good point you make about the American electoral college system. in Nigeria the north won't necessarily have an advantage like that. Buhari despite his northern base was never able to win national elections until he combined with the dominant SW party and some other strong middle belt, SS, SE politicians. for all of nigeria's poor electoral system you can never win presidential elections without some sort of national consensus

electoral college gives small states value, people kept shifting to east and west coast abandoning the center, I'm sure they suspected that it would happen in the future, helps create small equality, democracy is not perfect, see how the north has upper hand in nigeria

Republican and Democratic party in the US are strong institutions and none of them will die out very soon and none will dominate another. They are not like APC and PDP with no ideals and directions. If PDP was a proper party, they would have taken advantage of the present APC f*k ups by now with proper direction towards 2023. The Democrats saw an opportunity in COvid19 and they took it and milked the sh*t out of it to kick out their opposition.

I get his point but I don't see this current republican party restrategising it will actually be the democrats.The republican party is now far right I am sure you saw that they elected Qanon idiots to the house of congress they will become more racist and far right if care is not taken and this will cause a split or crack like what happened in the democratic party with the dixiecrats.

I know that story not too well though it was because of Franklin Rooselvelt that was why the democrats became less racist after the dixiecrats broke out the 1960's the party reformed and became friendly to civil right movements that was when the blacks embraced the party because the party gave them a place.

It is a very long and interesting story.....

Basically, the Southern democrats left their party in the 1960's in opposition to the desergration policies of the then President Johnson ....and found a home in the Republican party which while also pro-desegregration also believed more in 'states rights and small government'(The Southerners had to support desegregration as a result...but that's another story)

At the same time, blacks and other minorities had been heading to the democrat party gradually since the 1930's.(favourable polices). The shift accelerated in the 1960's. They jined the liberal Northerners and others over there.

The UK conservatives are actually older than the democrats.

The Republicans indirectly came from what used to be the Whig party, the Free-soil paty and others, who were united in opposing slavery especially in the new territories the US was acquirring at the time.(The WHIGS came from what used to be the Democratic-republican party...which broke up in the 1840's...the main faction are today's Democrats.)

Even the 2011 election was believed to have been more flawed than the 2007 election.
