Nice thread. I've never seen someone who studied Biochemistry or Microbiology getting employed as a Biochemist or Microbiologist. Yet, our universities keep admitting people into these fruitless departments.

That's because the university is also a kind of business. Whether you get a job or not what concerns them is that your grades are high.

Don't put your 100% mindset on securing job with your course of choice, put it 100% on being an employer of labour, put securing job as the second choice and you will be happy.

This mindset needs to change but know, even lecturers don't lecture students to be independent and employer of labour but dependent and seeker of jobs.

Everything is just upside down.

We need to grow our Enterprise, this is helping developing Nation.

YOUTHS SHOULD THINK THINK AND THINK

This is a very stupid advice.

Advice like this is what is killing the country.

Instead of encouraging people to follow their passion, you are here killing dreams just because you want to focus on employability.

Why will you be focusing people on getting a certificate to get a job meanwhile you and I know that these so called white-collar jobs are becoming quite inexistent as the days go by?

Don't you know that it is much more easier to create a job out of passion (entrepreneurship) than any other thing else in the world?

Instead of encouraging diversity in specialization, you are here talking nonsense.

Bia nwoke m, you should better take your time o!

Nonsense. angry

How would you create a job as a political science graduate (with no capital)?

If your passion is not putting food on your table, is that a passion?

OP you didn't put up a convencing argument. The worst mistake you can make is studying a course you don't like.
I do art work just for fun. Even when I am drained, I can go on and on with the art work till I am happy with my input.
Biochemistry will not make you billions, no course does. Applying those courses will give you all you want.
I am a Biochemist, I am happy to have studied Biochemistry at the University. People should not stop schooling after graduation. Just as you top up your phone, learn to top up your skills to boost your employability.
As a Biochemist, you can branch into all sorts.....GIS,HSE, project management.......list is endless. If you can understand the metabolism is cholesterol ( with full structures), what can you not understand?
I know a young medical doctor who calls himself a health influencer on social media. Give the young medic some time.....he is really doing well! He is applying what he studied.
I am glad you mentioned music as a hot cake..... because of obvious reasons. WizKid, Burma boy, David, Slade, Simi......they are applying what they have and they are enjoying the result.
If you cannot find employment, deploy yourself.
Study a course you like, apply it to the fullest.....you cannot regret it.

I have never seen someone who studied Biochemistry or Microbiology getting full employment. They usually end up as unqualified Teachers in private schools.
Your assertion is very wrong. I studied Biochemistry, graduated officially in 2010, started my first job 2011, switched to NAFDAC in 2012. Left NAFDAC 2017 to pursue my Phd degree in Biotechnology. Many of my classmates are gainfully employed. Don’t limit others by your own limited view. Whatever you study in school, be the best in it.. then know you worth. The grace of God will cover the rest.

According to this Link Nigeria's unemployment rate is 27.1 percent while Nigeria's under-employment rate is 28.6 percent. That is, more than 50 percent of Nigerians are either completely unemployed or grossly underemployed (they get paid little for doing so much).

If you are Nigerian student hoping to further in any tertiary institution of your choice, do not study a course just because you like it.

The only reason why you should study any course should be because of its employability rate. Ask yourself, if I study Biochemistry for example, will I get a job. How many people in the past few years have gotten a biochemistry job?

Jambites are found of going to school to study courses with fancy names but many of these courses won't get you a job or a well paid job after graduation.

Another mistake Jambites make is rushing for Medicine, Law, Accountancy and other courses in their leagues. Why would apply for medicine when you know you'll probably never meet up with the cut of mark? Let's be candid, a high percentage of Nigerian student are average (including myself). It will be absolute foolishness (for a lack of better word) if an average student keep wasting their precious years in search of admission into law.

There are other non-celebrated courses out there that'll fetch you money, Computer Science, Music, Food and Nutrition amongst others fall into this category.

Gone are the days when a certificate guarantees a job. These days what guarantee you a job as a graduate (or anybody else) is connection, your money or your skill.

Most people don't have money to buy a job, most are not connected but most people can have a skill that'll make them financially independent and that is what you as a student should leverage on before becoming a graduate.

Learn a skill that'll fetch you money.

Regards,
A concerned unemployed graduate.

That is not the problem.
The problem why most Nigerian graduate never secured a job is BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT EMPLOYABLE.
try and listen to them, you will find out that most of them only went to school but not EDUCATED.
Na certificate dem dey carry.

I came to read because I am unemployed. grin grin. But truth is most of Nigerian graduates survive with skills learnt outside the University. Our edu system is funny. 80% of courses offered are crap and unemployable.

Back in school, my course mates were about 70 or so. Today only 1 or 2 of us are employed into that field of study (I'm unemployed remember).

I would confidently say I've learnt more on YouTube than the University and that knowledge is what I work with today. Last last everything Na SCAM. Who get DJ Switch number abeg. grin

You borrowed a course from biochemistry.

I did it for 4 years.

Ask yourself, why did you think it took billions of dollar investment, a lot of genius scientists and upto a year to discover a cure with 90 percent efficacy for COVID-19.

Why do you think HIV has no cure today despite the number of seasoned scientists working on it and this project is back by billions of dollars.

The earlier comment you made is a something a child would say. No offense.
so you are trying to tell me you wasted 4 years of your life studying biochemistry and you cant alter the components of spinach to create a super-food ? so what the hecck where you doing for 4 years ? just wasting away in class snoring ?

as for covid 19 and HIV those things are not what you think they are and that is why there can never be a cure for those things. these things exist naturally in all humans without causing destruction. however when the electromagnetic frequency field surrounding you, which is your immune system, when that field is diminished is when these opportunistic pathogens that occur naturally in all humans start to go on a rampage. my point being there can never be a cure. the way to get it under control is by electromagnetic field alteration or electric foods ( both of which services I offer to my clients ). see ? you spent 4 years of your life learning nothing. now you are here wasted cheesy

Why would one study political science because of passion only to become a farmer post graduation because they needs to make ends meet.

Don't mind them. Economics and marketing related courses are one of the most sought after professionals in Lagos.

I am not talking about street marketers.

Most companies in Lagos prefer people with background in marketing and business related courses for their management and marketing operations.

Just make sure you pick up professional skills during your NYSC.

But if you want to apply as an Economist, you go look for job tire.

I will advise you learn advance digital marketing. Pick up all relevant certification from both Google, Facebook, Twitter, HubSpot and others.

Go to jobberman and you will see that Digital marketing jobs with background in Economics, business or marketing are the most advised vacancy.

if you goo as a DM, you will see money and run
