I think this "pull him down" syndrome is a consequence of the nature of our interaction with European exploiters and politics of slavery. The only way for blacks to succeed was to either betray your people or race. In Africa people sold their brothers to curry favours from the white slave merchants and in the Americas, slaves made progress only by betraying other slaves.
