Freelancers especially Nigerians keep on short selling themselves to their own hurt. They keep themselves in poverty with their own hands.

I go through freelancing sites esp fiverr and I see many tedious and technical tasks being advertised for pennies. Python jobs for $15 and even $5.

Freelancers on desperation to land a job will quote lower than the amount the buyer originally put on the job request. This makes buyers believe they over quoted for the job and their subsequent request then comes at a very low quoted budget.

At the end of the day, the stupid freelancer suffers it. Remains in poverty because he/she will work 24/7 and at the end of the month has little to show for it.

Experience has taught me that it is more better for a seller to do one $150 job a month than 10 $20 jobs a month. In the former, you have enough time to focus on learning new skills, developing yourself or even pursuing another hussle.

A buyer will advertise a request of $50, choose you for the job only to come back and tell you someone offered something way lesser. In most cases they come back telling you the seller messed up the job and they had to cancel (seller looses; bad rating n cancellation).

Most of the tech jobs you do for pennies, the sellers re not even the end users, they resell at exorbitant prices cashing out up to 1000% profit.

I scan freelancing sites and I see skilled task that will take 1 week being advertised for $30.

Fiverr has even noticed the trend and relegates sellers with low price per order to the last pages. (they are looking money by your actions too).

When I was new to freelancing, I do almost any task for $5, $10 or $20. But I was frustrated when I work day in and night out but no tangible savings.

I learnt from Mr. Physics here, dude does 4 or 5 tasks a month and cash out over 10 times what I made from doing 15 tasks a month.

This is really awesome. Thanks for sharing.

So what you are advising freelancers to do is price themselves at their real value.

Using yourself as an example, what service do you offer, what's your price range, how long does it take you to complete the job, and how many jobs on average do you get per month?

I once approached Mr. Physics. I couldn't afford him. Does he mentor you? Would you be willing to mentor someone else?

Keep on improving your skills no matter the niche you are in ; writing, graphics etc.

Overlook penny jobs because they will drain you and believe me buyers that bring $5,$10 or sometimes $20 tasks are the problematic ones. They are on freelancing sites to exploit and do not look back when dropping a bad review.

I have messed up some jobs where the buyers understood, came down and guided me on how to do the tasks or even overlook the money. These are high buyers (above $100 per task). DO NOT TAKE JOBS YOU CAN'T DO OH!!

But all the problems I have encountered on freelancing sites were from penny buyers.

The bottom line is that, do not be scared to quote that high price for that buyer. If they can't afford you, they should look elsewhere. Believe me at the end of the month you will end up with an improved income and time to acquire new skills.

My dear i freelance on upwork,I regisered on fiverr last year, but when i saw $5 jobs.. i just left the account and dissapeared. then again i decided to try fiverr just this month, for the first time, i saw gigs for 5$ i almost ran mad, cause i charge quite high on upwork.. But i decided not to run away this time.. Created my gigs starting at 100$ each wtih extras totaling upto 300 per single video job.. I thought maybe High prices may not get me anything. But real clients, are the ones that dont pay peanuts.. I landed my first on october, $150.. did it and claimed my money, client came back again, this time i told him 200$, client paid.. Got another told me 200 euros, i gave him my price.. we landed at 412$ for 40 sec of video.. completed job, client left me additional tip of 28$.. got my 4th job within october for 150. that is the one i am doing now.
So my fellow guys, this thing my brother above said is true.. those 5$ are the most problematic.. they will want you do do everything, and if you refuse they will give you very bad rating on mere 5$ job.

This is a known truth in every business. Premium clients don't bother about your price and won't scrutinize your effort.

But when you set your price low, you'd attract poor people, while giving the impression that you're not good enough to the prospective high paying clients.

Just know your value.

Your post inspired me to post an interesting experience I had on the market place.

I once stumbled on a buyer's request with the normal highest quality demands, premium gig. He listed the gig for $5( meaning it was an open bidding). From my experience of handling a previous project like such. I made an offer for $300 and made reference to my previous work which happened to be for a top government agency in his country (He's Australian).
Probably his country's sentiment played in my hands and he was delighted to offer me the job.

The interesting thing was when he tried negotiating with me, he showed me offers made by other sellers (Indians, Nigerians, Pakistanis) for the same job at $20,$10,$40 etc. I asked him why he didn't consider them knowing fully well the job can't be done at such prize. He said it was a waste of time going for those lowballers.

He said in most cases they end up wasting his time with quack delivery. Specifically said Nigerians will take the job at such ridiculous prices only to come back and beg to raise the price while the gig was running.

I felt ashamed of my country men . I have met very rich company execs on fiverr some of whom I have become friends with and even video chat on whatsapp. These guys can pay top $ for a job.
If you're good at what you do, don't under sell your work.

@Barryseal I don't know if I'm the only one that feel uncomfortable if any client demand for sample of the same work he/she wants you to do.

I became comfortable with refusal of showing FULL sample of my work to clients before the order for my service, when a client demanded for a sample of work he wanted to order (I have done that particular job 3 times), I showed half of the previous work I did, but the client refused ordering for my service because I didn't showed FULL sample. He went ahead to another seller. I was surprise to see him messaging me back with the exact sample of service he needed.

The work was having a watermark (I guess it's a seller's work). He instruct me to replicate the work exactly the way it is and just remove the watermark with a lower price. I rejected the price he wants, I gave him my own price and told him time for delivery but he wanted it urgently.
At last he ended up paying more than what I normally charge for a fresh service he needed.

I don't know if I'm the only one that don't feel comfortable giving FULL sample of my work when client demands it.
