Are you in need of a place to quarantine in *Calgary* when you land for just 2 weeks? If yes, Living Christ Evangelical Mission has a solution to this. Mail Pastor Jumoke via jumokeolatunde@yahoo.co.uk to book your stay in advance *for free*

Hi 19CannyMum,
I can see you're in Alberta, please can I reach out to you? I'm new on nairaland and I don't know how to send private messages. Is there an email address I can reach you on, please? I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you so much.

19CannyMum:

I think you should take is one step at a time, right now the step you should worry about is getting your visa.

I don't know much about what students are entitled to and I don't know about prices in Ontario.

For Alberta as a PR, you'd get about 1350 in CCB.
Free healthcare, extended healthcare for the children (dentist, eyecare, prescriptions) under Alberta Works
Dayhome subsidy of about 900

You'll pay about 1k rent for a 2br basement (utilities included)
About 600 for dayhome/afterschool (parent portion after subsidy)
Groceries about 300 monthly
Bus pass comes with your fees. Stay on a street with a school or 2, and a direct bus to a supermarket and train station. There'll probably be a dayhome opposite the school (My street is exactly like this, I'm not just yarning dust).

If you work for 20 hours at minimum wage, you will earn about 1k. Arrange your work hours to be daytime while your children are at daycare. Spend the evening with them. Do your homework while they're asleep.

If daddy is in the picture and working in Naija, hopefully he can support with like $500 monthly to keep the budget balanced.

Like I said I don't know much about Ontario, or if students get all these benefits and subsidies. Just dropped this here for any single mom (with no more than 2 children o! It becomes punishment when they're too plenty lol) planning to come to Alberta and having similar fears.

They never said they have visa

Yeah. That's why I asked. If she is yet to apply for a visa, maybe it is best for her not to post specifics about her case here.

you can only get a shared room for that amount. But no one will rent a room out to 3 people here. To even get a study visa you need to prove financial resources.
The bolded is a major issue.

Not every school has bus pass in fees. I don't know about Niagara College but my school doesn't provide bus pass. She may want to confirm from her school.

Why must a person be liberal at all times, what if a person is conservative??
No one has said you have to abandon your convictions. There are lots of conservatives in Canada, some are even on the far right. They won the popular vote in the last election. However, in most cases, what Canada calls conservatism is different from what you may expect. Whatever your views are, you're expected to get along with others just fine. In the workplace, school etc, it is best to keep your views to yourself. Generally speaking, politics, religion, sexuality etc are not topics you want to bring up in the workplace here.

Remember I was speaking about Alberta, where living is affordable smiley To the best of my knowledge, all the govt owned colleges in Calgary (at least BVC, SAIT, MRU and UC.) include subsidized bus pass in their fees. Maybe other Alberta cities don't sha.

Oh maybe I should specifically say Toronto. University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University do not have student pass in their fees. I think Seneca college and Humber College also do not have. Sheridan college(Brampton) had one but it seems it got scrapped when student choice initiative came to be.

Nonetheless, students are able to get discounted passes using their school ids but they have to pay out of pocket for it.

I think you got most parts of the etiquette right, the handshake(pre covid) and eye contact. Speak slowly cos of accent, pick up their choice of words. Naija's English is more British-like, e.g pants vs trouser, booth vs trunk etc
You might say hi to your neighbors if you just a bought a house on the street if not no need for that.
Any hairstyle or clothing works, nothing too loud and check with your employer's dress code. Stay away from discussing your religious or political belief, be liberal at all times.

Thanks. Lol @ handshake pre-covid!

It depends on the company, industry, part of the country you work in, years of experience, and many other factors.

Could be anything between $2.5k to $15k USD/month.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2020/08/new-temporary-public-policy-will-allow-visitors-to-apply-for-a-work-permit-without-having-to-leave-canada.html

August 24, 2020—Ottawa—Visitors who are currently in Canada and have a valid job offer will be able to apply for an employer-specific work permit and, if approved, receive the permit without having to leave the country, thanks to a new public policy announced today by the Honourable Marco E.L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

This temporary policy change takes effect immediately and will benefit employers in Canada who continue to face difficulties finding the workers they need, as well as temporary residents who would like to contribute their labour and skills to Canada’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, temporary residents who remained in Canada were encouraged to maintain valid legal status. With air travel limited around the world, some visitors to Canada have been unable to leave, while some foreign workers had to change their status to visitor because their work permit was expiring and they didn’t have a job offer to be able to apply for a new work permit. Some employers in Canada have also faced ongoing labour and skills shortages throughout this period, including those who provide important goods and services that Canadians rely on.

To be eligible, an applicant looking to benefit from this temporary public policy must

have valid status in Canada as a visitor on August 24, 2020 and remain in Canada

have a job offer

submit an application for an employer-specific work permit that is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment, no later than March 31, 2021

meet all other standard admissibility criteria

This temporary public policy also provides the opportunity for applicants who meet these criteria and who had a valid work permit in the past 12 months to begin working for their new employer before their work permit application has been fully approved.

To do so, they need to follow the instructions for the process described here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/permit/temporary/after-apply-next-steps.html#visitors

We got this from naija while planning our trip last year and has so far proved very useful. It was a tip from someone here, maybe Einsteino, can't remember. Hubby uses it with his naija bought clipper for all of us, lol. I've had to go on low cut too with the boys; my wigs have come in handy though. It's called a step down/ step up transformer and has really come in handy as I hear grooming can be quite pricey. However, this may be more useful for those yet to land; since you're here already you'd have to go with ednut's suggestion and probably get a new clipper.

Nice idea. I got my son's clipper from Canadian Tire for $14 though. Probably cheaper than the step down...
