1984 was the year Nigeria had a semblance of sanity embedded into national consciousness.

during this mans days , we only saw buhari on ceremonial occasions like independence days or army remembrance days , this was the key man that controlled the affairs of the nation , and the war against indiscipline which he started is still up till today been observed nationwide after over 30years ,
if this man or that regime had continued to rule definitely Nigeria will not be where it is presently , we would have gone far far ahead of where we are today , it is puzzling and strange to know that the same people idiagbon used and who performed very very well during his reign are the same people ibb used and they institutionalized corruption into our system , which translates to the fact that if the head is rotten the whole body is sick , if a leader is dumb ,old and sick and has nothing to offer definitely all his cabinet and the entire govt will be clueless and absolutely useless , tey will just be looting the treasury

see all the hypocritical accolades here. Many of you or your parents hated that corrective regime. You now realise he was the brain behind WAI. Nigeria would have been less corrupt and more developed had those duo stayed the 8yrs just like the maradona. Nigerians want a great nation, but none want to go through the ordeal of building one. Sadly Babangida happened, Nigerians trooped in celebration to the streets, but things fell apart, and conditions were no longer at ease.

This gentleman was ABROAD when the coup started, he could have stayed back rather than face the brutal military that had already brutalized Bihari. Indeed they might even be executed by the new govt who felt idiagbon was too tough on their "international drug dealings". When asked why he came back, the very brave Officer said "he couldn't have left his principal (Buhari) by himself hence his return to imprisonment in Nigeria. Reminds me of the Colonel who decided to die with Ironsi in Ibadan EVEN THOUGH he could have walked away ( He was Yoruba so he wasn't the target of the Northern coup plotters). You don't have brave men like these TODAY. It's either they are running to Ivory Coast or to Israel....God bless you General Idiagbon!!!

Tunde Idiagbon Turns 78 Today.

General Babatunde "Tunde" Abdulbaki Idiagbon (14 September 1943 – 24 March 1999) was a Nigerian general who served as the 6th Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters (second-in-command) under military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari from 1983 to 1985.

He was also a key member of Nigeria's military governments between 1966 and 1979, serving as a military administrator of Borno State under General Olusegun Obasanjo's military government.

Early life
Idiagbon was born into the family of his father Hassan Dogo and mother Ayisatu Iyabeji Hassan Idiagbon on 14 September 1943 in Ilorin, Kwara State. He attended United Primary School, Ilorin from 1950 to 1952 and Okesuna Senior Primary School, Ilorin, 1953–57. He received his secondary education at the Nigeria Military School, Zaria between 1958 and 62.

Military governor
From August 1978 to October 1979, the military Head of State, General Obasanjo appointed Idiagbon as the military administrator (position now called governor) of Borno State, Nigeria.

Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters
General Muhammadu Buhari made Idiagbon his second-in-command as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985. Described as a thorough military man, he played a key role as the hallmark of Buhari's military government. Idiagbon was promoted to the rank of major-general in 1985.

1985 military coup d'état
After 20 months in power, the military government of Buhari was overthrown by Ibrahim Babangida on 27 August 1985. Idiagbon was removed from his position as chief of staff, Supreme Headquarters, and he was placed under house arrest for three years, after his release he retired to his hometown Ilorin and lived in relative obscurity.

Personal life
On 6 March 1970, Idiagbon married Biodun Idiagbon (née Gamra). They had two sons and three daughters together: Adekunle, Junior, Ronke, Mope and Bola. On 24 March 1999, Idiagbon died under very suspicious circumstances.

PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI HAS FORGOTTEN "LATE MAJOR GENERAL TUNDE IDIAGBON" His loyal second in command during the military days of December 1983-1985 August before General Ibrahim Babangida ( Rtd ) overthrew his government.

Buhari is supposed to honour this military officer for his loyalty towards his government.

IT WAS TUNDE that gave BUHARI GOVERNMENT the bite that made the administration to pull through those difficult days and succeeded in most of its economic and social policies.

NIGERIANS WERE VERY STUBBORN IN OBEYING LAWS AS AT THEN even stubborn till date or today.

IT WAS THE LATE MAJOR GENERAL TUNDE IDIAGBON WHO WAS A NO NOSENSE GENERAL THAT BROUGHT IN STRICT MILITARY DISCIPLINE TO GET NIGERIANS TO FALL IN LINE.

GENERAL TUNDE IDIAGBON ( RTD) MILITARY CULTURE WAS THAT YOU EITHER BEND OR YOU BREAK.

GENERAL IDIAGBON DOES NOT HAVE TIME FOR NONSENSE.

With General Idiagbon (rtd ) guys were respecting queue and behaving themselves compared to the situation now where there is so much indiscipline and corruption in all the level of our national life.

Think about Environmental Sanitation, WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE ( WAI ) ETC
LATE GENERAL TUNDE IDIAGBON ( RTD ) FORCEFULLY MADE NIGERIANS TO FALL IN LINE WITH RESPECT TO DISCIPLINE AND OTHER SOCIAL VICES.

Although the Nigerian Press was critical of the Buhari/Idiagbon administration and the Media especially the newspaper houses fought the Buhari administration accusing them of violating human rights with their hardline policy that comes in the form of decree.

