I need to know something.
When you look at the mirror and shine torchlight to the mirror, the pupil( middle black hole) appears white. Please is it normal for everybody or it's a cataract?

Is the affected person an adult or a child?

Could cataract recur after surgery?

Fortunately, cataracts cannot recur after surgery because artificial lenses do not form cataracts.

I would have loved to see this leaf of yours and see if it can be sent to the laboratory and they would figure out what it contains.

However, at the moment, there is no leave or substance that you would put into your eyes to clear a cataracts.

Most importantly, please, never put anything into your eye, especially a heated substance.

I would like to recommend a leaf for the laboratory analysis, it might come out useful. Who knows

Is there any hope for someone that been blind due to glaucoma?

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for glaucoma.
Early presentation to the hospital helps reduce the chances of going blind from glaucoma

I have cataract I once did the surgery but the thing has returned worse is it safe to do it again considering that the first optamologist may not have done a very good job

Cataracts do not come back on the same eye that was operated.
however, some times after surgery, some part of the natural eye capsule that was left can become cloudy again, and the symptoms would be similar to that of cataracts and you might think it has returned.

Fortunately, It can be treated and the treatment is simpler than the original cataract surgery. It uses a procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy.

You can see a consultant opthamologist in your state (you can find them at the FMCs or teaching hospitals) and they would take care of this for you.

God bless you OP. Timely and educative. My mum couldn't see with one of her eyes and she was diagnosed of glaucoma. The ophthalmologist said it's due to cataract and further tests showed that cataract has spread to the other eye though she can see clearly with that. She's diabetic and above 60.
The doctor prescribed some drugs, eye drops and said we should come back end of this month for further test and possible prep for surgery.
We went to Babcock teaching hospital where someone recommended that has one of the best facilities in Lagos and Ogun state.
1. Will she be operated to treat the glaucoma and remove the cataract from the other eye?
*I went through the thread and you mentioned something like optic/artificial lens.
2. Will that be used for my mum if the glaucoma can not be treated?
Thanks.

How much it would take for the surgery and how long time to heal after...
Catract extraction + intraocular lens insertion (to replace the bad lens)= 30,000-35,000 naira at the JOS UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (JUTH). you are discharged a day after surgery..

Your mums cataract surgery is highly dependent on the control of the glaucoma.
The major aim of glaucoma treatment I to prevent tunnel vision or even comlet loss of vision. This is dependent on the time of presentation of the patient and compliance to prescribed treatments.

At the moment, there is no substance like that. When there is, i would surely let nairalanders know about it.

However, there are eyedrops that can help you manage the situation if it is not well advanced

Bee therapists and natural honey dealers have been recommending natural remedies, but I'm not convince yet. That's why I want further enlightment.

Thank you for advice.

someone battling with high BP and cataract, how can the surgery be done
The person needs to see a cardiologist and have his/her blood pressure controlled. Its in the place of the cardiologist to write the ophthalmologist clearing the individual for surgery..

Thanks for sharing, but does it mean that it will be mature enough before it's removed surgically? someone close to me it's affected with it, although he's been to the hospital, they optometrist abi optician whichever told him the cataract isn't ripe for surgery instead he would be given glasses which will aid his vision and sight,so is there something we can do pending when it's time for the surgery, thanks.
Based on some classification system cataracts can be classified as mature or immature but this has nothing to do with the decision to surgically extract it. The individual needs to see an OPHTHALMOLIGIST not an OPTICIAN OR OPTOMETRIST..

You would be surprised you won't spend more than 5k in treating the condition once and for all. Remember I said in a teaching hospital ( e get why)

Please see an opthalmologist for proper assessment. A stitch in time saves nine

I would not be able to tell, until i am able to see the affected eyes.

I would like to ask if you have visited a hospital since it occured, especially to see an opthamologist?
If you havent, i would suggest you do so.

Hello sir, this thread is coming at the right time.

About four days ago, I slept and woke up to see the down part of my eyes swollen(that place females use their eye pencils on) without using anything the slight pain and the swollen had stopped the second day. Then the third day it became swollen than the first Time and till now.

Please with the description above can you tell me the cause, and what could be used.

Note: I have never had such problem in the past.

Similar to what you were told at the hospital, the person can be given glasses as well as medications that can help him/her manage the situation, until such a time.

It doesnt mean that the surgery cannot be done, it can.

However, when it comes to surgeries, we have to weigh the risk of surgery against the benefit at that point in time.

If the sight isnt very bad or advanced, the risk outweighs the benefit, but if the person has total vision loss or near total, the the benefit outweighs the risk.

I believe that is what was considered in your case.
it isn't that bad, what he is experiencing is blurry vision and sometimes the eyes drops tears,it just started this year though but it's already disturbing him

It seems they don't really understand. The truth is that most Nigerians have phobia of going under the blade because of the few sad stories the have heard. You need to find a way of passing th message across that you are progressively lossing your vision. I think on your next visit to the hospital the doctor (ophthalmologist) should find a way of showing then the cataract. Maybe it may swing their decision.

Likely a chalezion or stye. Can't tell until I see the affected eye. NB: it can be any other pathology the diagnosis can only be conclusive after an examination ovthe affected eye.

The glaucoma is said to be deep and as I said earlier; she can't see with the said eye. She didn't complain before now, but the ophthalmologist said it's been there for about a year. We have since been compliant with the prescribed drugs. We have an appointment on 29th of this month.
Just curious if there will be on operation on both eyes for both glaucoma and cataract or only on the other eye that has been infected with only cataract Thanks

And is it true teenagers can have cataract?
Also use of phones can cause cataract, because they emit radiation.
Fact: Dial *#07# on your phone. If it is SAR <1.6watt/kg, you are safe but if it's > you are exposing yourself to too much radiation.
Likely a cataract. Yes teenagers can have cataract..
