Ahead of this weekend’s governorship election in Edo state, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning to its officials against collecting financial Inducements from anyone in order to manipulate the outcome of the election.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Independent yesterday, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, who sounded the note of warning said the commission under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is determined to maintain the highest standards in the conduct of the much-anticipated election.

According to him, financial inducements and other corrupt acts are electoral offenses and any INEC officials caught or implicated will be prosecuted in accordance to the laws of the land.

He also said all INEC officials have been given adequate training on how to act professional and maintain ethics of the Commission during the election.

His words “Bribery and corrupt practices are electoral offenses. Any official of the Commission caught or implicated in electoral malfeasance will be prosecuted. We have trained our officials to act professionally and ethically”.

On measures taken to guard against vote buying, Okoye said while INEC has redesigned the polling units to ensure voting secrecy, security agents will also move around the polling units and arrest anyone trying to compromise the process.

“We have redesigned our polling units to protect the secrecy of the vote. No person is allowed into the voting compartment with a camera. Plain clothes security personnel will move round the polling units to check vote buying and selling”.

Okoye who said the situation in Edo is calm at the moment, added that the political parties will sign a peace accord tomorrow. He also said all materials needed for the election have been delivered.

We just finished our stakeholders meeting. Tomorrow the parties will sign a peace accord. The atmosphere is temperate enough and we are ready for the election. The sensitive and non sensitive materials have been delivered”.

INEC is not serious.Yet seasoned RECs who have been well identified in controversial electoral outcome in Kogi, Kano, Bayelsa and Nassarawa are members of the electoral umpires in the Edo Election again?

Were the vote buyers of previous elections prosecuted or convicted? I think until the world ostracise this nation politically, Nigeria leadership will never be serious.

If ballot is counted and results declared in polling booths with the signature of party agents on result sheet, if possible making a video of it, I DON'T THINK IT CAN BE COMPROMISE WITH THESE EVIDENCE

Seriously, it's not possible. It can only be possible in open ballot like that of 1993 election.
Moreso, results are being circulated from polling booths now before general collation and a copy of results l sheet is (must be) paste on the wall.
