So I saw a post on the front page and it very much related to me, except that there are a few other factors to consider, I've been in a dilemma for some time and went through many of the comments on the aforementioned thread and majority suggests he stays back in his parents house, so I have come to ask for advice due to the slight but important differences in our situations.

So I am 23, turning 24 soon, I moved to Lagos in 2016 and have been staying with my father's immediate elder brother who stays in a 3 bedroom apartment somewhere on the island, he is a Reverend and is known very well in the community and so is very respected, I on the other hand will consider myself a disciplined fella, i keep my circle close, have very few friends, do not drink nor smoke, I don't party and not really the very social extroverted person, I have a girlfriend whom I intend to settle down with in like 4 years to come, she is not the overly expensive type, in fact, she rarely ever asks for cash as she is into her own business and her family is a bit comfortable too, so I do not part with cash too often for her sake.

I am done with schooling and ever since, I told myself that I will never submit my cv anywhere, and God has been gracious, I did my internship in an organization back in 2016 and after I was done, I was offered a job, the pay is not fantastic but very okay, I am paid 50k monthly but I am not needed daily at the office, I only go to the office 3 times a week and spend at most 4 hours. I also have a side hustle which I can call my main hustle cos it brings the most income, i earn about 150-300k monthly after expenses, it has been consistent ever since I started over 6 months ago.

Now here is my problem. The area where my uncle's house is are constantly having light problems, in fact, in the last 3 years, we have not enjoyed light for an accumulated period of 4 months, it is one problem to the other, as I speak, next month will make it 1 year without light in the community, it's gen noise everywhere in the night, and due to the nature of my job, I have to run the gen an average of 12-14 hours daily and that alone gulps about 8-10k weekly, due to what my uncle is into, he is not always home, he is always traveling around, he has never spent 2 consecutive weeks home (except during the Corona period) so I feed myself, I cook myself and all, I am mostly alone 90% of the time.

Now, due to my uncle's reputation in the community, my girlfriend can not visit me, we can't spend time together, etc, aside these problems, I am just fine staying with my uncle, he doesn't complain, he sees me as his son as he has no other child, we are more like friends as we gist and laugh, he knows I have a girlfriend and I am sure he will have no problem with me bringing her home, but I don't just feel comfortable with it myself. I have been able to save up a little above a million naira, my sister advised that I get a land in my home state but I feel it is useless right now as I do not have any intention of staying in my home state now. So considering all these expenses and troubles, I am considering moving out and getting a little self contain apartment for not more than 250k in an area with more stable power, I have been thinking about it and don't know if it is a good move to make at this point in my life.

I apologize for any typos you may come across in my writeup, I'm not such a great writer.

I am also a known member of this forum, I opened this account just for the sake of this topic as I intend to keep my identity private for some reasons.

Thanks.

Bro....The expenses you uncut while at your uncle's house will not be the same expenses when you get your own place....

Since you have a stable income already and probably a little savings....

I'd advice you use your savings to invest more....For instance....Estate business...where you are residing....if you can't secure a legal land in Lagos there, you consider lands around univerties environ in any state capital of your choice...

Why I ask that you invest more is because, you are giving yourself four years to settle down. So, after three years from now, you can rent a place and plan your future with your prospective wife to be.

My sister's advice was to get a land in my home state close to a university, she said one is available, and I can build a hostel there. But after seeing people on the other thread saying no one uses his life savings on fixed assets, (cos sincerely, building it will take a while) I reconsidered the whole thing.

Thank you sir for your contribution.

If you lose all that you've earned, can you confidently make it back? That's what you should work towards.

But if you are very confident of that, LEARN about crypto and invest into it. You can never go wrong once you learn.

If you're interested in agriculture (which of course is underrated), search for the moniker - cothebest

If you see it as a fix asset, you'll afraid to venture Into it...But if you see it as a business that it's return of investment will come only when you are settled with the project. It'll be a lifetime and will always generate I come. You can later convert it into a hotel. Your children will inherit it and will never be homeless.

You can stay there and no one cares if your girlfriend visits or otherwise. Why are you in a haste to rent an apt? Is there any place that you have constant power supply in Lagos? Isn't the Island a less traffic route if you work outside the Island? Focus on your hustles for now.

When I sat down to look at the expenses in my uncle's house, I began to ponder if the whole trouble was worth it.

Eg - I spend on average 35k monthly for fueling, multiply that by 6 months is almost a year rent, if I can get an area with at least 10 hours light daily, it will cut a lot of cost, I may spend maybe 15k monthly, and my office is 150 naira away from my uncle's place, and I intend to get a place even closer to the office. please help Me sha, what do I know sef.

Most importantly, proximity to work is key. 35k monthly is much for fueling and it indeed worth being considered. Have you thought of pooling office with someone around your area? I learned we now have office space sharing rentals on the Island. That would save you some amount and might improve productivity.

I'm a fellow freelancer like you (I work on Fiverr). Was in same shoes as you few years ago.

Dude, you don't need to move out. That 250k you intent spending on for new accommodation is enough to get a solar inverter that would serve you well (I spent less than that and I'm enjoying it till date

If you think your girlfriend is more important than your hustle to you for now. Then rent an apartment
