I went through a post of a person on nairaland introducing himself to potential clients and looking at his skillset I was tempted to ask him Are these platforms you've tried or platforms you know? - because they were basically the whole visual studio workload.

When I'm looking at too many platforms, I improve slower due to lack of focus.
It's not easy for developers who haven't settled in a software development niche. The person mentioned Web dev, Mobile dev, Desktop applications each with about 5 technologies under.... It must have been hard for such a person looking for direction.

This is what Nigerian devs suffer, due to difficulties getting jobs, we end up as Jack of all trades, Master of none. We scratch the surface of a language or framework and run off to the next one just to remain employable. Some of us even have different resumes for each niche.
But how well does it workout. We are forced to ignore the theory of the language or platform and focus on doing a project no matter how simple. Then we go on to fail in the theoretical interview.
I wonder how many JavaScript devs can tackle those strange interviews.

Everyone wants to learn one and master it but the question is Which one.

I wish those successful in this field share their experience with those who are still confused.

True talk... I was desperate to learn new language after school, I wasn't interested in JavaScript because its syntex looks like spider web ( jaga jaga) so I went into php, after some months i find it too easy but never knew how powerful it was, I left php to learn laravel after my elder brother introduce me to it, I love the fine red zigzag logo lol. I was good in front end so I need a backend advance knowledge but after some times I found laravel to rigid I got to switch to react because of its real-time update and first experience with react blow my mind.
After typing your normal npx install on the command line, that rotating React logo that comes after on your browser when your server is ready was my first sign that this is the language I want, but I got a big problem, I need good knowledge of JavaScript grin .

During all this time all jobs that has being coming to my side was php. Had to go back to php and start upgrading new php7 features. I no go lie its a lovely experience. I tested Node.js, iconic and react native. PHP is here to stay at least in Nigeria and the creator are improving on it everyday with a large community.

Later find out that React can accept any back end you throw at it. Na wa o

Nairaland self na PHP.

Learn it as a hobby, because very soon the big bourgeoisie will replace us with machines. undecidedundecided that is when you will understand what unemployment is.

would A.I really replace coding and leave developers jobless?

It might happen, you know how determined these rich cows are. Only the few people who can manage the AI would have jobs the rest go your way, that would be good if it happens so people can finally understand the purposeless world they live in. They are already planning on replacing 3d artists, watched a conference by blender guru sometime ago, I think it's that video that made me understand that we are toys in the hands of a few.

That is what those who worked in publishing houses back in the 19th century thought, that machines can't replace people. When it happened it was good that they kept quiet, it happens in many industries, machine replaces man, man finds another field. There has been extensive research into this, a breakthrough could happen at anytime and just like magic, another industrial era begins. Unemployment will only get worse, face it.

What of beginners that's just starting the journey??

Due to this sheer confusion, I currently concentrate on learning Data structure and Algorithm. All frameworks and library learning are being suspended.

Everyone is clamoring learn IT, learn It. Now hin don become hobby.

Don't be too hysteric, it's going to happen in the far future hopefully. And yah what you're learning is good enough keep on. I repeat it might not happen in a long time. Even though technology is moving faster than its shadow we should remember that AI is code and code must have bugs. What I am trying to say is please be careful and be ready for anything, a change could happen at anytime. It's as annoying as death.

Please leave data structures and algorithms for now and learn the frameworks and the libraries. Learn the practical now. Knowledge of data structures and algorithms is only used to ace job interviews. You can start learning it once you are actively job hunting.

Your projects and the stuff you build whilst learning is what is even going to get you to the interview stage which is most times a data structures and algorithms test or a take home test.

The issue here is that, I don't know the stack to concentrate on,(web vs app vs data science).
The previous op @ front page that has almost all technology skills and nothing to show for it.

I don't want to burn midnight candles for years and later on see it has a hobby.

Web. You can use JavaScript to build mobile apps with react native and ionic. Learn JavaScript. Leave data structures and algorithms now. Once you are proficient and start job hunting you can learn data structures and algorithms.

One thing you have to know is that even if you are the best JavaScript programmer on earth, jobs aren't going to come to you on a platter of gold. That op that posted knows JavaScript but how does his portfolio look? How many jobs has he applied to? No one is gonna give you a 6 figure job because you know JavaScript. You have to get out there.

What will you have a person just venturing into IT learn in this 2020( web vs app vs Data science). With respect to entry into labour market and its saturation with the future in view.

Data science of course, WordPress has started making web dev look like a joke, applications aren't all that attractive to but data science to me is good out of the three.

Are you sure about this? They could test him in a job interview and failure is inevitable without the knowledge of data structures or algorithms.

Lol his portfolio is what will even give him that interview. A front end developer position today needs knowledge of HTML CSS JavaScript React maybe one database. A full stack developer position needs knowledge of all of the above and another language. If you don't know this how are you even going to get to that interview and not all companies use data structures and algorithms to test employees. Only companies with businesses that involves large amounts of data test with it. Most companies give a design for you to rebuild. Besides learning data structures and algorithms, what language is he going to use to practicalise that subject matter. He has to be proficient in one language at least learn the basics of it before learning that.

GPT3 is already generating basic HTML/CSS pages. Scary.

Not only that bro. It can even generate SQL queries, generate ML and DL algorithms (when AI is automating AI) and many more. Though the researchers at OpenAI still have a long way to go on the project. It isn't bug free and it generates jargons sometimes.

Most developers are going to suffer due to this latest breakthrough in AI but I pity web devs more. Only highly skilled ones will eventually remain in the market.

For me Web is the best bet, because it never fades out in terms of demand, and the easiest to get into without a degree.

Well, someone on YouTube made an argument that AI is still very young and that attaining the stage of artificial general intelligence (AGI) , where machines can actually predict our thoughts, is still very far away. The AGI stage is where most AI companies are aiming to get to.

Also, the guy said GPT3 is at most, an advanced auto-completion machine bound to make gross blunders. So maybe there's still time to get into IT, rake some good bucks and get out before doomsday. But web devs are sure going down first grin

Data Science is good, but sometimes employers look forward to a kind of scientific background as compared to say front end web development for instance.

This data structures and algorithm thing is sometimes overstated in my opinion. I mean who learns a language from scratch without coming across data structures.

Python was my first language ( without a computer science background) and once I understood things like list, dictionaries, query, loops, and their application in pandas and django, I knew then that I was way better than before.

Moving over to javascript( another dynamic language) and even Dart ( non dynamic language), they all had the same concept. I only had to get used to syntaxes.

Infact to me, javascript is just python with more curly braces and semi columns at the end, no real differences in terms of the concept. Javascript was more familiar to me than Html and css.

So I believe learning data structures and algorithms comes from learning languages in depth and building projects especially 2D games at first ( not websites ).

Although we are still yet to see a truly intelligent system, but saying that AI is still very young is not correct. AI has been in existence since the era of John McCarthy (1955 to be precise), therefore, it is as old many fields in IT.

Sure, it is still safe to enter into IT at this stage, most especially in Nigeria where we have a very slow pace of development.

The next company/country to discover a truly intelligent system would lead the next industrial revolution.
