OPERATION WUTAN DAJI 2: AIR COMPONENT OF OPERATION HADARIN DAJI HITS ARMED BANDITS’ CAMP, ELIMINATES SEVERAL FIGHTERS AT DOUMBOUROU FOREST IN ZAMFARA STATE

1. The Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has decimated another armed bandits’ camp in the Doumborou Forest area of Zamfara State. The air strike, which was executed yesterday, 13 September 2020, as part of a new subsidiary Operation, tagged WUTAN DAJI 2, also resulted in the killing of several armed bandits belonging to the gang led by the so-called ‘Dangote’. The target was designated for attack after Human Intelligence (HUMINT) reports as well as series of confirmatory aerial surveillance missions indicated that ‘Dangote’ and some of his members, along with their logistics items and rustled livestock, had established a new camp at the southern edge of the Forest.

2. The Air Component therefore dispatched an enhanced force package of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopter gunships to attack the location. The attack aircraft engaged the target area scoring accurate hits and taking out several of the bandits, while some of their structures were seen engulfed in flames. HUMINT sources later revealed that several of ‘Dangote’s followers were neutralized in the air strike.

SDB4 should be on the drawing board.

I think we would be looking at exports and possibly Nigeria's first OPV.

We currently have the capabilities, and if you look at the amount of small vessels we currently have on order from France, Vietnam and Nigeria, it is unlikely we would see an SDB 4.

SDB3 would show greatly our capabilities.

A ship like this FOULADOU, Senegal Navy would be the next likely step.

This one is 58 meters.

I agree. We cannot allow all those naval engineers to down tools and look for other jobs after SDB3. Their knowledge is vital to our ship building industry.Protecting their Jobs should be of National security.

Imagine how the capacity of DICON, NAMVC, Proforce and many other industries both military and civil will be greatly improved if our steel industry was working. Last I heard about ajaokuta was the MOU signed in Russia. Any update on it?

And concerning the rising security challenges in the country, it's high time state and local governments started coordinating and funding local vigilante groups and hunters to destroy emerging criminal organizations while they are still in their infancy. The federal police is severely underfunded and even if they are well funded, they can't cope with the current situation. The military is overstretched and they shouldn't even be concerned with law enforcement. If each local government has its own unit of local law enforcement agents, many of the villages and towns being disturbed in the north would have been able to fight back, at least to some extent. That will go a long way in sabotaging the growth of these organizations. And these local vigilantes and hunters know far more about their environment than any police officer/soldier will ever know.

I think the police has become ineffective, because they have become a money maker for the men in the field and their bosses, what crime are the police kidnappings and robbing people everyday stopping?.
Most of the police are in bed with this criminals, if the police were really policing, most of this major crimes wouldn't have grown out of hand.
The police, have developed a mindset of fleecing the masses, and leaving the military to clean up the consequences, one of the most effective ways to make the police more efficient, is to make the officers responsible for the actions of his juniors. In the military I know officers that were retired based on negligence of duty, over what men under their command did.

Using vigilante and other local groups just shows the incompetence of the police, and what is the surety that this groups don't become too outlandish and power intoxicated, even the CJTF, in the north would become a disaster, after the crisis ends, what is needed is a radical change of the police, more intelligence work of the DSS, stronger boarder control and immigration control.
What is lacking is just the will, nothing else, because if the right thing is done, the police officers won't be making money

It depends on how they are coordinated and controlled.
All levels of government in US have their own law enforcement agencies ; sheriff and police departments at the local level, highway/interstate patrol at the state level and FBI at the federal level. The vigilantes can serve as the law enforcement agencies at the local government level with lesser jurisdiction and authority than state police. If they are well monitored, they will do well. The federal police is just too understaffed and underfunded to work as the sole law enforcement agency in Nigeria. The population and land mass is just too massive. It is because of this that terrorist and bandits are able to carve out territories for themselves in many forest across Nigeria.

Nigerian Air Force JF-17

By the time the JF-17 attains FOC in the Nigerian Air Force, the aircraft would have become obsolete. It's sad, but true.

In my opinion, after these 3 units, NAF should cease any further purchase of this aircraft type, like the F-7, it should be just another stop gap while military planners head to the drawing board for a suitable aircraft type for the Nigerian Air Force fighter fleet.

If not for the threats posed by CAATSA, Nigeria should really be considering Russian fighter jets.

America already has a 6th Gen flying prototype, there are already 1,000 units of active flying F-35s, Rafales, Euro fighters, SU-35s, MIG-35s are constantly been upgraded. In fact the SU-30sm would receive the same radar and engine as the SU-35, we simply should not be flying JF-17s in 2020.

We have not received the Jet yet, but the jet is already obsolete.

I fully agree here and I wonder why we did not at least order the Block III double-seaters.

