The United States Embassy in Nigeria, Friday, expressed concern over allegations of interference by security forces in political matters ahead of the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo States.

The embassy also stressed that it is disappointed with the role played by some political actors in Edo state adding that it is worried about the deteriorating political climate of the state.

In a statement via its twitter handle @USinNigeria with the caption, “U.S. Embassy Statement on 2020 Off-Cycle Elections in Edo and Ondo States,” it stated that the US being a long-time friend of Nigeria, “it will continue to follow political developments ahead of off-cycle elections in the country.”

The statement reads: “The United States supports a democratic process where the will of the Nigerian people is reflected in the results, and does not favour any party or candidate.

“We are concerned with reports of the deteriorating political climate in Edo State and are disappointed with the role played by some political actors in the state. We are especially concerned with allegations of interference by security forces in political matters, which we will continue to monitor closely in the run-up to gubernatorial elections in the state in September.

“As we approach the 2020 off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo, we urge all stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful process. We encourage all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security services, to continue to improve the electoral process.

“We look to Nigeria as an important leader on the African continent. As a democratic partner of Nigeria, the United States remains committed to working together to achieve our mutual goals of peace and prosperity for the citizens of both our countries.”

Everybody should be disappointed at Oshiomole rascality just few weeks to the election day.

This is just charging the atmosphere. I do not pray the killings that followed Rivers election plays out in Edo state.

APC really need to prove to Nigerians that they are different from PDP at least in the area of peaceful election. We know they have failed woefully like PDP in all areas of governance.

Oshiomole is really a bad product of democracy with his do or die way of politics. And to think this is a man who once had my sympathy during his political fight with Tony Anenih is just so disappointing.

Elections in Nigeria have always witnessed same due to the ambition of office seekers, Edo state precisely witnesses heightened uproar during governorship election from 1999 till date.

there are political actors in the US who also dictate the tune of the election from behind the scene.

The disappointment of the US embassy should be channeled towards implementing and improving democratic norms.

A state governor has turned dictatorial by failing to inaugurate elected legislators and impeaching those who dare belong to another political party upon their defection. He also informed all political appointees to leave the scene if they don't play to his whims.

This has been debunked severally. They are working towards a peaceful Edo state post and pre-election by safeguarding the mandate of democratically elected state legislators.

None of the parties have complained of harassment by the security forces, what are the allegations?

Painfully many will not listen to this golden advise of yours. I pray nobody gets permanently deformed or killed due to political violence been orchestrated by two former friends. It is going to be more painful when after the election they someday see Adams and Godwin dancing and partying together why some are now deformed or not even lucky to witness their reunion.
