I will say this one more time

Working in a bank does not make you a banker; it makes you a bank worker!

Forget all that tie and suit oooo...when you enter inside bulk room or look at them behind the cash desk, they have taken off the heels and are wearing slippers with their food flask beside them. In the bulk room, they commot tie and suit and their shoes o..

When they close, they dress up again and drive their cars financed from upfront and dazzle you. All fake

Anyhow...Bank worker and Banker is like calling a wall gecko a crocodile

I'd never forget what one of my mentor @ronaldnzimora said.

He said,
Every young person in their twenties...
building a digital business right now...
are years ahead of their peers.

I believe it, and I think every young person should take that advice serious.

Happy Sunday.. Stay Blessed

Hi all, moderator pls help me push to fp. I need good advise like badly.

I joined the banking system about a decade ago. Young and naive. I got carried away by thier flashy suits and top tech phones.
The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one.

This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications.

Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway,
I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad.

I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc.

Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field.

I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area.

Niaralanders, pls help a brother

And...you want to chase after oil majors after the lessons learnt 'squandering' life playing monopoly, when crude oil is failing, worth less than vegetable oil...hmm.

Why not get something you can do for life, simething tou can continue doing with a passion 'leaning on a walking stick' and to which your kids and their kids can continue in without a want for direction and motivation.

@Op, I can say banking job is not a total waste of time .
It was a waste of time to you becox it was not your career path. Like a graduate of accounting, banking & finance etc can never be a waste of time & resources to them.
It's good you realize it on time, I pray to God for total career recovery for you.
No knowledge is wasted .
Bros @40, time nor dey again
If you have enough capital, just go into business or trade., At this time you wouldn't want to settle for a graduate trainee job in your own carrier job.

What if the business collapses?

Data Analytics is a good way to start.
As for businesses, add honey selling to your list, if interested. Thank me later.
Caveat: These businesses or skills will not make you "blow" immediately, but you'll have your needs met if you are proficient in them. Peace.

Look at the image below, it's the reality in many (not all) sectors. Let no one lie to you.

Even in the so called high paying jobs, not many people deploy the high-end technical skills. Majority get paid doing the very basic stuff like calculating salaries with a spreadsheet, counting money, taking records and attendance, or fixing broken pipes with a M.Sc degree. Your employer won't tell you to solve Dy-Dx.

Before you abandon your banking job, you need to think again.

Congratulations on being courageous to release yourself from the golden handcuff.

You can take courses on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Affiliate marketing.

You can learn copywriting in order to write your own sales pages but don't invest in making a career from copywriting. I'd suggest you delve into the emerging tech fields in order to be strategically positioned in this 4th technological revolution.

OP take this advise. Data Science is the thing now. if you want to go deep in you Construction Maangement, still relate it to AI and data science.

Your post is misleading . You spent 10 years as a cashier . I don’t know anyone who spent The last 10 years in the technology division (software ) of a bank that did not exit with a bag of knowledge. Many of them move to fintechs in Nigeria , the test of Africa and beyond. Cashier position can be done by a high school leaver and I wonder what kept you there for 10 years

A teller is not a “banker”, tellers are most times contract staff, they don’t know anything more than posting/receiving cash, sorting cash or anything cash- something interns can do. So, it is only normal they feel extremely used after years of counting cash they may not own. Nobody is going to employ you after years just because you can count cash and identify fake notes on sight.

i still dont understand how someone will spend all his life counting cash for 10 years...doing something repetitive without moving forward through the ranks.

Anyway..banking job all over the world is not a place to get rich except you work for an investment bank that deals with HNI

Listen to Megastarr. Not sure about the affiliate marketing - that's a behaviourally specific fit. But Big data, AI and exponential tech will help you redeem the time. If you have a small contact list of people you've helped while in the bank give them a call and tell them you are out without asking for anything ( important)

You will be fine. Five years more and it would have been even more difficult. You will be fine.

Didn't you even see the one that said 'time no dey again' for OP. smh. This is the kind of people that quickly give up before they start anything in their lives.

Op, there is only obstacle that may come to your way and that is 'you'. If you believe to achieve anything in life and work tenaciously toward it, you will surely attain it.
