Nigerian Doctors To Protest Over Pay Rise, Better Welfare & Adequate Facilities by Itzstarboi(op): 5:33pm On Sep 05, 2020
Doctors in state-run hospitals in Nigeria will go on strike next week to demand a pay rise, better welfare and adequate facilities, union leaders have said.

The strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which represents some 40 percent of doctors, is the latest in a string of stoppages by medics to hit Africa’s most populous nation as it struggles to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“NEC (national executive council) resolved to proceed on an indefinite nationwide strike action from Monday,” said NARD president Aliyu Sokomba in a statement late Friday.

The action would not be called off until the government provides “life insurance and death in service benefits for all health workers” as well as paying outstanding salaries and allowances.

He said the union wanted pay parity for both doctors in federal and state health institutions.

Strikes by medics have been common in Nigeria where the health sector is underfunded.

The authorities fear any reduction in capacity could severely hamper its ability to tackle the pandemic as the number of cases continues to rise.

In June, NARD staged a week-long strike over welfare and inadequate protective kits but doctors treating virus cases remained on the job.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation of 200 million inhabitants, has recorded 54,743 Covid-19 cases and 1,051 deaths.

More than 800 health workers have been infected by the virus, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

They are never fighting for better facilities but pay. I wonder why they would concern themselves with how much Federal employed doctors earn. Why not protest that private doctors should be well paid?

A solution in my opinion although not the best is to relief them of their jobs. This would help them understand that while they could agitate for a better pay, it should be because they have a justification and not comparing with others since they are not withheld from applying for federal roles.

This is one of the entitlement mentality we suffer.

In nigeria, doctors will protest before getting benefits.

Re: Nigerian Doctors To Protest Over Pay Rise, Better Welfare & Adequate Facilities by tuoyoojo(m):
Every one should just go on strike as it is d only language the govt understands

As long as political officers holders are not constrained to use our health facilities they would not improve our health facilities.

If the countries our public office holders always run to for treatment, treat their healthcare facilities the way we are treating ours, theirs would be in shambles

Every one who feel that they are not given what they deserve should do the needful and not bad mouth those who are fighting for their right. if you are happy with what you are receiving by all means continue.

Some people would now be beefing doctors that are leaving the country everyday......

Dem go protest tire. Like Buhari, some of these governors have lost their hearing. They don't care whatever the masses say again. They have the power and machinery to intimidate and pummel anyone that decide to stand on their way. Nigeria is truly in the wrong hands.

It is not an entitlement mentality if you are entitled to it.

It goes to show the vision of the policy makers who have perpertually placed health as a secondary part of the economy, hence the low wage rates in the sector. It is a shameful reality and will remain so unless the bunch of incompetent and greedy policy makers would vanish from the scene.
