Many people see NYSC as an opportunity to save money for the challenges ahead. I believe this isn't the best mindset to carry into NYSC.

I advise you to see NYSC as a great opportunity to learn, gather experience and make connections if you truly have a plan for your life.

You can 'work' yourself into a public school for your primary assignment (PPA), work for two or three days a week and use your free time to learn skills like graphic design, programming, data science, fashion designing, project management etc.

You also get to meet bright minds from other schools. They may be poor today but only God knows what tomorrow holds. Besides that, you get to share ideas that can open your mind to opportunities and trigger your innovation and creativity. So, NYSC is a great avenue for healthy and useful socialization.

Finally, the allawee is enough to live a reasonable life (at least for your one year service). You can offer to work for free in a private company. In the real sense it isn't free because you're gathering experience and building a portfolio. For example, you may offer to work in a private university in exchange for no monthly stipends. At least after your NYSC, you can boast in your CV that you have lecturing experience.

Finally, if you love yourself and have plans for your future, please avoid private secondary schools. Don't be enticed with their 5,000-10,000 monthly stipend.

Firstly, that 10k will not improve your welfare reasonably. Also, there's little or no useful experience to acquire in a private secondary school. Finally, they'll consume every calorie in your body and second of your time. You won't have time for any personal development.

I wish I had someone to tell me this during my service year. I hope this will help someone.

In conclusion.
Please don't see NYSC as a money-making scheme. The 400k per year can't take you anywhere. However, it can help you think worry less about hunger and focus on self-development for a year.
...and year is enough to learn whatever you want to learn.

I hope this helps someone.

Excellent piece.

I learned about GMATS, Toefl, GRE from fellow corp members i met during NYSC, I acquired the books with my allowee and practiced which helped me pass all the numerous aptitude tests that I took after service leading me to chose which postgraduate scholarship and which jobs to choose due to multiple offers.

I also saved during service which I used to start a business with immediately I left service which helped me in hustles for job/scholarship tests, interviews etc

I built relationships that are still helping me till today.

I touched lives so much during that year too so much so that I was offered 2 jobs to stay back.

NYSC is only as valuable as how you make it, but I am forever grateful to have served.

Great advice. I hope others learn from this. Current corpers now earn way more than we did. They should use the extra money wisely

Lie now that you dont miss it.

As a doctor, I can tell you 100% I didn't miss it a bit.
I was practicing and earning 3 times what my friends were earning while serving.

I wanted it earlier because of some links to a possible international NGO but seeing what my friends went through, I thank God I didn't serve

You're wrong, if you have passion for teaching, you ll embrace private/public schools.

In my days, I taught in two schools apart from private teaching. Till date, these kids still have my contacts cos of the seeds sown in them

I hope the seeds have germinated into banknotes.

Bro Biko, where did u serve and PPA? Your state of service is a major factor in having savings. Come to East(Imo state in particular), where u receive no state alawee, no ppa stipend, no stipend from home, several calls from home then u would understand the difference in service.
Why would u be doing nysc and be getting calls from home na oil company u dae?

That 100k was without state alawee

I served in a private school then , they were paying me 10k but the payment is always late .
I was the only korpa serving in the then school , they were using me cause I was teaching from nursery 3 to the last class.
I complained to zonal and local government inspector but they wouldn't do anything , I drastically change totally to something I could not recognize whenever I looked at myself in the mirror.
One morning I just woke up and decided to take actions .
I stopped going to my PPA for close to a month, my mumu principal reported to me to state coordinator she summed me and I explained everything to her , she was very angry at the principal that she odered I be reposted to a public school close to my house .
At least I got to see other corps members and was able to speak about NYSC experience unlike my formal PPA where I had no clue.
They automatically turned me to a teacher overnight. I was presented as a teacher in the school head quarter but I was been paid a peanut .
Private schools the worst place to serve !

Not really.

Knowledge is now liberalised, irrespective of where you are.

You can acquire these skills in the remotest enclave of the world. Thanks to tech tools - phone, computer and internet.

It's about the willingness.

The future is in everyone's hand.

while I commend the op write up, stop sounding like a motivational speaker.

you have no idea how it is to be posted to a remote area where you hustle for ordinary water to bath and half the time, there is no electricity to charge your phone.

na for Niger Delta boys village you go dey carry system go dey charge?

if you stay in a city where you can actually enhance those skills, fine. otherwise, this is wishful thinking.

As result of NYSC , I got the connection to work with a Governor. I am still working with that Governor. Mind you, I am from Middle Belt but the Governor is from South South.

Many narrative has it that NYSC is a waste of time but not in my own case . Thanks to whosoever that initiated that Scheme

No one cares to know the nature of what brings in money at d end of d month especially siblings when they know 33k alert comes into your fone monthly. Im sure u served at North. My brother was able to save more than 100k as at 2015 as well. My point still remains that u can't compare the cost of survival at the North and South West with south east and South south. A friend of mine who served at zamfara bodly save 20k each month but d day he came visiting at my place, he was like, guy this how this place is? He had to ran back to his base.
