You are extremely right. I'd been in the game even before CSS3 was widely adopted... when flexbox and the grid system were not the order of the day.

Floats and clears, overflows and clearfixes were used to create and hack layouts those crazy days; at least in my opinion its a bit easier now.

JavaScript is where you begin to really sweat your pants out but again, EcmaScript 6 has made JavaScript more readable and free-flowing unlike other Ecma prior versions.

Combined with the plethora of information that can be found these days, I think the barrier is more surmountable these days than before.

So the issue of desktop or mobile first is more of your customer market. if you are targeting mostly non-technical people, then mobile-first. If you market is mainly for the tech-savvy, then desktop-first.

I want to believe you're exaggerating your ordeal with CSS. But if you were to be serious about it, I think you're in the wrong profession.

CSS is difficult only when you compare it with HTML, other technologies you're gonna learn after CSS are way harder and complex. If you can't cope with CSS now, I don't know how you plan to cope with JavaScript, React, NodeJS.

If you're hell bent on learning this, I'd advise you to start learning CSS from beginning again like a beginner and start practising with it, you learn more by doing and not by reading in the programming world..

Try to build different shapes[pentagon, hexagon, rectangle, circle etc using CSS], practises like this make you more comfortable while using it. Spend more time working on things you feel you can't do as this increases your confidence and learning curve.

CSS is as easy as abcd. Learnt that shit when I'm new to nairaland. Thanks to people like dhtml, pythonian and many other gurus I met here in 2012.
Meanwhile CSS is not a programming language dude rather à html styler.
As an aspiring web dev, if you find CSS hard then web developing is not for you. Cus that's the element of it

I have a video download of one senior lecturer from one of the Universities in US. If you send me your email address, I will send the download to you. It is about 700MB. I think CSS is interesting. Is it complicated? I am not sure. But, I am sure CSS is very very interesting.

Beside this download that I have, there are several videos on Youtube, very very good videos that will teach you CSS.

The thing is, css is гетагded*, and nothing works as expected.
What's more, there are different browsers and different screen resolutions so good luck supporting all that mess.
Solution: leave that job for someone else and work on backend, using an actual programming language.

This has always been my solution to the css wahala.. Leave frontend and do backend. Now I'm using working with NodeJs + ExpressJS and currently using GraphQL.. No more flexbox or grid wahala for me again.. And backend is more interesting..

There is nothing in CSS. It is very simple and easy to learn just like HTML. It is just to structure and style the page. Just put your mind in it. Once you master it, that is all.

I'm also learning how to be a web developer. I will advise you to use a structured material when learning css or web development. I use Mozilla tutorials and it is very good and helpful. They explain in a good way.

You can use Mozilla tutorials, theodinproject or freecodecamp.

I must confess, CSS is hard & it's difficulty is underated.this is so for self taught persons. in fact it is harder to learn by self taught. many properties, and values are present to always remember. sometimes I stare at the computer and wonder whether I am Cut or for this.
