The Most Cosmopolitan States In Nigeria - My Opinion by Afam4eva(m): 10:55pm On Aug 11, 2020
There's a thread on the most cosmopolitan states in Nigeria here but like a lot of opinionated threads, it is riddled with misinformation which comes from a place of ignorance and half baked education. I saw IBADAN in the list even though the list what for states instead of cities and it made me wonder what sort of education some Nigerians have.

I also had a problem with the fact that there was no criteria for the ranking. Are we using ethnic groups, religion, non indegenes ? It has to be clearly stated.

That's why i've decided to make my list of the most cosmopolitan states in Nigeria including ABUJA and my criteria is majorly the ethnic distribution of the states and i will be listing them from the most cosmopolitan.

1. LAGOS: This is Nigeria's former capital city and economic capital. Thousands of people make it to Lagos from all over the country on a daily basis. It is a state where you can hear just about any language in the streets, from Yoruba to pidgin English to Igbo and Hausa. Atleast 50% of the population of Lagos are non Yorubas.

2. ABUJA: This is Nigeria's capital territory and nowhere in Nigeria has a more nationalistic feel than this city. The fact that it is home to a lot of government ministries and parastatals means that you will see people from different ethnic groups in the city. It is not called the center of Unity for nothing.

3. Rivers State: This state is the most cosmopolitan state in southern apart from Lagos. It is mostly populated by people from ethnic groups in the south, particular people from states closer to it. That is why you find Ijaws, Igbos, Ikwerres, Ibibios and people from a lot of minority groups in the south. You also have a large Hausa and Yoruba population in the state.

4. Delta State: This state by providence is already cosmopolitan because the state is home to ethnic groups ranging from the Urhobos, Isokos, Itsekiris, Ijaws and the Igbos that are native to the states. You also have a large influx of Igbos from the neigbouring state of Anambra to the capital city of Asaba. it is also home to Edos, Hausas, Yorubas and people from other ethhnic groups.

5. OGUN: Despite being a majority Yoruba state, owing to it's closeness to Lagos state, Ogun has distinguished itself as one of the most cosmopolitaan states as you have people fro all over the country calling the state home especially in places close to Lagos.

6. KADUNA: This state is a special place in Nigeria because it is home to a lot of government agencies which means that it will attract people from all over the country. There's a huge population of Igbo, Yoruba and people from Northern ethnic groups.

7. EDO: The capital of Edo state, Benin used to be the capital of the old Bendel state and as such is home to people from areas that made up the state. That's why you would find Urhobos, Isokos, Ijaws, Itsekiri and Delta Igbos in the capital of the state either doing business of attending the prestigious university of Benin.

Objective list, but you didn’t add Enugu state. You have people from Benue, Ogoja, Hausa, Deltans, Yoruba in the State.

The following states should be in that list.

1. Enugu
2. Kano
3. Oyo
4. Anambra
5. Plateau

I'm from Enugu. Enugu is atleast 90% Igbo if anything. The non-Igbo minority are silent.

Trash....i had to bold that nonsense and strike it off because it doesn't in anyway explain the rationale behind such influx and as such your list is totally not objective.......

secondly even plateau, taraba and other northern states have over 7 ethnicities witthin them which nullifies whatever criteria behind your analysis.

Are you sure about that claim? This is because Edo is in the same category as Enugu. Most of the non-indigenes in Benin were ones in old Bendel state. So you cannot categorize people who lived in old bendel as metropolitan.

For starters, Edo indegenes do not all speak the same language. Apart from Bini and Esan that are related, some other parts speak different languages. You also have people from non-edo tribes living in the city more than you would have in Enugu.

You’re not really getting me. How many people from the middlebelt live in Edo state? How many people from other south-south state bar Deltans live in Edo state? If you list Urhobo, Isoko people who ones shared same state in old bendel, then nothing stops states like Enugu, Plateau etc to be added to that list. Afteralll non-indigenes from Ogoja, Kogi and other Igbo states live in Enugu.

Yes, Plateau and Taraba have a lot of ethnic group but there's always a sense of unison in terms of the Hausanization of most parts of the north. Besides, apart from Jos in Plateau to some extent, you don't have a huge influx of people from very far away places in the south in these places

Are you also implying that there are no Anambra people moving to Asaba? There are also Asaba people moving to Anambra but because Asaba people are also Igbos, there was no point pointing it out.

Secondly from my understsnnding of cosmopolitan“ including people from many different countries.
"immigration transformed the city into a cosmopolitan metropolis"”

then how would you explain an itshekiri or a bini man in his own land or state makes it cosmopolitan.

the itshekiri, urhobos are inn their homeland and not joined by any, so how is someone in his own state makes it look cosmopolitan

I think you should use another term than misusing that word.

You are also not understanding my point. I'm not saying Edo is the most cosmopolitan place in NIgeria. But it's more cosmopolitan than Enugu because the percentage of non edo people in Edo state is more than the percentage of non Igbo people in Enugu. You can go to Benin and point to a random person and that person's name could be "Chukwudi" but do the same thing in Enugu and that person would most likely be another Chukwudi.

My point is Enugu is hugely an Igbo city and while there are non indigenes from states such as Benue, Kogi and Cross River as i have some of them living in y village of Amechi Uwani in Enugu, they are not that noticeable until you look very well.

I understand that there are different criteria for a place to be considered cosmopolitan, that's why i narrowed mine down to ethnicity in other not to cause confusion. Besides, -the expatriate population in Nigeria is very low, so it's negligible.

what sort of analysis is that..

how can you narrow the meaning of cosmopolitan to ethno-cosmopolitan?

you totally deviated from the meaning of the word.

Ethnicity shouldn't be a criteria especially to aa state indigenous to same people you are analysing.

you went off tangent.

That's actually a sh1t definition, no offence to whatever dictionary that is. Cosmopolitan simply means diverse, it doesn't have to be specific to people from different countries alone. I clearly stated what my own criteria is. You don't have to agree with it but it's what it is.

The guy clearly a mumu. Simple words he doesn't understand. He thinks the word cosmopolitan is subjective like the word best. What makes a city or state cosmopolitan cant be people of the same nationality all residing there. Even when knowledge is free but the clown wants to be an ignoramus.

You're the one who has comprehension deficiency because you either do not read or find it hard absorbing information else you would see where i stated MY OWN CRITERIA. I had to write it in bold this time, so you wouldn't miss it.

There is no basis to justify your drift, go and re-write that thing.

if someone indigenous to a state makes it cosmopolitan then no need for others to join as the meaning of the word has been rendered useless.
