By a brother in
diaspora.
If you don't know how you are blessed, you will think your father's farm is worse than your friend father's farm. Do not be deceived, Nigeria is not the best country but it is a good one.

$1 is #500 and so what?
Let me elucidate from my little experience. Can anyone in USA use $1 for breakfast? No. But in Nigeria #500 will feed you for breakfast and lunch. Majority of people's monthly house rent (self contained apartment) in the USA is $1,000 and above, and that is your own 2 year's rent.

Have you ever paid for insurance before, insurance in US is $280 and that is almost #100,000 monthly.

When last did you pay monthly phone bills? I pay almost #40,000 monthly and if I don't, they are going to block my SIM. Your own MTN can be there for months without recharge.

When last did you work on Saturday and Sunday? This I do compulsorily and on regular basis.

Don't get me wrong, the USA is better than Nigeria, depending on which angle you are viewing it. Do you want to hear the truth? Many people in Nigeria live a more fulfilling life compared to their counterparts abroad. Forget about all the packaging on social media and give credit to the good life you are living.

Do you know why they always come to Nigeria and rush back quickly? Because bills are counting and elongated freedom will put their lives into jeopardy. If you, as a black, attempt to emulate the whites, they will kneel on your neck. Apart from Congo, no citizens in the entire universe enjoy life to the fullest than Nigerians.

You are abundantly blessed but you don't know until you get visa and relocate to abroad, that is when you will know that your 8hrs job in Nigeria with free weekend is awoof. With 8hrs job abroad, you can only pay bills, you will need another 6 to 8 hours to save for the future and plan your life.

The truth is that the grass is green everywhere, it's lack of vision by our politicians and the skewed religious practices (which placed emphasis on miracles) that ascended Nigeria onto a myopic tentacle of complete inertia.

cool

Honestly no developed country is easy, that's why many lazy people turn to crime like drug dealing and internet fraud

What you failed to add is that most Nigerians can't even get Permanent Residency to get a good job or earn as much as that

I always tell people, the worst thing that can happen to a man is to travel to a developed country without a plan to get documented

Cloths are cheap, food is cheap and you get lots of location to snap paparazzi pictures

In USA, people pay for light used ... Here we pay for darkness.
U drive on good roads in USA and hardly go for repairs except servicing. But here, the cost repairs alone due to terribles roads would cover many of your expenses there.
I can list 100 more stuff to shatter your position but no time.

Will you agree we Trade place, let me go and suffer your suffer in USA.

I can't believe someone can write this vacuous post especially in a time like this where Nigeria and all of its MESS has been exposed by the #EndSars protest.

We as Nigerians should be hanging our heads in shame at our international disgrace of a country, not posting sentimental garbage on Nairaland!

I could understand this because I have some people over there. I always say it, that I would only go on vacation overseas.
I don't blame those who would come after u, who know know, no go know.

Just one question buddy - What are you still doing there? Why not come back to Nigeria to "enjoy" the "abundant blessings" yourself?

What's the minimum wage in America in comparison to Nigeria? wink

Minimum wage in America is 1200 dollars (₦600,000)

Minimum wage in Nigeria is ₦30,000... (which is still subjective) some are even earning ₦10,000 a month lipsrsealed

Therefore an American using $5 to buy breakfast can afford it lipsrsealed

If a Nigerian spends ₦200 on breakfast with ₦30k minimum wage,he will become broke after a week lipsrsealed

Case dismissed!

Why don't you comment on each of the points raised NOT to show the folly of his review, but for readers to have a wider view on the subject matter of living overseas and for them to compare and contrast different views on the matter.

Cc: Hathor, Cococandy is the OP's view/experience an accurate representation of the what living in the US is like? Hathor I don't even know which country you reside in but I'm assuming it's the US and if it's not, still share your thoughts.

It’s a continent honestly. Same federal govt but It’s like someone comparing Nigeria and maybe Cameroon in certain areas. Cultures actually differ, weather differs, wages and cost of living differs (and sometimes the difference in pay May or May not make up for it).
The people can be distinctly differentiated by their attitude from state to state. This thing called money is very different from state to state here. I’m very familiar with 3 states here inside and out and finances are very different in each state. Doing the same job.

Each person’s review is subject to their own worldview and experience. That’s why I don’t do all these abroad/naija back and forth on NL.

The ones that have lived here for 50+ years will come and give their own expertise and it will look nothing like your reality as someone who’s also here but not as long as they have been. A blind man will describe an elephant based on the part he can feel.

But some people only work 3 days a week and that’s enough. Your bro’s experience is not general. Not saying he’s lying or saying the truth. That’s just his reality.

Now onions is 3 for #500. How person wan chop breakfast and lunch with that amount?

Lol, you can actually buy a good meal for N500.

Because I don't like to cook, I know good caterers/restaurants who offer nice meals at great prices.

With N500, I can buy pap & akara, boiled yam and egg sauce at one of such restaurants or just by okpa by which will cover breakfast and lunch due it's filling nature.

Re: America Is Not As Many People Think by tensazangetsu20(m): 4:12pm On Nov 05, 2020
Op please which part of Nigeria can someone eat breakfast and lunch for 500 naira. A loaf of bread now is 500 and that won't even be enough for breakfast for a family whereas On Walmart you still see loafs of bread for less than 1 USD. And who is living a fulfilled life in Nigeria? A country with youth unemployment rate of over 80 percent. The world's poverty capital of the world. Why do people continue speaking as if Nigeria is heaven on earth. Nigeria is the worst country anybody can be in.

