Absolutely everything falls and rise on LEADERSHIP.

Someone asked a very important question up there which i think has the answers to the problem plaguing our country:

1) Why are People not cutting corners with current telcos Airtel, MTN and the likes?

2) Why do bank tellers not just walk into the vault and take all the cash there to their houses(of course some have tried and some will still try but the consequences are there...)

3) Why are workers in Private enterprises more responsible with their deliverables than their counterparts in Public orgs?

4) Why is it that Nigerians behave themselves in orderly manner when they travel abroad?

Take a minute to reflect on the above.

It is all about Leadership. It is the responsibility of the leaders to set a very strong tone from the top. It is the responsibility of leaders to put in place controls and ensure that whenever these controls are breached, the appropriate person is sanctioned whoever it is. That is why they are leaders. They are to set the pace.

I remember when Buhari first assumed power, everyone started behaving themselves, some public officials who had stopped going to work early started doing so for fear of what come for the "Iron General", People temporarily stopped asking for bribes in case there were Buhari agents on the lookout. But after 2 months and they saw that everything was "Audio Transparency", they all returned to their normal selves.

In my current place of work, I know there are certain things that if i get myself involved with them, I will be shown the door immediately. No one I beg will listen to me. Because the rules are clear and the standard is being maintained to the highest. You can choose not to follow it but our leadership have made it clear what will happen if you go agaist them

Look, we dont need to push responsibility back and forth.

We need strong leaders. We need leaders who have vision and who have solid exposure and reasoning power and we need leaders who have the desire to create a legacy. All the ones we have there are just stomach-leaders and that is the beginning of our problem.
Thank you for this. That was the question i was asking.

If there are consequences for wrong action people behave.

It is baffling that someone that took 10 billion naira loan and cannot account for it. The person should right now be speaking with EFCC operatives. That 10 Billion can be traced.

Many people do not know there is a direct connection between the missing N10 billion and dollar scarcity.
Let me make it clear to them.

Assuming that the N10 billion was used judiciously for what it was meant for and assuming there is a 10% return on that investment in the agricultural sector. That means N10 billion worth of foodstuffs and agricultural products would be produced and an additional N1 billion in agricultural products.

That means agricultural products and food stuffs worth N11 billion has been created in the economy, that means there will be no need to import agricultural products and foodstuff worth N11 billion, hence the pressure on the Naira is reduced.

That is the loop hole that need to be closed, because there are many N10 billions that cannot be accounted for.

Attacking dorm accounts is treating the symptoms of a bigger problem and would not solve the dollar scarcity problem Nigeria has and will not stop the naira from depreciating.

There are agencies that it is there responsibility to ensure nothing happens to the N10 billions, that is where the focus should be and not saying nigerians are criminals, nigerians are this and that...

If you steal N10 billion in the US, you will be caugth and you will return it, that is the difference.

Let them show sincerity in governance.. and I tell you everyone will align.... it's a mindset... Their sincerity will including cutting there exonbetant allowances, frown against corruption (making it punishableand enforcement), investing in education and the likes

The greed began from them and if nigerians involve in illicit act should stop... It must begin with these leaders....

They are the bane of corruption...

I think it is a game of numbers, businesses with many incompetent workers go under all d time. That is why in most establishments the selection process is very rigorous. Other factors beign equal, a business needs more competent and conscientious individuals, like 90%.

In a country like Nigeria where more than 70% are mediocre or ignorant or dishonest or both, it isn't hard to see why things are not working. In the west, more than 70% are skilled, literate and conscientious and things work. Over there ordinary citizens will report you to d authorities if you flaunt rules.

It is not just d leaders, everyone contributes to a better society. Except u want to go back to military rule where people are forced to behave, even that one get k-leg.

Who are the people that plunged the country into the mess we are into today? Are they no longer the same adults?

Is Buhari a youth?

Is Tinubu a youth?

Are all the criminal politicians, including Buhari that messed up this country young people?

Don't get me angry this afternoon.

And if you don't get out of this place now, some youthful anger will descend on your right now.

This is where I would come in. With all due respect to the generation of the adults we are referring to now. They caused the whole mess we are in as a country today. Especially the educated ones among them, after enjoying free education and juicy jobs. They felt their children must enjoy same so they try to do everything by all means to make it happen. Even when there are not fit/merit the position.

The people before them at least did something, they fought for independence even though I feel we were not ripe for it when it happened. Now the generation of 50 and above adults what value have they inculcated in their immediate generation after them? No value at all.

They messed everything up.
I agree with you

These leaders, NASS and presidency you're talking about did not drop from another planet. They are from amongst the citizens. They are Nigerians. Their greed and lack of sincerity is characteristic of Nigerians. A greedy and corrupt will always give rise to greedy and corrupt leaders. Greedy citizens cannot all of a sudden become honest because they've won election.

It's not today NASS started earning ridiculous salaries. It was Nigerians who made the laws for such ridiculous salaries in the first place. We've had about 7 different sets of Nigerians in that NASS, yet they've all refused to cut down the outrageous salaries.