The JF 17 is a fighter jet that is fit for purpose in our region. None of our neighbours have anything close. It's function is multirole not air superiority. Our air force is a force, not a museum or display showpiece. We don't fly jets but fight with them. Many of our east, south and central neighbours have su27and 3x but can't maintain a fighting airforce with those plane because of the cost, hence when a conflict breaks out they have to hire mercenary pilots and engineers. Really, how many sub-saharan air forces have engaged in as many sorties as our air force has in the last few years? We buy planes we can fly and fight at anytime with; not to pound our chest at on the ground. The Su series are twin engine jets, that's twice the fuel, twice the maintenance cost and a lot of down time.our airforce will struggle with its maintenance with its budget, and most African airforces are grounded with no ability whatsoever because they have it.
Better to fly and fight with a JF17 than have a grounded Su27,3x.

Unfortunately it is this line of argument that has been the bane of our development for a long time.

How does Algeria maintain it's jets?

What sort of political leverage does Nigeria get from buying the JF-17?

You see so many considerations go into buying military equipment, there is a huge reason why Algeria buys from Russia and why Morocco buys from the USA. These reasons are far more important than the Jet itself. Look at Syria for example.

We live in a rapidly changing political environment, we cannot rely on the JF-17 as an asset for the future, it barely lasts for today even.

Our military planners have been smart with military acquisitions, however we need to ditch the JF-17 today.

On a purely technical side, apart from the number of ordinance it can carry for ground attack, which advantage does the JF-17 have over the Tucano for ground attack and ISR?

When you get the answer, this leaves air to air combat as the only advantage that the JF-17 has over the Tucano.

In this area, French Rafales and Mirage-2000D's based in N'jamena completely floor the JF-17.

So again, what advantage does this aircraft actually provide us? It's had to figure out, as it provides no peer to peer capability and there simply is no political coverage.

Countries that have bought the SU-30 in recent years include Myanmar, Armenia, Angola, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

No offence, but Nigeria is not Uganda.

With the Super Tucano in our inventory, we need at most 16 or 18 SU-30s.

The capabilities an SU-30 and MIG-29M brings to the table is at least 10 times that of a JF-17.

Who are we fighting in our region now ? Chad , Cameroon , Ghana . I honestly don' t buy the argument , We should not be buying SU-30 till we can afford it, and maintain it and pay for the upgrades.I am not trying to sound like a know it all but that is what got us into trouble with the Jaguars see as they are rusting and even the BRITS that sold it to us don't even sell the spare parts anymore.
Nigeria bought the jf -17 because that is currently what she can afford , it is that simple, she needs to buy UAVS done , she needs to buy A-29 done, She needs to build up her Special operations commands in ALL 3 services ( ON GOING) . She needs at least 12 helicopters ( ongoing)
One thing at a time, where are the pilots self if she turns around and buys SU30 ? I t takes 1-2 years to master a brand new AIRCRAFT that is new to your inventory.
I beg people take am easy make the Plane land first now Block 1 or 2 or 3. nah small , small. no be one day now.

You are right of course. Nigeria is buying the JF17 for the same reason it bought the J7. We do things for the short term, long term objectives be damned. Strategic thinking seldom seems to enter the equation. We simply like to waste money and other resources.

It is not all about fighting in the region per se. It is very much about showing that you have the capacity to fight and have teeth that can bite. Do you know why countries like DR Congo, Ghana and Cameroon disrespect us so much these days? Mainly because they know we are toothless and lack the economic and military capacity to do much to them.
This wouldn't have happened if our military was massively upgraded, our economy diversified and made stronger in every respect. Soon, as things stand the King of Swaziland will be giving us the middle finger and inviting us to suck his 8ss. embarassed

In 2018 Nigeria tried to buy the Varta APC from Ukraine, however this order has since been cancelled.

We know of the confirmed order of 30 units of ARA II and 43 units of Ezugwu.

Uganda has the SU-30 and the comments about the Pilots would make you weep.
The Planes are not well maintained .
The Pilots are constantly looking to go somewhere else.
Does a Lion worry when it defecates in Hyena territory.
Nigeria needs to build up its critical NAF infrastructure first.
12 A29 Super +
Simulator
NAF established 1964
First procurement to come with Simulator
For 55 Years NAF had 3 Air Commands
2015 -2019
Established 2 Commands including critical Special Operations Command 2018
Need to build up and maintain these Commands.
2020
NAF has just given the okay to establish a base only 203 for UAVs .
NAF needs to build and maintain
You cannot just buy “ Christmas Gifts” without any thoughts to build and Maintain.
For 40 years those Army HOS sobs didn’t maintain our C-130s.
One had barely passed the 10,000Mile mark
2015-Present has seen the NAF working in its 3rd PDM.
Let us walk first before we start to fly ( No pun) Intended .
Last but not least unless Nigeria wants to fight the collective might of the 28 Nations of NATO.
Best not to worry about engaging in French Piloted Aircraft.
Looking forward to the Infrastructure that will costs $36M and will house the A-29s
