LOOTING OUR HEROES PAST: Awolowo’s iconic glasses ‘stolen’ from statue

Seven days after Lagos government declared a curfew to curb the looting and destruction across the state, the glasses on Obafemi Awolowo’s statue in Ikeja are still missing.

Hoodlums had hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state, unleashing violence on residents and destroying public and private properties.

Vehicles, automated teller machines, traffic lights were vandalised, and not even Awolowo’s statue was spared during the looting, as his pair of glasses are yet to be found.

Awolowo, the premier of the western region from 1954 to 1960, is known for his unique round-shaped glasses.

Akinwunmi Ambode, former governor of Lagos, in September 2017, unveiled the 20-feet statue located on Obafemi Awolowo Way close to the Lagos Television (LTV) junction in Ikeja.

Ambode had said the monument was erected to celebrate the legendary achievements and contributions of Awolowo to the development of the country.

Below are photos of the statue with and without the glasses.

Arrrrrrrh

Useless youth without focus. It really baffles me the way some Nigerians have hijack this protest for their own selfish and wicked desire.

Unimaginable !!! sad

Taking the eye glass what can you use it to do? The other day a guy in zamfara took its post sign. can anybody tell what he will use that to do?

Very insane people everywhere!! undecided

Modify,

Sorry, Taraba people .

This is stupidity on the part of the Hoodlums which shouldn’t happen in human society.

How did they expect Baba to read without his glasses now?

A true nigerian will always finish his rice before touching the meat on it, mind you, he will strip the meat of every grain on it. This is not poverty, it is heritage.

The whole saga of the past 2 weeks made me start having a fear for the uneducated and backward-thinking fellow youths around me. These people are monsters waiting for their cages to let loose. Going to church won't save them.
