My journey: Starting Up a Garri Business Empire. [Live Journal]

20th of September, 2020

I've always wanted to do this. Tell my story as-I-live-it, honestly, regardless of the outcome.

My PURPOSE:
Inspire self and others, learn and teach, meet partners and collaborators. Have fun.
My Ultimate goal is to build a Food Import and Export Business.

My REASON is simple: Make More Money.
*Plentyyy Filthyyy Sexyyy Moneyyy*

I earn some. I need more. 'Me too' want to buy Ferraris for my 'Shildrenn'... And I want to do it legally (Veryyy Importanter)

REFLECTIONS:
Everyone thinks the country is now hard like Oluma-Rock. But no one remembers if it was ever soft like Agege-bread.

To survive in Naija, two sources of income is no longer enough. You need at least three. And a fourth, if you want to live comfortably.

You hear stories-that-touch like:
* She has an MBA, but currently learning Hairdressing.
* He was the best graduating student in his Department, but is now a Security guard.
* She read Microbiology, but now sells wig, makeup and bleaching cream on Facebook.
* He got a First Class in Law School, but is currently a Charge-and-bail Lawyer, and part-time Bus Conductor.
* He studied Medicine and Surgery, but now sells face masks and hand sanitizer at Mararaba Market.

The same Government that told your parents, who are farmers, to send you to school so you could get a white collar job, is now telling you, a graduate, to go back to farm.

Fortunately for me, I studied Agriculture.

Yesterday, Sunday (The 20th), I was riding through a town, called Mkpitme, and saw a Garri Distributor (Middleman or Woman in this case) loading up her Vehicle with 100kg bags of White Garri, for immediate transfer to her Market.

I spoke to her briefly, and 'stylishly' lead her to believe I was a potential buyer of her product, so she could be more forthcoming with information.
She says her Selling Price per 100kg Bag was N28,000. It took about "7 small basins" to fill a bag.
She buys directly from the producers (Farmers and Garri processors) in the town of Mkpitme, at far below that price.
Garri is commonly sold in basins (big and small) here.
I deduced that her markets are Onitsha and Yenegoa.

I apologize for the lack of content. I have been indisposed.

REFLECTIONS:
This won't be easy. I've never committed myself to anything like this before; and finding the time and motivation to write this has been... Not so easy.

But difficult doesn't mean impossible.

My respect for Writers, especially those with 9 to 5 jobs, has soared considerably.

I need to dig deeper into my core pillars: Focus, Discipline & Hardwork.

Why should you be apologizing to the rude idiot. You don't need people like that. You need supportive people.

Good job!

UPDATE: 12th October, 2020.

Last week Tuesday, I spoke with a local garri processor about the current situation of the Garri Business.

He was happy to share his views. His garri business is a family affair. They (the family) farms cassava, but not enough to meet their production targets, so they also purchase cassava from other farmers in the area.

They buy loaded *Trucks* of harvested cassava at the local farmers market or directly from a farm. They also buy *Chains* of cultivated cassava plots, harvest themselves, and process.

This year has been particularly good for him and his family. The market price has been consistently high (about 100% higher than previous years), since the onset of the Pandemic in the Country, and subsequent Nationwide lockdown.

They average about 5 to 6 *Big Basins* per week.
A basin of garri is currently sold at about N8,000± in this area.

Pictures below shows his family Processing Cassava (Peeling, Washing and Bagging), before taking to the cassava mill for grinding.

Thanks. But you didn't have to go that far with your reply. I don't think he intended to be rude, just frustrated with my lack of content.
Lord knows, I have my faults.

Thanks again.

REFLECTION:

There's something I have been hesitant to do. I know once I do this, no more excuses. No turning back.

I Must Set my *SMART* Goals.

• I must be more Specific (precise) about what I hope to achieve.

• Make my goals Measurable by using benchmarks.

• Have goals that are Ambitious, yet Attainable within my time-frame (Strive for a delicate balance of these).

• Set goals that are Realistic to achieve with available resources, and Relevant to my long-term objectives.

• Importantly, my goals must be Timebound, have a clear start date and end date.

Easier said than done smiley

But soon....

The common volume measurements used in the Garri value chain, by locals.

• Truckload of Cassava.

• Basin of Garri (Big and Small).

• Bag of Garri (50kg & 100kg).

I will focus on these 3 measures for now.

Happy New Month to Everyone.

GOOD NEWS:

I will be making my "first Garri sales" this week, if all goes according to plan.

Garri Business issa Go... cheesy cheesy

It's a small quantity (2 bags of 100kg Garri) to a family-friend based in Asaba... But I'm absolutely thrilled.

More details later.
