The Federal government has decried the closure of Nigerian Traders shops in Ghana saying urgent steps would be taken to address the issue.

The Ghanian authorities had explained that the closure of the shops belonging to Nigerian traders was premised on their ‘failure’ to pay the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) registration fees.

The requirement for GIPC registration is $1 million minimum foreign equity, while registration fee is 31,500 cedis.

While reacting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama described the closure of the shops as painful.

“Nigerian Government has watched with dismay the painful videos of the forceful closure of the shops of Nigerian traders in #Ghana. Urgent steps will be taken.” he twitted.

The president of Nigerian Traders Union in Ghana, Mr Chukwuemeka Nnaji, had in an interview decried the closure of shops owned by Nigerians, saying the Ghanaian authorities demanded cash payment of $1million from them before the shops would be opened.

He said an inter-ministerial task force went round on August 10 to identify shops owned by Nigerian traders and requested for registration of business taxes, resident permit, standard control and Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) registration.

Nnaji, added that the humiliation of Nigerians in Ghana, “is getting out of hands” just as he called for the intervention of the Nigerian government.

Notice he said it's painful. He didn't claim what they did was illegal or violates ECOWAS protocols. What exactly is the peaceful resolution that he wants. If Traders violated law then Ghana did nothing wrong. Nigeria has similar laws on their books they enforce.

Lol it would be interesting to see if Ghana really want to fold on this issue during an election year. The ruling party would handing easy cannon fooder for their opposition. They would look weak violating their laws to appease foreigners.

Ps: the registration fee for trading company is 31,500 cedis. The capital requirements are a millon dollars. Ignorant people are misinforming the public becsuse they refuse do simple web search.

When Ghana people that can boast of 1million dollars are not up to 50, what an irony!

Demanding such from single shop owners amount to madness.

Nigerian traders in Ghana should come together to form a conglomerate. Get a massive plaza near the market to sell the various goods, register it with a name, bank account and directors.

Let's do the math,

$1,000,000 x #470

#470,000,000

And I ask...how much will now be the trading capital if these traders should pay this...it doesn't even make sense...The message is simple, Ghana is simply telling Nigerian traders, park and go we don't want you anymore.

fellow Nigerians, please leave that country and move on, when the house owner doesn't want you anymore, you have no business fighting him in his own house...It's foolish...the only sorry situation is the spineless attitude of Nigerian govt to protect it's citizens, It's a disaster to be a Nigerian coz even Somalia will treat you like a piece of shit...

For the Ghanian government to peg equity of foreign business to be at $1 Million dollars, it is an indirect way of saying "go back to your country".
