What caused the Tulsa Riot

The Tulsa riot erupted in the city's all-Black Greenwood district on May 31 and continued through the morning of June 1, 1921. It was triggered by the arrest of a 19-year-old Dick Rowland, an African American shoeshiner, who worked in the white downtown business area of Tulsa. He was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a 17-year-old white elevator operator, Sarah Page, at the nearby Drexel Building

The riot broke out after an article on the incident was published in the Tulsa Tribune afternoon newspaper, which also said on its editorial page that a lynching was imminent.

Albert Broussard, professor of history at Texas A&M University who has taught courses on race relations, including the Tulsa Race Massacre, for four decades tells USA TODAY there is no evidence putting the death toll higher than just over two dozen. Broussard, who is a co-author of American history textbooks, says the notion that 300 or more died is "greatly exaggerated" and that it is highly unlikely after all these years that any mass graves will be located.
