The second option would be a waste.

no, it really wouldn't. I know in Nigeria/Africa airports are treated like they're supposed to be rare but in reality, they're just bus or train stations in the air. Most major cities in the world have several in one town. If you look at the cost of flying in Nigeria, you'll understand that we're robbing ourselves by pretending airports are a luxury and are supposed to be 1 per every 4-5 states. In reality, every state is supposed to have 2 if we want a well functioning economic situation. Nigerians fly a LOT more than anyone else. We will soon have people in every state that will have to fly once a day or once a week for their work as is the case all over the world

It's not by construction it's by viability.

Nigerias airport usage data is very low, because a huge population of Nigerians are poor, why then should u proliferate airports all over when a huge population of the citizens can't afford it.

What u would do is create a system where the entire 5airports won't be viable cause of low traffic

Owerri refused to grow as it’s supposed to, it’s urban infrastructures frequently collapse like pack of cards.

1) Successive govs of Imo state have been lavishing the state’s capital development funds till today on Owerri since 1976, not since 1999. Yet Owerri remains what it’s today.
2) All government institutions in Imo that induce development were literally seized, and still coveted by Owerri people for Owerri alone.
3) Owerri is state capital.

4) Owerri has had a modern surface public water supply system since the 1980s.
By magic, give these 4 advantages above to
Orlu since 1976, Orlu would have developed more than Owerri today.

We must not discount the hurting injustice in Owerri people withholding all that can induce modern development in Imo state for Owerri alone.
If one holds others down, one must remain on the ground to maintain the hold.

Not only do you build with anticipation of being poor forever, Nigeria's population is not poor. Or better said, there are enough wealthy people in Nigeria to equal to total population of other countries.

if 10% of Nigerians aren't poor, that's 18,000,000 people. That's the population of the Netherlands which has 28 airports in a landmass the size of Kaduna State.

We need to re-frame our mentality about airports. It's a bus station for airplanes and the more you have the better for everyone. Maintenance on 1 airport and the entire SE has to go to Lagos to travel. Nigerians pay more to fly than any other people in the world because we think Airports are at a similar caliber of rarity as a nuclear power plant. If you have airport options it stops being something exclusively for 'the rich', so consider that as well.

please airports are seen as exclusive for the rich here because the average person is poor not because there isn't proliferation of airports around the country..building airports all round the country isn't suddenly going to make air travel cheap or affordable..you are simply going to create many redundant and underutilised airports..you want some majority of people can afford and like to use? Extensive rail system

Yes it actually will make it cheaper. Also, again, you don't build with anticipation of remaining poor, that is how you end up with 1 functioning seaport serving 180,000,000 people. Many of the people on Nigeria's roads should and can be in the air. This takes pressure off the roads and reduces the amount of repairs they need, accidents we have, traffic jams, and scheduling disasters.

Lets be smart. A flight from Lagos to Owerri by Air Peace is roughly 27,000. A drive from Abia to Lagos is roughly the same when you factor gas, food and having an assault rifle pointed in your face for bribes 18-27 times if it's December. Not factoring wear and tear from bad roads, getting stuck etc. And tens and thousands of people drive from Abia to Lagos yearly. Not to mention goods brought in at the port that also needs to be driven. So what demand will an airport in Abia lack?

But if everyone that wants to fly from Abia, everyone that wants to fly from Imo and everyone that wants to fly from Anambra all have to go to Owerri to fly, you can image the impact on the cost of a ticket.

We can't approach development with the mentality of underdevelopment.

Even if every state in the south east region builds airports to international standard, if those who wield apex political power in Nigeria don’t wanna make the airports take international flights, what’s the point building the airports?

Any group which controls apex political power in a country run by unitary govt system, like Nigeria, the group determines how far the business of the federating units can go.

Airports are built in NIgeria for two reasons. The first one is for bragging rights. The second and most important reason is a place where the elites especially politicians in those places will land instead of landing in another state and driving for hours. That's the reasons why the proposed Abia airport will be closer to Umuahia than Aba where it is supposed to be cited.

Self-centred political elites in Nigeria serve themselves. In many states, especially in the SE, State governors build or keep the states infrastructures and social amenities only in the state capital, to the convenience of the political elites clustered in the state capital. They never think about what government projects can be cited outside the state capital to engineer modern development in places outside the state capital.

Imo state is like the worst victim of self centered political elites.
Surrounding states - Abia, Anambra, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Ebonyi are far better than Imo state.

lol this your economics no follow...you build up wealth from bottom to top and not the other way around..you are also comparing about apples and oranges with the airport and seaport comparison..obviously nigeria ought to have at least 4 to 5 functioning seaports along it coast which in turn ought to be all connected to rail(freight more importantly for mass evacuation of goods)

I hope you'll get a chance to leave the country so that it will give more perspective on what an airport is and what role it plays in life for people in growing and well developed countries. I think what your saying doesn't apply anymore because, again, a flight from Owerri to Lagos is 27,000 if you book it today, 20-23,000 if you book in advance. That is very affordable, especially if it'll get you to your destination in one hour.

Again, Nigerians overthink airports. It's a concrete landing strip and office and a place to wait for flights at it's core. Everything else is dressing. I live in a city that has 4 airports, two international and it's several times smaller than Lagos.

The mentality we have about airports, imagine if it was shifted to bus stations. I want you to imagine a reality where and airport is seen as a bus station for planes because that's what it is everywhere in the world with a functioning and reliable economy. It's not something 'for the elite', it's #23,000 Naira and this is a ticket which over 5 states compete to buy Image a ticket one city is competing for, or one state.

You can state your point without condescension. What gives you the impression that i've not left the country. Do you know me from anywhere?

