Poultry Farmers Please I Need Your Help (pictures Attached) by Petyr1: 2:14pm On Aug 21, 2020 |
I noticed this illness in one of my chickens and I discovered that it has infected others. I noticed most of them sleep often even in daytime and open their mouth as if they can't breathe. I also discovered that their anus is swollen and reddish. Although I have isolated the infected ones, what can I use to treat them and what is the name of this infection?

@Petyr1 The sticking out of anus in poultry, especially the broilers is called "PROLAPSE" I presumed you are breeding them on top feed right? Causes is excess intake of protein and it is not contagious Treatment: Isolate the affected bird(s) to avoid pecking from others, wash your hands and rinse in fresh soap free water ( warm water if possible), then, using your last finger tip, push the protruding vent back inside, feed them less and finally, get a good multivitamin containing electrolyte example is vitalyte and administer in their drinking water; adhere to the above mentioned, and you are good to go. Finally, switch from whatever feed product you are using for them now to another feed product...hybrid feed will do just fine 8 Likes 1 Share |

Petyr1:From the observations here, i could deduce that your poultry pen biosecurity(regular cleaning, temperature and beddings) needs an urgent attention.... try sweeping the pen at least once a week for the now if on large scale but if on a small scale, if it is possible, do the sweeping on daily basis, after sweeping, you can sprinkle cold ashes on the floor as a kind of absorbent before pouring in your wood shavings (wood shavings and not saw dust pls) check this birds out at just 12 days old, i was able to achieve this due to the fact that my biosecurity is top notch 2 Likes

[quote author=Petyr1 post=93068295] okay. Thank you but which antibiotics should I give them? Antibiotics to a sick bird is a direct death sentence bro, don't make that mistake.....just clean your poultry regularly and administer multivitamin to ease the stress....there is too much ammonia built up on your floor already, the reason they are gasping for air. I wish you all the best |

chukwuibuipob:I went to a poultry farm but I met a lady there and not the real owner of the farm. The lady said I should use my hand to push the anus back. I did that although it was painful for the bird but not everything enter back. I told her and she said i should come later or tomorrow that i will see the owner of the farm. The lady too was surprised when she saw it. |
Re: Poultry Farmers Please I Need Your Help (pictures Attached) by Petyr1: 8:27pm On Aug 21, 2020 |
chukskafor:yeah! Exactly what a local farmer told me. I pushed it back and part of the anus enter back. I will try another push tomorrow. It was painful for the hen though. By the way what do you mean by "breeding them on top feed right" ? |

chukskafor:I don't have any specific feed o. I'm only breeding them to eat after they have mature. But basically I feed them with grains (maize or guinea corn) but they also eat my food remnant too lol |

chukskafor: Please, when do you start spraying the saw dust on the floor. My birds are two weeks now and I've not started putting any saw dust there. Again, any difference between saw dust and wood shavings? |
Re: Poultry Farmers Please I Need Your Help (pictures Attached) by chukskafor(m): 1:02am On Aug 23, 2020 |
Chibydinho:Sorry for replying you late, as for your questions; 1. If you are breeding from day old and you happened to use newspaper from day one, by day 3 upwards you can remove the newspaper on the floor and replace with wood shavings, like myself, i start using wood shavings from day one. 2. At two weeks of age, floor is already supposed to be covered with either of rice bran ( the shaff gotten at rice mill) or wood shavings depending on which is readily accessible in your area 3. Yes there is a big difference between the duo of saw dust and wood shavings which are; a. Saw dust is very smooth and looks similar to the birds feed, that is one of the reason it is not advice able to use it for your chicken beddings, as it can easily mix with feed and when birds consume it alongside feed, that's an automatic CRD(chronic respiratory disease) b. Wood shavings are the ones gotten at a wood planing workshop which looks fingerlike, check the picture of some birds i posted herein, the ones you saw on the floor is what is known as wood shavings, though mine was not that much due to the fact that i sweep the poultry pen daily or at least thrice a week. Hope i was able to answer your question sir. 2 Likes |

chukskafor: You answered straight to the point, Thank you. The attached picture is the floor of my day 16 birds. Seems, I need to introduce the wood shavings immediately since sweeping the dried poo on the floor is very difficult for me. Should I also use wood shavings for my other birds that are day 8 now which is the second picture?

Re: Poultry Farmers Please I Need Your Help (pictures Attached) by chukskafor(m): 3:44pm On Aug 23, 2020 |
Chibydinho:Go ahead and use the wood shavings even for a day old, as it will rrduce odour by imbibing in the liquid faeces and also makes cleaning very easy; not only that, but it will also help keep birds warm, being that there is no much direct contact with birds and the floor 1 Like |