The truth is that the only reason most Nigerians are pretending to be against the outrageous salaries is because it's not them or their family members that are benefiting from it. Once they or their relatives enter the NASS, they become happy and call it sharpness. Many of those in NASS today were once among the citizens condemning it.

Nigerian don't hate corruption. They only hate corruption when they're not the ones benefiting from it. The moment it starts benefiting them, they call it connection. The only reason majority of Nigerians have not stolen billions of government money is lack of opportunity. The moment they get opportunity, you'll see their true colors. Hence, it is everywhere, from the top of government down to the local government clerk and the policeman on the street. All are corrupt, and they are not from another planet, they are all our friends, relatives, and neighbors, they are all Nigerians.

Take election rigging from example. We all like to point at the government. But I remember an incident where election for the excos for a residential estate was rigged. SUG elections in universities are rigged. See Nigerian Medical Association election below. They are not thugs oo, they are well educated medical doctors. They too will say buhari and inec is the problem when they cannot do ordinary association election peacefully.

It is all High-Spirited discussion going on here.

Most Nigerians work around with Low Self Esteem. This i think is the Grand cause of Most of the problems in this Nation.

It is Low self esteem that is Making people to think that the acquisition of wealth Brings Everlasting Happiness. Thereby, Making many to try to become wealthy by hook or by crook.

If people should know their worth, there won't be issue like a FIRS senior Manager trying to bypass an ordinary Electricity meter.

If people truly know themselves for who they are. there won't be issues like people wanting to be paid(bribed) before they could render the services they are being paid monthly for.

It is So sad, that our Educational system is in a comatose. The people that are in charge and the ones waiting to take over are not to be trusted.

What i think of the solution is...

There should be Dedicated Subjects in Primary/Secondary schools, Which should hamper on Improving/Promoting High Self Esteem.

And this too should be replicated at the Tertiary Education levels.

This will go a Long way in Building/Improving our Value Orienting System.

Then, we can say we are close to dealing with the foundation cause of most of the problems we face as a nation.

I'm hopeful this Nation will be Great again Someday.
Honestly

This is the best comment

Low self esteem breeds the lust for materialism and consumerism

Agreed that everyone contribute to the society...

The point is..where does this actually begin...?? If we are to be sincere with ourselves...

A man cheating prepaid and senator or persons stealing 10 billion ..
Which of this will the economy feel its impacthuh..

This is no means to lessen crime eventhough in the court of law the punishment of crime is ranked...

We must begin from the root...not the leaves....

I know it isn't fissible but one way is to turn our plethora of churches into rehabilitation centers for mass reorientation of d populace.

It would be impractical to adjust our leaders given the power they hold (real and unreal). Whatever needs to be done should start from d ground up.

Anyone still in doubt about CBN's recent narrative on Dom accs should read these.

In summary, inflow payments going into dom accs are to be verified as legitimate before crediting the benefactor, and no transfer of funds from one customer to another. Only signatory to a dom acc can deposit funds in it.
For more info read the update on CBN website.

Any bank other than GTB.
They are currently implementing an extreme policy denying withdrawals and so forth claiming that its mandated by the CBN, but as at yesterday other banks are still permitting withdrawals and transfers.

It's a normal thing, Nigerian banks like to take advantage of uninformed customers, if you try to perform a dom acc transaction at your usual branch and they don't, request to see the manager, confront him and tell him to sort your needs inline with CBN's narrative, if he doesn't send an email to the CBN, the CBN is still very active in such matters.

But most bank managers will prefer to solve your problems than you write to the CBN if it's inline with the current policy or refer you to a branch that can resolve any issues.

Apply education and wisdom.

THE VALUE OF THE NAIRA: A REVELATION THE VALUES OF NIGERIANS!

A currency's value is what is can fetch those who use it as a means of exchange!

Those in America use dollars and those in the UK use pounds sterling. Emiratis use Dirhams and Indians Rupees. Nigerians therefore use the Naira.

The Naira today, is equivalent to 600 units to the GB£ and 500 units to the US$.

Though we are quick to lampoon the Naira as worthless, but let us compare how much value each of these currencies equivalents fetch their owners/holders, within their borders?

In the US, a dollar ($) may not buy you more than a small bottle of water, while N500 will buy you a pack of 12 of the same bottles of water in Nigeria!

A pound (GB£) may not buy you even a small loaf of bread in London, but in Lagos, N600 will buy you and your partner, breakfast for 2, consisting of one N250 big loaf of bread, 4 fried eggs and 2 bottles of water!

Days ago, I bought 50 pcs of medium size oranges from the Ketu fruit market for N1,000, that's just $2! I bought 3 pineapples for N500 ($1)!

A litre of fuel costs N160 in Lagos, but cost $0.86 (N430) in New York! While I know people who pay cad1,700 (N500,000) per month for their glorified room and parlour self-contained in Ottawa, that is what a friend pays in 6 months, for a 2 bedroom apartment, with separate toilet, bathroom and proper kitchen, in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi!

