Earlier thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6129236/visa-ban-dont-disrespect-nigeria#94070747

…says it is our right to determine who enters our country

…your response on visa ban surprised us

The United Kingdom, has said it was taken aback by the recent response of the Federal Government that it would consider disrespectful of the sovereignty of Nigeria, for any outside authority to sit in judgment over the conduct of its citizens and apply punitive measures such as visa restriction, unilaterally.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, who spoke during an orientation programme for people with disability seeking Chevening scholarship opportunities in the United Kingdom, said the United Kingdom absolutely respect the sovereignty of the Nigerian Government and it welcomed the fact that the Nigerian Government were following up on any violence.

Laing further said the issue of visa restriction on perpetrators of electoral violence was the United Kingdom’s visa policy, adding that the Government of the United Kingdom can determine who travels to the country.

“It is our visa policy, the UK, and we can determine who comes to the UK. So, that is a non sovereign right.

“And all we are saying is that in line with Nigerian policy, that those who commit violence or who incite violence, there may be an implication for that person when they apply for a visa in the UK.

“So, I think it is actually completely consistent with the Nigerian policy. This is our visa policy, but obviously, it is for Nigeria to determine how they deal with these perpetrators in Nigeria,” Laing said.

Recall that the United Kingdom had barely a day after the United States imposed visa restrictions on election offenders in the November, 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa States elections, said it will impose visa restrictions on those involved in violence during the last Saturday Edo governorship election and the October 10, 2020 Ondo State gubernatorial election.

Following the threat, the Federal Government, in a statement by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, said it took note of the concerns of some of its partners, specifically the United States and the United Kingdom governments regarding the elections in Edo and Ondo States.

The Government also noted that both the United States and the United Kingdom expressed intention to take punitive measures against those they decide will be involved in what you termed as ‘undermining democracy.’

The Government further said there were ample provisions in its laws to sanction violators and perpetrators of electoral violence and fraud, adding that it would be considered disrespectful of the sovereignty of Nigeria for any outside authority to sit in judgment over the conduct of its citizens and apply punitive measures such as visa restriction, unilaterally.

Asked if the United Kingdom will heed the Nigerian Government’s response and drop such plans of imposing visa ban on the individuals, Laing further said she was surprised with the response of the government.

Laing recalled that prior to the 2019 general election, the Nigerian Government welcomed its policy, adding that maybe the government probably assumed that its policy applied to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) only.

“I am surprised in the way they said this because before the last election, they welcomed our policy. Of course, they probably assumed it applied to PDP individuals.

“This is not about which party is. It can be from any political party or indeed, just an ordinary individual who is not a member of a party.

“So, it has nothing to do with party politics and I will hope the Nigerian Government will see us as supporting them. All we intend was just a peaceful elections,” Laing also said.

On the award of Chevening scholarship to Nigerians, Laing disclosed that many Nigerians had benefited over the years, putting the numbers in thousands.

“Because the programme has been running for a long time and in this year, we are sending 49,” Laing stated.

it won't make them sensible as long as they still have other places to go to. They can go to China, Singapore, UAE, turkey, even the Caribbean. They will never have sense until the whole world bans them from coming to their countries.
Let me ask you, since the lockdown began in March, have they improve on any hospital in Nigeria?

Now you realized that your leaders value access and their assets in foreign lands to conducting free and fair elections in the country.
If you have functioning laws for election offenders, why are you asking the US and UK to remove the ban, you should be happy that they are adding an extra layer of retribution for election offenders.
For the fact that the presidency is sending delegations and replying to the ban (by US & UK) only goes to show that they are guilty of SELECTION FRAUD. A clear conscience fears no ACCUSATION, abi?

Even the UK is surprised at the foolishness of this government. Every country can decides who enters their country, as for this one, they said perpetrators of electoral violence won't be allowed into their country, so why is the Nigerian govt crying

Imaging, if I am one of these people in Nigerian government, I will actually be feeling really ashamed and embarrassed! Just listen to how things are being explained to them as if they do not understand simple English, what is the meaning of sovereignty?
If you think you can govern your country as you like, no problem but we can also decide who enters and who does not enter our country.
The UK seems to continue, "if you don't like our decision then do not come to our country for medical tourism and educational adventure for your children again"!

In addition, any property linked to them should be seized.
EU should follow suit, rather than ban ordinary Nigerians, they should start visa bans from politicians, only then will they be forced to do the right thing.
Just one treat delivered the first free and fair election in this country, how much more when they start imposing the treats, the west surely knows what to do to help fix Africa.

This is what you see when you have to contend with APC hypocrites. The UK and other foreign nations must keep this visa ban policy up, perhaps, it will keep our politicians on their toes.

It's not enough to persuade them when the stakes are high. If the choice is between having political power and the wealth it brings on the one hand, or losing access to this via free and fair elections on the other, a lot of politicians will choose the former even if it means visa ban. They can also still fly to Dubai, Australia, Monaco, the Caribbean, etc

While reading this I honestly thought it was a sourceless write-up possibly to denigrate APC and make them look petty. I was shocked to my marrow dat of a truth d UK were actually explaining in details to dia Nigerian counterpart d interpretation of their Visa ban policy and how it's unrelated with their sovereignty claim. If d Nigerian State know d level of awareness IPOB has created b4 d world Powers about d Injustice and misgovernance going on in this contraption, they would have allowed Biafra go already

If you think they are doing to help the Nigerian masses you are deceiving yourself. They ban those that incite election violence. What about those that embezzle millions and are going to invest it there?
