It's an illusion that Nigerians don't pay tax.

Go and buy jollof rice at Chicken Republic and check the receipt they print out for you.

You'll see VAT = Value Added Tax.

Nigerians pay tax on almost everything they buy.

Not to talk of those who work in the civil service, teachers, doctors etc who do PAYE Pay As You Earn, where your tax is deducted from source.

I'm also sure private companies also pay taxes.

Besides, what makes you think that your politicians won't steal your taxes?

Same politicians that were ready to increase the taxes once they saw that oil money wasn't coming in again.

You are very funny.

They'll rob you blind of your taxes and even flaunt it right in your presence and you'll do absolutely NOTHING.

You know why?

The people that will attack you for attacking the politicians are your fellow suffering masses.
Abohboy we already pay taxes.. Looks like you don't pay tax yourself undecided

Hi
AristocraticMe:
I will try and explain something to you.

VAT is tax but it is not a Direct Tax......... The regular tax is being paid base on your income.. not on your purchase.... so VAT is not TAX.... Tax is the PAYE your mentioned.

When you buy Garri do you pay tax ? No
When you buy bread do you pay tax ? No

Does the woman that own the beauty shop in your area pay tax ? No
Do you pay tax when you visit a barbing salon ? No

So you see.... all this people should pay tax at the end of the year declaring their income and the government tax them base on their income... and they pay...

Simple.
Stop saying nonsense ..VAT is TAX ..VAT is type of tax and personal income tax is also another type of tax .. infact VAT is a more powerful tax than personal income tax can ever be

I'm not a Constitutional lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that paying of tax exempts some low wage earners.

We prolly would need a Constitutional lawyer to help us out with that.

If your monthly take home pay is less N10,000 would you be expected to pay tax?

Those hawking gala in traffic, are they also expected to pay tax?

By the way, see these two statements by you:

VAT is tax but it is not a Direct Tax
so VAT is not TAX
What do you want me to make of them...? undecided

The raw rice and other imported foodstuffs that you buy in the market already carry their own additional import duty.

This is shifted on the end buyer who buys for consumption.

Nigerians pay Tax.

Let me say that again, Nigerians are taxed.

Include the other little deductions that Banks make on behalf of the CBN on your accounts and you'll realize that Nigerians pay way too much to the government without a corresponding return.

Let's assume that you are correct and 60-70% of Nigerians don't pay tax at all.

What have the politicians done with the tax paid by the remaining 30-40% of taxpayers?

What have we done to the politicians?

I will try and explain some issue to us who dont understand what i am saying.

In the state i live, i reside in America .......... we were recently told they will increase tax by 3% because they want to buy more school buses and improve the learning environment..... the case in court.... most people say NO and they took the government to court....

Lets now assume the court approved and give the government go ahead...... Can a Local Government Chairman now have the order-city to say he bought one bus for $500,000 dollars ? he will be fired on the spot because that is misappropriation of funds ........ you see were i am driving at huh.

I will try and make this very short..... This is an open discussion though.

The reason Nigerians are complacent about the situation of Nigeria is because 60-70% of Nigerians dont pay tax. Why ? Most Nigerians are business people, the higher percentage are the small scale businesses...... How many of them pay tax.... NONE......

If you pay tax and you know that it is your money (tax) a person is embezzling without regards, no body will tell you to protest and revolt. They wont even try it.

That is one thing the developed nation did that we failed to do. We failed to create a system where by everybody contribute to the growth of the country. By so doing you will naturally hold any leader responsible.... You know how hard you work for your money then the government takes some percentage as tax on automatically and then one person embezzles it........ No body will tell you to stand for your right and no leader will try it.

Nigerian just keep shouting OUR MONEY ( What they mean is Oil Money or Money coming from Natural Resources) not money coming from your pocket........ If it is coming from pocket (Income) then the way Nigerian leaders siphon money wont happen like that. They will be scared to do that because they know people will hold them accountable for it.

