Hello everyone. So my question today is:

Will having a traditional wedding disqualify is from getting the K1 Visa? My parents are insisting on a traditional wedding since they won’t be available for the white wedding when we eventually go to the US. So can we have a small traditional ceremony to make up for that. What will be the result of that? Does the embassy regard traditional wedding as being married?

I was moved to respond to your question so that you don't jeopardize your visa chances of approval.

My sincere and technical advise to you is not to do any form of traditional marriage before you enter the U.S. on K1. If you conduct the marriage, it is not technically advisable to hide it from the VO since terms of your visa is against any form of marriage before you use the visa. If you hide and they find out during your interview, point of entry or later in the U.S. You have technically commuted a visa fraud and can lead to a bigger problem for you and your spouse. Lieing or hiding is not permitted or tolerated in U.S. immigration process.

If you conduct the marriage and tell the VO, it is the VO's discretion to deem you married or not. There is a 50% chance the VO might deem you married. If that happens, your visa will be denied and the K1 petition be sent back to USCIS to expire. It is not advisable to take this risk because many people have been denied K1 in the past based on deem married.

You can conduct traditional marriage after you have your advance parole. This will be after your wedding in the U.S. and you have filed for adjustment of status.

Wish best of luck !

Hello Gudnexvincent01,

He should get that information from the officials, when he gets the Biometrics done. Many things have changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

@Coquinoqui,

Okay. I believe it's advisable to show them all the information in regards to any kids you have, including the child's birth certificate.

Also, you can take along your Bachelor's degree certificate. Make sure you also take along photocopies of all your original documents.

They will only view the originals and then you can give them the photocopies, if they wish to collect them.

Cheers!

Thanks man yes I will take my son birth certificate with me. But I was referring to bachelor certificate of single or certificate of no marriage. Do I have to present this in my interview? Although its not a requirement but you never can tell. What do you think
Cheers!

Hi Fam!!!

I hope everyone is fine and safe, especially our members who are in Naija? A quick update on my case, I got a mail from USCIS yesterday for my interview. However, the date they gave me didn't really favor me as my wife is away on active duty and will not be back before the interview date. I went to the local office today to explain the situation and also showed them a written letter from her command stating that she will be away between the month of October to November. After taking a look at it, the case officer I met placed a call, then came back and told me to still come for the interview with all the necessary documents and supporting evidence. If they still feel the need to contact her, they will. So I hope everything works out, wish me luck. Cheers!!!!

congratulations on your approval, only Lagos consulate handles k visas, interviews are not happening at the moment following the shutdown due to the pandemic, hopefully they'll resume that soon, my interview for April 2020 was cancelled and we've not been rescheduled yet, all the best to you

From what I have been reading on the tread, I think fiance visa stands a chance in this ban period because it is not even considered as an immigrant visa. Whereas spousal visa is considered as an immigrant visa which is affected by the ban.

Recently, F1 students have been able to book appointments and have their visa interviews already. Also dates are now available for B1/B2 in Lagos, I guess for January.. so I believe appointments for k1 visa should be
Made available soon too. Cheers!
