no atom of life. You can imagine when you are on board plane.. Taking off and landing which of them is sweeter though both are controlled.

Hey, academic research isn't meant to directly solve societal problems. It's meant to only explore, discover and explain new things or old things in a different way.

You aren't very educated sadly. The bible doesn't teach a flat earth theory. In fact it talks of the circle of the earth somewhere in Job.
Whats more? Almost every other observable big and stable masses in the universe are sphere; from the stars (sun inclusive) to the planets and their moons/satellites. So you should logically expect the earth which is also a planet to be sphere. There are other simple ways that we where taught in secondary school that we can use to proof that the is spherical.

America spends a about 0.5% of its budget which is about $20.7 billion on space exploration and in turn it create jobs since most of the work is done on Earth. It is also seen as a new industry.

Defense is also factor, they're trying to predict the movement of asteroids and study planetary alignments for education.

Space travel is seen as the next big thing, the idea to colonize Mars and be a multi planetary specie, these were the same ideas that inspired Elon Musk. A lot of "experts" think we're on a ticking time bomb due to climate change and the environment.

America's ego, since the "Moon landing" and the Cold War. America's has been viewed as the top nation in terms of new age tech even though the Russians and East Asians aren't far behind or could even be better. The government would like the public to think they're still the best and that includes furthering the work of NASA.
