captainking: For me, mechanical issues are not the problem. Electrical issues are the major reason some persons do not own some Volkswagen models. I admire the Passat and Jetta but even my 'Rewire' keeps telling me to look away.. 1 Like |

Germans cars are ahead in terms of implementation of technology. The technology you will see in a 2010 asian cars, germans and europeans cars generally have been using the same technology since mid 90s. I like european cars because they do not hide fault. They scream with multple dtc whenever there is a malfunction and based on the fault code the car may decide to go into fail safe mode to prevent further damage to other components. European cars are alive. Imagine, they know when a single bulb or speaker is not working and flag dtc for that. 2 Likes |

Agbabiakara: So true. Used a Jetta from 2011 till date and that car has served me well. Was crazy expensive to maintain when I was servicing with the company I bought the car from but now have a trusted mechanic been using for years now at itire. Part replacements are cheap and the fuel consumption is spot on for me. Plan on using that car for many more years. |

Your rewire can't advice you to buy a car out of his league and stop giving him money If you've the time and interest in DIY you can own any car. uboma: |

cluewebhost: No amount of time or DIY will allow you to work on a Ferrari or even a first-gen Conti GT. So no, not "any" car. |

cluewebhost: Normal humans with tools you definitely don't have access to, and with specialized training. Do some research on cars like the Bugatti Veyron/Chiron. For the Continental GT, you need to take the engine out for most repairs. For some Ferraris, you need to take the engine out just for an oil change. There are cars and then there are cars. 1 Like |

People fabricate most tools, even better now with 3D printing There are tools which make taking out an engine a piece of cake For software people create interfaces that can do what the dealer devices do, simple reverse engineering. Long at its man-made it's hackable. There are people who are ready to spend anything and go any distance to get what they want (especially a DIY'er who can afford a Bugatti or Bentley). There is diy and there is DIY HeavenlyBang: 1 Like |

cluewebhost: Sure, it's possible if you have enough money. Not time and DIY. Even till now, for example, no one has been able to hack the ECU of any of GM's Global B platform cars (C8 Corvette, new Cadillacs, etc). Companies like Hennessey have tried and failed. |
