Amokachi: I Don’t Regret Not Winning Africa Player Of The Year Award

Legendary Nigerian striker Daniel Amokachi says he does not regret missing out on the Africa Player of the Year Award during his playing career.

Amokachi came close to winning the award in 1995 and 1996 but finished in third place on both occasions.

Current Liberia president George Weah won the award in 1995 while Nwankwo Kanu beat Amokachi to the title in 1996.

When asked if he regrets not landing CAF’s best individual award ,during his question and answer programme ‘The Bull’s Pit’ on Brila FM on Monday, Amokachi said: “Definitely not. I would have been honoured to have won it. I was blessed to have played football during the best of generations and anybody that won it deserved to win it, that’s just the truth of it.

“Somebody like Jay Jay Okocha that didn’t win it who is Daniel Amokachi to complain.”

And when asked between him and Okocha who was the better player, the 1994 AFCON and 1996 Atlanta Olympic games gold medal winner said:”When it comes to art and guile I’m far better than him but when it comes to quality of football of course Jay Jay is above me. It’s not a hidden thing or pride, it’s about saying what is real.”

What does Amokachi mean by the word "art and guile"

Still waiting for opportunity to phone in to that Amokachi’s programme and ask him whether he knows how popular he is in Turkey.

I was holidaying in Turkey last year and almost every adult (40 years and above) appeared to know him. Once they knew I’m from Nigeria, the next thing is “Ehhh, Nigeria? Amokachi, good player; Okocha, good player; Uche, good player”.

I almost ate free food because of Amokachi at one restaurant as the attendant was reverring me as if I was Amokachi’s brother. I met another man at the mosque and he was practically begging me for photograph just because I was from Amokachi’s country.

I wonder what these guys will do if they met Amokachi himself. Mob him?

To think these guys played football in Turkey over 20 years ago. And they are still this popular. Or well, maybe I have been meeting Besiktas and Fernabache fans.

This people saying he said the truth are silly. Amokachi is better than Okocha. Amokachi was very very good. I believe he is just being humble. Okocha is better in only show your self aka unnecessary skills and dribbles but Amokachi could dribble ,pass and he is a very good finisher.

Have had similar experience with an Algerian, Egyptians and Saudis.

The Algerian man knew almost all Nigerian players of 1994 from the top of his head, even more than myself.

But this Amokachi experience in Turkey was the one I found most amazing.

The issue is that that generation played football with so much finese that its difficult to forget them. Even if they lost they were still impressive. Up till now i dobt see a Nigerian midfielder that can pass like Oliseh or dribble like Okocha or be as creative as Kanu and its over 20 years