It is on record that the EFCC house in Abuja was named "IDIAGBON House" to immortalise Late General Idiagbon.
However, the Buhari should immortalise him at a higher level.

SEE AKANU IBIAM the former governor of EASTERN REGION, International airport Enugu, Polytechnic Uwana in Ebonyi state was named after him.

The Kwara state government should also Immortalise Late General Idiagbon.

He was in SAUDI ARABIA with his son observing the Hajj when General Babangida with General Sani Abacha plotted a military coup and struck in the early hours of the morning.

Those of us who woke up early that morning heard on our radio the national athem song urshering General Sani Abacha delivering a broadcast on the overthrew of Buhari government.

Report has it that Major General Buhari ( rtd ) was detained at the Benin city Prison by the Babangida administration and it took several months of pleas by northern traditional rulers to General babangida to free General Buhari who lost his mother and want to attend his mother burial ceremony.

GENERAL SANI ABACHA IS DEAD NOW to join Late Major General Tunde Idiagbon that he overthrew.

General Babangida is presently on a wheel chair keeping a date with his maker.

THE REST IS NOW HISTORY.

Happy Post Humous Birth day celebration to this ILLORIN, KWARA STATE BORN Military General.

You are sooo correct! Back then , environmental Sanitation was The REAL deal . EVERYTHING is shut down and everyone troop out to clean all day. Now the Sanitation day is like a 4 hours vacation. Can you IMAGINE how Brave Nigeria was to KIDNAP Dikko in UK , put him in a crate and ALMOST succeeded in bringing him back to Nigeria to face prosecution. The brain behind the war against discipline and corruption in the '83 military junta.

Rumors were rife then that he seldom smiles except on Independence day. Lol

He was obviously murdered in '99 having being touted to be coming back under the the Obj's administration possibly to head the anti-corruption fight.

Everyone knows IBB would have been a goner had Idiagbon not been eliminated.

You may be right, but why has Buhari not been able to do anything to IBB ?

My bro is not only sad but heartbreaking. I was like a year old when they came to power and read much about them later and coupled with what my dad told me. You don't eat biscuits and throw the rap on the floor or urinate anywhere u seem fit else u will regret ever doing it. Even they even chastened the youths to dress well. Looters and drug pedllers never love them cos they made these rogues and saboteurs pay with long jail terms and their lives. The painful aspects is today Indomie generations with dearth of history believed the cooked lies told them by those who destroyed these nation's but hated these duo cause they were called to accountability. Today Buhari can do little cos those who looted have not only secured their loots, but now established media houses, bought the judiciary over and hv foot soldiers of jobless youths to defend them. That why I hate democracy.

This was the main ruler of Nigeria in 1984.

Buhari merely enjoyed the accolades.

Idiagbon never smiled. I never saw him smile.
The first time I'm seeing his family, it's like he taught them all how not to smile, except the wife.

The present indomie generation may never fully understand the role this man played at a time in the nation's history.

Idiagbon was a heck of a man.
He was ten men built into one.
The only officer that attended AFRC meetings without his cap, which infuriated fellow officers like IBB but they couldn't challenge him because you can't stand Tunde if he's annoyed.
You could get shot, up close.

Here is the history.
IBB and Abacha and few others, like Domkat Bali, Vatsa actually carried out the coup in late 83 against the Shagari govt and installed Buhari as President.
Buhari was the most senior officer, that's why.
By popular vote, Idiagbon joined him.

Now, IBB and his guys were into the drug trade by the side and just as much, needed the President and whoever is in charge to look the other way.
For a while, it went on that way until few journalists found out what was going on and began to write about it.
Journalists like the late Dele Giwa.
They began to call out the govt as hypocrites.
Idiagbon was embarrassed because he and Buhari amd some others were clean.
They actually meant to build Nigeria up.
It was the devils like IBB and Abacha and their wives who were money hungry so much as to mess Nigeria up.

So, idiagbon called a meeting.
It was a hot meeting. There and then, he warned IBB and co to stop drug trafficking or he would lock them up or have them shot.
He had verbal exchanges with IBB and it was reported that he asked IBB what has been his major achievements in life, to which IBB replied, " i've participated in all successful coups in Nigeria so far"

Idiagbon laughed him off.
IBB wasn't happy with that. And he began to scheme to topple Buhari and Idiagbon from there.
To make matters worse and to show his seriousness, idiagbon began to arrest their drug traffickers and have them publicly shot.
Quite alarming then were the confessions of these drug traffickers when caught.
Most said they're confused because na the same senior military officers who sent them to sell drugs dey arrest them, so what's going on?

And so, before Idiagbon could make up his mind to fk IBB up, IBB acted faster being the maradonna he was, and led a coup agaisnt Buhari while Idiagbon was in Mecca.
This showed how much he feared Idiagbon because he wouldn't have succeeded if Idiagbon was around.

The rest is history.
Tunde, you remain the best leader Nigeria never fully had.
I respect you, sir.

Sounds like tale but by all intents, true.
If you can assess them, check Newswatch magazine btw 1983 to 1985.
We still have those editions in our family house because my uncle worked as a reporter at Newswatch then.

He always supplied my Dad with latest prints and inside news.