Most Nigerians are in one social club or the other were we pay monthly dues..... during the end of the year party, the leader should come out and say they bought a crate of soft drink for N10,000 ...... Can they say that ? No..... they know people will revolt and it will cause problem...... Why ? because everybody has a stake in the club's money (it is our money) so naturally corruption will reduce .....

Secondly, people will naturally want to know how the money is spent and make sure it make sense or else the leader of the social club have some explaining to do........

Corruption cannot be eradicated but it can be reduced..

That is why corruption in Developed Nations is not as it is in Africa. Remember there is corruption everywhere but not as bad as Africa or Nigeria

In Nigeria a Leader came out and said her ministry feed children who are out of school with hundreds of million - How ?
In Lagos a Leader said a corona virus patient care cost is 1 Million per day and so on...

No wonder a British Prime Minister once said Nigeria is Stupendiously corrupt.......
this write up is foolish & valueless

so those small businesses who pay business premises, local govt and eswama aren't taxes right ?

you talk of other nations but fail to point out the roles some of their leaders played to motivate their citizens to pay tax and hold them accountable

just don't know the bird that pooped on your thought to write this
Re: Nigeria Will Not Change Until Everyone Starts To Pay Tax by Tianamen1: 11:09pm On Aug 04, 2020
Aristocraticme is 100 percent correct. most of us do not even understand democracy. you elect leaders to spend your collective resources on projects for economies of scale.

Take power generation as an example, it is much more expensive for Nigerians to run their generator sets than it is for those same people to contribute to build a massive power plant. our leaders know that Nigerians would hold them to account so they hardly tax anyone.

Aristo..., resource rich states like Texas, South Dakota and Alaska do not pay income taxes. rather, they pay higher than normal property taxes and sales taxes. i think this is because resource rich states usually have larger than normal income inequality(like Nigeria). it may be more effective to tax peoples houses, cars and phones than to tax their incomes in Nigeria. even farmers in villages can pay 2000 Naira annually as taxes. this would let them understand that they own the government rather than been ruled by our "leaders".

to qualify Aristos... comment, a majority share of our budget must come from taxation as opposed to natural resources for Nigeria to develop.

You will never see what I am seeing.... those are not taxes they are levy or you can call it dues or whatever.

The government does not motivate you to pay tax, they take it whether you like it or not that is why you will be forced automatically to hold them accountable for how they spend your money....and the spending pattern must make sense.

Nobody will tell you , you will be the one to walk to your local government chairman's office and ask him developmental questions and he or she has no choice than to listen and answer...

Like I said you might not understand... but its okay....

Nigerian leaders know this...

The wisest counsel to heal Nigeria's problems.
Our founding fathers were poor students of sociology and psychology, that's why working for government in Nigeria means an opportunity to rob the system (yourself included ) dry.
Whether we pay formal taxes or through VAT, corruptions, ineptitude, embezzlement, etc is a not even the case, the case is that Nigerians, every adult is not taxed in a way for them to take ownership of their own country. Unfortunately, we discovered oil, or what the Venezuelans call devil's grease of corruption, and every thing went from bad to worse.

A fair taxing system will reduce and probably eliminate corruption, because if that 1 billion naira you're going to embezzle came directly off the pockets of your home people who would eagerly waiting for you with sharp objects when you come home to display your ill gotten wealth. But when steal the amount from Abuja oil money and run home to your village, instead of them asking you, "my son, how did you make this money" they fall for the old notion that government is national cake deserving to looted, and that you have indeed gotten their own share. On the contrary, imagine stealing #10,000 contributed by your poor folks at home at #100 a person!

Another benefit of measured taxation is that it will once and for all solve the problem of proper census , and this probably why it will never happen at least under the present dispensation. If every adult in a village pay #1 tax a year, it will automatically help with census estimation and planning.

