If your Genotype is AA, Do you know you are very susceptible to Malaria? by illicit(op):
I didn't know my correct genotype until I was going for NYSC and had to do series of tests from a govt hospital ( EKSUTH)

I knew I always had occasional bouts of malaria spells while growing up which due to my ignorance I thought was some sort of plague.

Even when I knew I was AA I still couldn't establish the connection until I got to my PPA and was ill. The VP had to take me to a clinic. He being a biology teacher asked me on the way what my genotype was and I told him AA. He clicked his tongue and then he asked me if I have always had malaria occasionally, I said yes .

Then he told me to always try my best to avoid mosquito bites that my genotype (AA) and malaria parasites are unfriendly.

At the clinic, the same thing was said to me after the same questions and answers.

I had always thought that being AA means some sort of immunity but malaria happens to be the downside according to statistics

lol. The thing is,AS genotype hardly fall ill with malaria. This is because the malarial parasite would only commit suicide when it gets in contact with such a person because the individual's red blood cells have irregular shape-because of the sickle cells-compared to the circular shape of RBC.
AA genotype is not like the AS counterpart.because its red blood cells are all normal thus giving to malarial parasite normal edges to attach to the red blood cells and survive.

Sorry for your constant malaria bouts. Try as much as possible to avoid it's vector.

Its not just AA, but AA combined with A+

My siblings who are AA/O-ve hardly have malaria while me that is AA/A+ treat malaria almost regularly even when I use Mosquito net and Insecticide.