The unfortunate and unresourceful don't find it easy anywhere in the world, but it's generally worse for the ones who dwell in third world economies. So, you don't hold brief for the fortunate high-net-worth-individuals and gold-collar professionals in any of the sectors of the U.S. economy. The key is to strive to be/remain resourceful and fortunate.

@Faoogoke they will soon come for your head. Some people who hate this country and drags its name and government will hate your write up. Yes they don't have Passport, but they think Nigeria is the worst place on earth,I am not disputing the fact, that might be their own experience, but not mine. The same US some carry on the head couldn't conduct a transparent election, imagine the President rejecting the outcome of an election? The same US that was accusing Nigerian government of election malpractice, placing Visa ban on politicians, smh

It is misleading to translate $1 = N500 Yada Yada.

How easy is it to make $1? What are the opportunities of making the $1? What is the cost/standard of living in relation to ease of making money?

For instance, things were very cheap in Abacha's time. However, to make the money was hell.

It is relatively easy to make money in Lagos; however cost of living is high.

If I earn N500k monthly in Lagos and N250k monthly in Ibadan, I would live a better life at Ibadan.

You are committing the same error as people who say a cleaner earns $12/hr (N6k/hr) as a cleaner therefore, US is paradise.

Again, different values matter to different people. Fulfillment means different things to different people.

Anyways, your thread would hopefully get people who want to travel out or return back to Nigeria thinking.

I just came here to vent. This post is utterly asinine, lacks depth and insane.

500 bucks cannot get you a decent meal in Lagos. Everything is on the high rise these days. From Rent to Transportation, fuel, car, Nepa, maintenance, generator repairs, school fees, Data, airtime, groceries and miscellaneous.

Abi uno dey pay bills for Naija ?

It's just stupid comparing bills... everyone pays bills regardless of the country they're domiciled in, so that's just a useless comparison. I don't mind paying tax as long as I can get access to good roads, water, light, education and HEALTHCARE.

You think 300k salary is eldorado until you need money for cancer treatment and you have less than 3 months to live. That's when you start to create gofundme page, Twitter threads and Nairaland posts asking us to call contribute 1k each.

If you get hit by a car or get shot in Nigeria just drink olive oil and say your last words because e no sure say you go make am. People would rather bring out phones and instagram you all the way to lindaikeji, nairaland and instablog. No human empathy whatsoever and first aid techniques

No country is easy, but NIGERIA is surely close to hell, I can show you vouchers.

Also don't forget, BLACK TAX is real.

As a bachelor, I spend nothing less than 1200 on feeding daily.

Do it for your kids man, that'd be the smartest decision you will ever make. A 5 year old kid is more advanced and sound, than a 15 year old in Nigeria. Environment plays a major role in all ramifications.

Note that once you get married, your life takes a nosedive and the generational poverty cycle is engrained in your family. You become responsible for your wife and kids. Little wonder men die earlier that women because of financial pressure.

It's a rat race, you are either Rich or Poor in Nigeria. There's nothing like middle class again as they've moved to Canada to seek for greener pastures.

If all your politicians and thier kids school and live abroad, build hotels, secure investments and have dual citizenship... You should use your brain to do the math. I use my korokoro eyes see that useless slowpoke called Desmond IDIOT, sorry Elliot for my IELTS center...baba don relocate ein family go Canada via express entry.

You that you are here deceiving yourself that you will build Nigeria (oshey, Bob the builder)... I just dey laugh your stupidity. Passport uno get, Connection uno get, good job uno get, helper uno get, how you wan take make am abeg ?

A country where the number of religious houses supercedes schools, vocational centers, research and development centers CANNOT thrive. It's not rocket science, it's just common sense.

Country of over 60 years Never get sense, na you wan build am abi ? It's just laughable I swear. Nigerians just amaze me everyday.

92% of Nigerians don't have up to 500k as savings.

Only 8% of the population earn above 100k as salary....so what were you saying again ?

People think Nigeria begins and ends in LAGOS. go to neighbouring states to see the level of poverty there...

My hand don dey pain me abeg, if you are comfortable with living a mediocre life please kindly stay back in Nigeria ooo, thank you.

Can you walk around freely at 2 am in Nigeria without fear of getting robbed, killed or policemen asking you for aNyThiNg 4 d B0!z ?

Lastly don't ever compare a first world country with a third world country, don't try it mbok.

It's like living in okokomaiko as opposed to lekki.

Year after year, the country keeps dwindling and poverty level keeps on increasing, Naira no get value again.

A bag of rice costs more than minimum wage but politicians are taking home more than 20M monthly, but you think APC and PDP is the problem. Nigerians need to wake up and smell the coffee wallahi. It's about time.

Look what the EndSARS protest revealed.. politicians hoarding INDOMIE so that they can use for photo ops during the next generational elections and you think Nigeria will get better ?

CORRUPTION is the only thriving industry in Nigeria.

The future is bleak for the average Nigerian, do whatever you can to leave legitimately.

Do you know that the cost of living is cheaper in Lithuania compared to Lagos ?

Emigration is part of human existence, don't let anyone guilt trip you.

Now playing japa by Naira Marley....o connect omo iya mi, everything go soft soonest..MAFO, STAY WOKE.
