I sympathize with drivers but weep for those who invested a significant portion of their savings to purchase vehicles with the hope of starting a profitable business.

The business climate in Nigeria is unfriendly and uncertain, you can wake up tomorrow and discover you just lost everything.

I am an advocate of doing business online especially those that will not involve Nigeria regulations ..

For those currently enjoying the dollars while living in Nigeria, I am happy for you.

Nigeria government.... shame on you !!!

I don't get this, with the avalanche of unemployment we have and the thousands of job losses caused by the pandemic, the crazy government is hell-bent on making things harder. This is how these governments will send Uber/Bolt away the same way they killed opay and gokada. Doing business in this country is an extreme sport. Yet the youth are more focused on more important BBnaija.

The problem is that these hailing companies say they are not employers of the drivers and the drivers work independently hence they can't pay operational taxes.

The same BS that has been happening in London and New York.

exactly....that's why they keep having problems around the world

No long story.
The money for the bullion vans to Bourdillon needs to increase for the 2023 campaign.
Lagosians, being the beasts of burden that they have been since 1999 for Ogbeni Ojuyobo, will swallow the bullshit as usual.
Life goes on, even with increasing suffering that is hidden by ogboju smiles.

Are there many similarities in the operating environment in Lagos on one hand, and in New York and London on the other?
In terms of roads, street signs, economic power of riders etc?

The government knows that it will fall on the masses in various ways.
The government also knows that the masses won’t do jack, so why not squeeze them more?

Lagos is becoming too difficult to live-in at the rate the government is going, hope they don't crash the economy by the time people start leaving the state.

Someone said the amount he spends on danfo bus fares from egbeda to Lekki or even egbeda to Surulere in a day, can sponsor a trip for a week in other states, like Ibadan, Kano(even keke drop)

The issues stand on that a lot of these payments should be paid by the company and not the driver. A lot of these taxes are already being paid by the yellow taxes conveniently and the buses because they are individuals.

If you go through the article, you will find out that the parent companies have refused to attend any more meetings, why? They will convininetly put the drivers out and say the drivers should pay the levies as they are not employees of their company which is just BS.

They do this in every country and these causes large issues with everyone

Talking from experience as a fleet manager:

This is absolute madness, you could have just told new entrants not to even think venturing into the business..this may obviously not be a problem for uber and bolt, but if this eventually has a ripple effect on the drivers via increase of service commission, they can kiss their ass goodbye from Nigerian fleet managers whom are the power house of the ride-hailing companies, of which many are pulling out in droves today..

- Total purchase of a (non-rusted) regular corolla including registrations and starter pack/kit - 2m
- Average income /week (full time) - N100,000
- minimum Fueling/week - N30,000
- Commission remittance (currently) - N25,000
- average e-hail coy commission - 25% - N25,000

- Fleet managers take home/week - (N25,000)..
Monthly sum - (N100,000)

inevitable expense projections:
Service - (N8,000 monthly)
- Monthly tire change projection (used) (N7,000)
- Monthly repairs projection (dollar rise in parts) - (15,000)
- Fines/levies/impound/tolls provision - (5,000)
- Driver short pays and run-aways - (5,000)
- Logistics, tracking & follow ups - (5,000)
- Monthly Comprehensive insurance - (7,000)

Average monthly income after deductions - N50,000

Vehicle replacement - 2m/N50,000 = 40mths (4 years approx with all things being equal) which is almost impossible for a car virtually 18hrs on the road.. it may encounter major accidents, engine change, gear box change, AC issues during the period which does not just cut down massively on the income, but increases the capital recovery period of the vehicle aswell beyond the 40mths..

With this projections alongside increase in dollar /fuel which directly affects repair cost, reduces return, coupled with the shrinking economy that reduces riders, who in his right senses would remain in such business if a service charge is increased..

Hmmm.
Detailed explanation.
The government is just bent on killing businesses. They should be thinking of waivers, not over-taxing citizens and businesses.
They are motivated by the loot they will carry at the end of the day

Uber is currently a loss making company. They will pull out. Its that simple. They not making a lot of money from 9ja sef. This is what you get when simps who do not understand a particular value chain make stupid laws. And for all of you talking yada yada, uber and bolt are correct. People do private hires all the time. Abeg emeka come and drop me at the airport, you get someone to drive your car to take your somewhere and u pay the person. The app just lets you connect to more people for this kind of stuff and make some more money. If you have your personal connect, same thing. Government already gets taxes from vehicle registration, license renewals, tolls e.t.c. people are taken off the job market and also mechanics and part sellers have jobs. People are able to drop their cars and get to wherever in comfort. So less cars on the road. Ban them and see a proliferation of cars and more people buy more cars so they can drive in comfort. Are they expecting lagosians to go back to their trashy dirty, hot yellow cabs? Not gonna happen. People seldom downgrade. With the forex issues we have which will also reduce their income, trust me these guys would bail. The most they can do is charge Hackney permits and then maybe vat. But nothing else.

Other countries? Where there is 24 hour light; Near instant response by Police in case of violent crime; stable price of products; GOOD ROADS; 24 hours emergency hospital and ambulance;
Or which countries?