A formal tax will also reduce the need for many underground levies currently in place of which the corrupt government is going to fail to give a full account of.

Abohboy:
That’s not the tax he is talking about, in the U.K they have income tax where a specific percentage of all the money you make go to the government, they also have council tax, where a fixed rate is taken from everyone living in thst council and they use that money to build houses roads, schools, hospitals etc, in the U.K they have all of that and more, only 10 million Nigerians pay income tax. Which creates 27 billion dollars for Nigeria if 100 million Nigerians paid tax than Nigeria s budget would by 270-310 billion dollars, but we don’t that’s why Egypt and South Africa have higher budgets than us because their citizens pay income tax more than Nigerians do. And his point is when your money is being stolen by politicians then you will have a Problem, for now it is just the revenue made from resources in the country. So you don’t really care about it.
we have more people working in informal sector here in Nigeria compared to UK. How do you expect government to tax them directly? most people that own shops pay tax to lga.transporters pay tax. market women pay tax. it is very difficult to tax people bustling daily. how would tax mama favour frying boli? gvernment is taxing them through agents or their associations. some people even experience what is called double or triple taxation. ask people doing business in Lagos. living in Nigeria is hell?
why do u think life expectancy is low ? poor healthcare ? no. if living conditions improve, life expectancy will increase to some extent.

taxes being collected in Nigeria are being looted or diverted. corruption and impunity are bane of tax collection in Nigeria. what about fines for offences? most offenders would prefer to bribe than paying fines. why? if fine is too exorbitant and does not match economic reality, offenders will bribe. government makes laws without taking into consideration psychosocial behaviours of people.

Even if all the citizens pay double tax for 10years, Nigeria will not change. Contract if N10m will be awarded for 700m yet it will not be done.

Billions of naira will be spent from taxpayers money to bribe and rig elections every 4years.

Monies for developmental projects will be laundered abroad. The little projects done will also be substandard.

Only projects that will fetch politicians money will be embacked upon and not projects that will benefit the masses. E.g 27billion naira to renovate National Assembly another 60billion to fence University of Maiduguri.

One of the main purpose of tax payments in developed countries is not only for developmental projects but also to redistribute income. Do you know how much the lower income bracket gets from government every month? The list are endless. There is child tax benefits, Old age pension, AISH, Disability benefits, Social welfare, Unemployment Income also known as EI, GST, HST and many more. A larger percentage of the population gets as high as N300,000 to N500,000 every MONTH (Using Canada as an example.

There are two categories of tax payments here. After your employer deduct your tax at source and remit to the government. You are still expected to file tax on preceeding year basis. Your employer will give you a form called T4 showing all the income and taxes you paid the previous year. With T4 form, you will file your tax every year between February and April 30. Your family net income will determine if you will get tax refund or you pay government extra money as tax despite all the previous deductions from your employer.

Nigeria has a fundamental problem, the problem is not just about the government stealing funds. Is about everyone. There is no system and we have some cultures, values and beliefs that will deter progress.

Our way of life of showing off your success is not done abroad. People live a quiet and reserved life. The more you earn the more tax u pay. Some people pay as high as 43% as tax

What you failed to realized is that we are paying heavy tax indirectly but getting zero value for it.

You buy fuel, you pay tax

You refill your gas cylinder, you pay tax

You recharge you phone line, you pay tax

You make calls with your phone, you pay tax

You recharge your cable TV, you pay tax

You buy vehicles, you pay tax

You buy generating set, you pay tax

You buy engine oil, you pay tax

There's tax in clothes, shoes, caps you put on

50naira stamp duty charge on every transaction of 10k & above is huge tax, some of us lose 2k & above daily on stamp duty

Mind you, where I lives we pay both local vigilante & policemen every month for security, we provide portable water for ourselves! My 2 offices, I paid monthly levy for security to local vigilante guarding the place

During the lockdown, government gave Nigerians nothing even a day freebies of power supply is difficult for them to do
