kandiikane:

Is the ijaws the same as the cross river state people? My aunt married last year(she is from cross river state) and her husband is Igbo but she wore what I am seeing here, the attire, including the hat in the second to last photo, beaded walking stick and heavy bead necklaces.

Cross River consist of Ibibio, Efik, Annang, Igbo, etc with Efik being the majority.  Traditional attires tend to be interchangeable among SE and SS region.  I saw hats I assumed was just an Igbo man dress style because its the type of hat worn exclusively among my community but I just learned otherwise.

Beads on the other hand is very common among Nigerian southern groups but the heavy neck beads is exclusive to River groups.  I'm not sure if the heavy bead is just an Ijaw dress style or an all rivers group dress style due to the fact I know a Rivers Igbo woman married to an Edo man and she was dressed in similar attire during her traditional wedding and another river igbo woman dressed the same way during her traditional wedding which Ijaw girl posted here.

Many Igbos in rivers state wear Ijaw trad attires or mix both igbo trad and rivers ijaw trad 2gether

Sorry guys I aint trying to hate but I was sold on these so called Ijaw attire!! Its simply too GROSS to my liking!! They might as well get a bucket,,paint it red and wear it on their head as Ijaw attire! These things can give a child nightmares!! Seriously, you guys need to modify your attire. The beads are too much and the regalia their men were wearing are too bogus and too shiny. And did I just see some dudes tying scarf on their head ?
And Chibuike Amaechi need to change his name to tekena perekuma or goodluck bekema cause he aint Igbo to me and I am awashed with shame that a grown ass man who bear Igbo names could dress like a masqurade in the name of attire!!! Nwa emee alu!! I am not at least impressed!!

Ole girl, hate who ? What will make me to hate on Ijaw ppl ?
When I peruse through these your pictures I get an idea of people who are trying so hard to create a culture that never existed and thats why you see them throwing anything onto their body just so they can look culturally savvy and not having the moderation to know when to cease!!
I mean to ask if these ppl are nuts?? You wear so much stuff on your body and dont know when you start looking feminine. . . The issue is not the material but how it was sew and how much is suppose to be worn.
MODIFICATION IS THE ANSWER!!!

the hat with feathers thingies and the modified agbadas are all recent inventions i think.

I prfer the female attire, seems more traditional.

Can someone tell me what the female hat signify? And if there's any significance on which  side the head the cap is placed?

Every tribe is culturally rich. Only an ignorant who has never traveled out of his horizon would think otherwise.
PS: I've yet to see ijaw_girl bash any tribe in this forum, but I've seen you do it multiple times.

So. . . .chill.

I do not hate Igbos as I have no reason to. But I extremely hate those who hate my ppl, my tribe, my culture and my identity.
People like you who wish to come on NL to spew lies and crap about Yorubas will be met with a deadly force like me.  Trust me, I enjoy retaliating to y'all's senseless insults. And you , sir, are one tribalist.

Amaechi's dressing is a common dressing in Rivers State and Abia State.Infact I have noticed a high similarity in dress style between Bonny,Opobo and Abia people from Abiriba down to Ngwa and Ndoki. I suspect they could be more related than we really know. That Akwette material is worn almost in the entire SE and SS of Nigeria.

you're very ignorant about your culture. the pictures you've been posting arent that traditional and truly do a disservice to your people and heritage. you're simply a vacuous person obsessed by glamour and outward appearances. you're spending your time highlighting "beautiful" gaudy and tasteless things as as opposed to true tradition and custom. all africans have them.

maki:

I am so proud of my kalabari-ijaw culture, d pipo that are hating because it's European influenced, yes it is u can go hang yourself, that's why our names are bob-Manuel, jack, Briggs, people green, whyte, yellow, green, blue jack, black duke, countless, and we love it that way, and for your info so many other tribes are getting influenced by the ijaw cultural attire now, don't lie,

yes i wish my name was jack briggs. i am jealous of your slave names. thats it genius. you figured us out. lol.

@one naira and odumchi,  there was a funeral in the family and the men were dressed exactly like the  picture above. . Is this just what is worn by most cross river people or just the ijaws?