You want to compare a city in Nigeria to LONDON? The point is not about building airports but about the cost it will cost building them. Your point would have been valid if building an airport comes cheap.

your phyiscal location is not a compliment or an insult. If you have been outside of Nigeria then I'm having a harder time understand your sentiments. Is London in heaven? lol I don't understand why you're capitalizing it.
Building an airport is not expensive, don't take bloated Nigerian corruption budgets seriously. There are different scales of airport and you don't need anything fancy if you're trying to be practical.

This is insulting to whoever it was used to address; and condescending by who addressed the other like that.
A lot of times, poorly educated people here believe that once they insult you, they have won the argument. Imo is a state touted to harbor mostly well educated people, but it does not show here.

Education doesn't stop someone from insulting another person. Going and coming to Nigeria isn't a compliment or an insult. If you want to feel it was an insult I can't stop you but the idea that someone is insulting for saying you didn't go somewhere is really ignorant. If someone can insult you just by saying you haven't been somewhere then you have a very stressful life ahead

That being said, I don't mean any offense. Changing physical location doesn't make one person better than another; try to reconsider that ideology.

Since the last 50 years, Owerrebeiri-Orlu water boreholes have been rehabilitated nearly by every state and even federal government. They dried up shortly after.
Udenwa dug the Eluama-Orlu water borehole which packed up shortly after commission, like most water boreholes of government hardly maintained. Someone from Udenwa government callously named it: “Orlu Regional Water Supply Project.” Falsehood. Orlu Regional Surface water supply project was mapped out by IMSG starting from Mbakwe’s to supply treated water to most of the local government areas in Orlu zone. Udenwa was busy reactivating the multi billion Naira worth Okigwe regional surface water supply project, maintaining the multi billion Naira worth Owerri Regional Surface Water Supply system.

Rehabilitate water boreholes to supply a population of nearly half of a million people with water; instead of building the surface water supply project proposed by IMSG starting from Mbakwe’s? Orlu and entire Orlu zone still yearning for its proposed Regional Surface Watee supply project - a most sustainable public water supply system.

New autonomous community lauched again..in Imo state.

https://www.nairaland.com/6096122/okezie-akwiwu-emerges-eze-elect-ogwuaga

Okezie Chikere Akwiwu Emerges Eze-elect Ogwuaga Abba Autonomous Community Imo State
The people of Ogwuaga Abba autonomous Community in Nwangele Local government area of Imo State erupted in wild jubilation as Chief Okezie Chikere Akwiwu emerged the Eze- elect of the community having beaten his close rival with a wide margin.
Available information to the media revealed that out of 15 kindreds in Ogwuaga Abba Autonomous Community Chief Okezie Akwiwu won in all 11 kindreds that voted and he subsequently emerged the Eze elect.
Leaders from the community have expressed joy that peace had returned to the community after rancorous activities by some individuals.
Speaking shortly after his emergence to the press in his proposed palace, the Eze Elect, Chief Okezie Chikere Akwiwu who is now the Akaraka Ohazurumee Eze Ohamadike (II) of Ogwuaga Abba autonomous Community described it as the will of God just as he expressed delight over the honour given by his people.
Eze Elect Okezie Akwiwu who is the third son of four stated that he answered the call after consulting his eldest brother. “When my people approached me. “I told them that I needed time to think about it and I consulted my eldest brother,” He told me that he was not interested in the throne, I then gave my consent,” he pointed out.
He, however, described the scenario that characterized the activities as very unfortunate.
According to the new Eze elect, Ogwuaga Abba is a peace-loving people but what happened recently was not what any person would want to wish,” we will continue to preach peace, love and continue to encourage our people to be educated, empowered economically and to acquire skills for their well being” he stated.
The consummate businessman stated that under his rulership, he would not hesitate to uphold the culture and those aspects that have been neglected over the years
He, therefore, encouraged his brothers and sisters and other extended relations to sustain the principles upon which the Akwiwu dynasty is stood for, recalling that their grandfather was a great man who achieved greatness by showing compassion and support to people that came around him.
He urged his brothers, sisters and other descendants to uphold those basic tenets their grandfather set out.
An elder statesman from the community Ationye Celestine Senior described the emergence of Eze elect Okezie Chikere Akwiwu as the best thing that has happened to the community.
He said the entire community trouped out en-mass to vote and ensure that the wishes of the people prevailed. He called on those who tried to ferment crisis to have a rethink and come together for the progress and development of Ogwuaga Abba.
Another stakeholder who also spoke to the press was Chief Vitals Anyadiegwu noted that the entire Dimushe came together and beckoned on Chief Okezie Chikere Akwiwu to take the throne as the traditional ruler of the community due to his philanthropic disposition.
According to him, it was a contributed idea by the entire Dimuzies. He further pointed out that it always dependent on the decision of the entire community and not the person’s position in the family.

right. Even the idea of an airport having 'low patronage'. So? Airports are sustained by the federal government, its not a private business that needs patronage. Imagine worry about partonage before building a road.

Patronage is what and airline should worry about, not an airport.

If you don't use an airport it doesn't disappear, same with roads, so if airlines didn't patronize it, it would exist. As income levels (if that's what's stopping people, and it's not) rise we will have the infrustructure in place to meet the growth. We would have built for the future.

Nigeria isn't plague by a lack of growth, Nigeria is plagued by the inability to keep up with it's growth. New neighborhods don't have roads, roads aren't wide enough for all the new drivers, etc.

You solve this problem by building ahead of your growth.

hypothetical

1. I know that we are growing 3% a year economically,
2. I know that airline traffic is increasing 10% a year
3. In 5 years the current airports we have won't be enough.
4. Solution: Lets stay ahead of this curve by building 1 new airport every 3 years until we have covered all necessary ground.

Nigeria method
1. This aiport was built in 1960. That should be enough