So why do Nigerians make so much noise over the value of their currency, when it still fetches them more value than the other currencies that they pitch the Naira against? The answer is simple: the "values" of Nigerians!

While Nigerians reacted with consternation at Dino Melaye's obnoxious display of his stolen wealth, the average Nigerian behaves exactly like Dino Melaye! From the man on the streets to the Churchpreneurs who claim to represent God!

They produce nothing, but want to flaunt everything!

Someone lamented to me about his wife's tenant, who has failed to pay N120,000 rent, for nearly a year, but slaughtered a ram and made festivities, worth N150,000, during the last Moslem "Ileya" festival!

Ask me what the idiot produces? Zilch!

Had this same debtor taken the N150,000, wasted on the one day feasting to the market, it will be more than enough to set up a fried Yam, sweet potatoes, Akara business, that can net him N300,000 monthly, and take him out of poverty and debt forever!

So, because Nigerians are unproductive at home, but consume from used clothes, to fake hair and eye lashes, to even PMS, from the abroad, they keep whining about the value of the dollar/pound-sterling against their currency.

There are universities in Nigeria, and I had my education entirely in Nigeria! So, if I chose to send my children abroad, what is the headache of the government in my personal decision, should the currency in their country of choice proves unaffordable to me? Who send me?

My personal definition of the problem with Nigeria is that, the policies of the State are manipulated to suit the indulgences of certain classes of Nigerians, who feed fat on the miseries of the masses.

Government resorted to importing fuel because some privileged Nigerians criminally destroyed our refining capacities. Rather than punish them, we put the punishment on Nigerians.

Government "subsidized" the same imported fuel, to create artificial opportunities for some privileged people to loot our treasury, under the artificially created system of "subsidies".

These Nigerians and their fraudulent economists should stop fooling themselves about the poor exchange rates of the nation's currency. 95% of the citizens of this country need food, water, Medicare, etc, obtainable in Naira!

If some useless, lecherous and unproductive, yet entitled, vanity flaunting elements like Dino Melaye, need foreign currencies to feed their insanity, what has that got to do with Nigeria?

If you want to indulge in the zero nutrition Orange, imported from wherever and sold at times ten that of super tasting Oranges from Benue, must Nigeria care about your price plight? Who send you?

If you chose Pizza over Aboki freshly cooked spicy bread and eggs, please find enough Naira to indulge in your borrowed Italian taste. #KokanAye!

This argument over our poor currency is a lie of the elite to pass their problems as everyone's!

Days ago, I made a 4 litre bowl of cooked beans (enough to feed at least 8 adults) from a N200 ($0:40) measure of beans! Add another N500 ($1) worth of sweet potatoes, and you have a super nutritious meal for 8 adults!

That's less than $3 in total, N1,500 (including the costs of other stuff like onions, peppers and oil), to feed 8 adults?

Before you complain that the Naira is weak, tell me what you need the foreign currencies for, and #Eruobodo will show you how you and Dino Melaye are related!

Of course everyone was harassing the manager at the branch I was at yesterday. Generally people who operate domiciliary accounts are the least likely NOT to know what to do in such situations. Some were paid out.

Just look at what CBN has caused by the low rate of TB nowadays... For a second I. Thought I was on the politics thread of nairaland lol
There is actually a thin line between economics and politics. That's why we have political economy. That's what we are now doing as government has decided to reduce discount rates for treasury bills.

Please i need urgent help, which bank can I open dom account with? I have some dollars with GTBank bank and i cannot withdraw it.

Am thinking of going for standard chartered or zenith.

GTBank is a full mess. For now, am leaving my money with them until they come down with their stupid law. I will lose over 300k going by their rules. So they should hold on to it for now.

Who knows any bank branch in Abuja where I can initiate a Western Union transfer out of Naija?

My GTBank dorm account is not an option. The charges are annoying.

At the bolded: what??!
And this whole article was written by someone economically illiterate especially w.r.t their comparisons of purchasing power and earning power.
This is 2020 Nigeria, not 1970's Cambodia, once your economy is open external factors influence it.
The article is written by someone who does not know what he is saying

NGN more valuable than the USD, ?

Let's look at the income side

There is a proven stat

That roughly 2% of account holders

Take note; not Nigerians
Account holders
.that have up to N500K bulk sum

That's one
Two
Moat Nigerians cannot boast of a N200k monthly income
Even professionals

When doctors and nurses and accountants are earning the equivalent of what blue collar workers will reject in Britain
That's when you know how useless the currency is

You say things are cheap and on that basis, the naira has more "weight?"
What will you say about the vietnamese dong that is far weaker than the NGN and can buy you more in Vietnam

Does that mean that the Dong is more valuable than the naira?

The only part of the article where I believe he is correct

Is where he talks of our lack of productivity
That one is a big stain on our country.

But as for the rest of what he said
That's crap

There is an economic underpin called CHOICE

The more elbow room for choice you have
The more viable and sound an economy is

If he chooses to eat or buy all that crap he listed
That's his choice
But others who choose to buy other stuff
That's their choice too

Economic layman trying to sound smartundecided
