The Oba of Lagos came out openly to say that he is not Yoruba and that Lagos in not Yoruba! Openly! Oba of Lagos!! The custodian of Lagos history and tradition!!! Why is it that you and your type glossed over that statement and never challenged him as you continued as if Lagos is Yorubaland? And you do this while persistently wanking off on whatever an incoherent Wike said?? How is it that you are so excited that Wike the governor of Rivers said he is not igbo, but not excited that Amaechi, who handed over to him openly claimed to be Igbo? Two of them coming from the same ikwerre? What actually drives you lot crazy about the so-called quarrel between the Igbo and her minority neighbors??

Im telling you these people registered in nairaland because of Igbo, pure and simple. I didnt know there are these many Igbo haters in nairaland till this covid started. They are jobless. Covid lockdown caught agbero off street so they come here to hate. The bloody camel herders in arewanistan are the problem here.

I'm still waiting for Yorubas here to explain to all those reading why they support Wikes view about Rivers State but will Never support the view of the Oba of Lagos as it regards the ownership of Lagos! Wike said he's not igbo and all of you have been foaming in the mouth, although Amaechi his brother has a contrary view! The Oba of Lagos has been quoted to say he is not Yoruba and that Lagos is not Yoruba! My question is: why are these Yorubas still claiming Lagos and why are they not following their advice to the igbos as it regards the view on Lagos/Yorubas? Why all these threads to over labour Wikes outburst?

Lagos not part of Yorubaland – Oba Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has claimed that Lagos State is not part of Yoruba land.

Akiolu’s statement is coming barely a week after he publicly humiliated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at an event.

In a statement from Akiolu’s palace, the monarch traced the historical background of the state and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land.

The statement reads: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos.

"Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast.

“It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King.

"Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone.

“Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks."

There is difference between influence and ownership.

Even tho you’re an illiterate, you should at least know the difference between influence and ownership.

Ife had influence on Benin, does that implies the Yorubas owned Benin?

Benin had influence on Onitsha and even Zik spoke about it, does that mean Benin Own Onitsha?

Igala had influence on Anambra, does that mean Igala owned Anambra?

Stop being ignorant of basic things. Maybe you should give your phone to someone more intelligent then so we can continue this conversation!

The Oba never retracted his statement that Lagos is not Yoruba! Read your link! He only said that he doesn't mean that Benin owns Lagos! Dude traced the ancestry of the progenitors of Lagos to Benin! Same way Wike traced his family tree to wherever! So what's the big deal? Why all the noise?

This is NOT a Yoruba affairs.
Apart from few Yorubas that read about them on Nairaland, 99.8% of the Yoruba people don't even know anything called Ikwerre.

Grab a random Yoruba guy on the street of Ibadan, Ilesha, Shaki or Ile-Ife and ask him if Ikwerres are igbos.
His response will be; what is Ikwerre?

This thread is of no importance to me in the first place. The reason why I replied initially was because of the misinformation you used about Oba of Lagos claiming Benin owned Lagos.

I showed you the link in PremiumTimes where he said that was fake news. He only mentioned the fact that the influence of Benin cannot be taken away from Lagos, but he reiterated that he never said Benin own Lagos.

Understand the difference between ownership and influence.

Ife had a lot of influence on Benin, can we claim Yoruba own Benin because of that?

The below is Azikwe statement about Onitsha and Benin. Can we now claim Benin owned Onitsha?

Posted from Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe's Autobiography "My Odyssey" listed on Amazon UK for £7,009.00 or $11,461.00.

Excerpt:
“One day I asked her (grandmother) the meaning of the word ‘Onitsha’. She explained that it had historical significance. The terminology meant one who despised another. It is a contraction of two words, Onini to despise, and Ncha meaning others. So that the two words when joined together mean one who despises others. Then I asked her why we despised others. She patted me on the back and told me that it was due to our aristocratic background and tradition. I insisted that she should explain to me the basis of this supercilious social attitude. She told me that we despised others because we descended from the Royal House of Benin and so regarded ourselves as the superiors of other tribes who had no royal blood in their veins, “

“I continued to belabor my grandmother to tell me more of the history and origins of the Onitsha people. She narrated that many many years ago, there lived at Idu (Benin) a great Oba who had many children. Due to a power struggle regarding the right of precedence among princes of the blood and other altercations, there was a civil war in Benin. One day, the supporters of one of the princes insulted and assaulted Queen Asije, the mother of of the Oba of Benin, who was accused of having trespassed on their farmland. Enraged at this evidence of indiscipline and lawlessness, the Oba ordered his war chief and brother, Gbunwala Asije to apprehend and punish the insurgents.

In the attempt to penalise them, Chima, the ultimate founder of the Onitsha city-state, a prince of the blood in his own right, led the recalcitrants against his Uncle, Gbunwala. This intensified the civil war which rent the kingdom of Benin in two and led to the founding of Onitsha Ado N’Idu, , ” “As the great trek from Benin progressed, some did not have the stout heart of the pioneer-warrior, and decided to settle at different places, known today as Onitsha -Ugbo, Onitsha-Olona, Onitsha-Mili, Obior, Issele Ukwu, Ossomari, Aboh, etc,

One thing about you guys is that you think the minorities doesn’t have a mind of their own and therefore they are zombies that can’t come online to show their grievances.

Wike is not a Yoruba, he is the governor of a whole state and he denounced his Igboness publicly and have been dealing with Igbos for a while now.

Stop trying so hard to link the Yorubas to this. People normally will comment on topics on Nairaland, just like Ibos will comment on other Yoruba threads so I see no reason why you’re here disturbing yourself about what the Yorubas think about this.

You should rather use this time to engage the minorities on the street of River state and tell them they must accept the Igbo tag by force.

Trust me I’m not insulting you.

I simply called you an illiterate based on the fact that you can’t differentiate Influence from Ownership.

For example, USA had influence on a lot of countries but does that mean USA owned those countries?

No tribe is an island, people have one time or another had influence on each other whether in the North, East, West, or South.

What are you blabbing about? Did I tell you Zik is not from Benin or from Tanganyika? He can come from wherever, that's his kettle of fish.. what I'm saying is that the Oba of Lagos traced his ancestry to Benin, just like Wike and as you pointed out, Zik! So why is Wikes view being used by your type to demonize igbos and make it look like they are trying to steal Portharcout by "attaching by force" as you guys prefer to put it?? Especially when another ikwerre man has given a contrary view? If igbos should not claim Rivers because of Wikes outburst? Can we extend that idea to Yorubas as it relates to Lagos because of the view of the Oba of Lagos
